“Beautiful views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

Overlooks the lake...beautiful views! Clean, good location. We went to Cinque Terre and loved it!! 8 of us traveled three weeks in Italy and Cinque Terre was one of our highlights. Be sure to make reservations at Locanda Lorena, a wonderful restaurant on an island across from Portovenere. They pick you up in a boat near the hotel. Wonderful food and experience!!

We are used to staying at 4 & 5 star hotels and were aware there are none of those in Portovenere, but we wanted to try this location. Firstly, if I had to go back to Cinque Terre again, which I wouldn't, I would stay on Montessoro al Mare which seemed much nicer and tourist friendly. It seemed we were the only English speaking people there and the people at restaurants, shops don't care to try and help out. Upon arrival, we noticed the lobby wasn't air conditioned. We also had to ring a bell to get the front desk person out and it took them 5 minutes. We had to lug our own luggage upstairs. The rooms were Disgusting. Dirty looking floor, dirty bathroom, old outdated rooms. The bathrooms were extremely small. We also had a horrible stench to our room, like a dead mouse. We had a room with a balcony, but you can't tell from photos that there is a gas station and a street underneath you. It is not directly sea front. We couldn't wait to check out! The breakfast was just OK. The only pro's to this hotel were the views and the one young lady who worked the breakfast who was very friendly.

We had requested a room with water views and this we received. The view was great. The hotel was almost empty as the season hadn't started. The room wasn't as small which is the case in many hotels. However, the bathroom was small and there was nowhere to put toiletries. Parking was a problem but we paid Euro 24 for two days. You have to go about 50 metres up the road to their sister hotel - Hotel Paradiso - for dinner. This is not a problem and the food and service was faultless. Continental breakfast at the Belvedere was very good with a good selection.
We would stay there again and Portovenere is very beautiful.

Room Tip: If you go in their summer season you would be advised to organise parking in advance. The population...

We were aware not to expect 5 star accommodation in this area so we kept an open mind and walked right in........nice reception for a family run hotel......lovely views...got our sea view room although we didn't have one booked......small room..but that was okay...great view over the harbor......slight smell from bathroom that wasn't great..but not a deal breaker....breakfast was pretty good....and staff was very helpful in getting us where we needed to go.....so for us it was closer to a 4 than a 3.5.....

We were spoiled at our previous b&b in Tuscany. We arrived at the front desk of the Hotel Belvedere and received a mediocre greeting only to climb the stairs with our luggage to a tiled floor hotel room. Little did I know what lurked behind the bathroom door - a room the size of an airplane bath. I literally could not raise my arms to shampoo my hair. The "vanity" was pretty much identical to those on an airplane. It was July and hot, both outside and inside our hotel room. The AC was going full blast, but not cooling our room. The lobby, hallway, lounge, and "restaurant" weren't air conditioned either. The breakfast buffet was poor, stale coffee cake and a meat platter. We had to pay to park on the street down below the hotel, which is located on a one way street at the top of a hill. It wasn't easy finding parking here. Once you get a spot - don't move your car or you may be circling the one ways trying to find a parking place near the hotel. Any hotel in Portovenere is close to the beach, restaurants, etc. We were really disappointed in this hotel. It was expensive, hot in the summer, and anything but luxurious.

The hotel itself isn't luxurious, but it's in a perfect location to experience all Portovenere has to offer! Parking is the only downfall of this hotel - you have to find your own, which can prove difficult in the summer months. If you need to check out early in the morning, make sure and arrange that ahead of time as the staff does not stay overnight and may not arrive until 7 am the next morning. Internet is available in room for a fee. I would certainly stay here again if my travels brought me through Portovenere! Staff spoke English as well.

Small, friendly hotel with helpful staff. Rooms are small, but very clean and comfortable. Pretty view of the harbour. Good breakfast included - buffet with fresh fruits, yogurts, bread, warm croissants, cereals, cheeses - and eggs anyway you like them. Great lounge and terrace for evening drinks and gathering with friends.
The sister hotel next door has a fantastic restaurant. We had a great dinner there on the terrace overlooking the harbour.
Portovenere is a perfect town for exploring the Cinque Terre. The ferry departs every hour all day to all the villages.
We found that 3 full days was plenty of time. Our first day, we took the first ferry right up to Monterosso. It was a beautiful trip up the coast and we could view all the villages. From Monterosso, we hiked the trail back to Corniglia, stopping in Vernazza for lunch. We then took the train (as the trail was closed) to Romiggiare and then boarded the ferry back to Portovenere. Our second day, we toured Portovenere in the morning and rented a boat in the afternoon. It's beautiful to anchor out by the islands and dip in for a swim. Our last day, we took the ferry to Romiggiare and hiked one of the other trails (3a and 3b). Fabulous views and no tourists on the trails.
You don't need a car while you are here. We took the express train from Genoa to Le Spezia. You can taxi or arrange a shuttle with the hotel to Portovenere for about 30 euros. Or you can take a bus. It's about a 25 minute ride.
I would recommend this hotel and village to anyone visiting the Cinque Terre region.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the harbour.
