It just doesn't get any better than this outrageously expensive villa. The food is divine, atmosphere unbelievable, grounds lovely and staff the finest.
Great place to hideaway or just indulge... Life is short -- and this beautiful place should be on your bucket list. *****'s

Dear Lady,

thank you very much for your kind review and the idea to share your experience at Il Pellicano with all the TripAdvisor Travellers.
Brief, focused on the main moments you enjoyed with us. A perfect description of the Pellicano's Experience.
You are right, life is short and we have to taste each single moment the Nature offer us daily.
Why not with the amazing food, wine and spectacular show offered by the wild nature of the Argentario Peninsula?
Good Idea!
We wait for you once again, I really hope to have the chance to have a glass of Brunello with you on the terrace.

All my best

Stayed for two nights in September. Great hotel, service was perfect. The rooms are located in the midst of the hill, we had a very quiet room on top of one building, giving free views of the mediteranean. The restaurant is spectacular - given my shellfish allergy, they did everything to provide still a top expereince and they succeeded. A place to definitely come back!

Dear Mister Michael,

thank you very much for the kind review you shared with the TripAdvisor Readers. I really appreciated your description and your judgement about the property.
I'm really proud about your evidence on the Restaurant Staff and the attention they paid to you. This is exactly our daily life. The attention on the small particulars which usually make the differents.
I hope to have a future opportunity to welcome you back.

Beautiful resort located on a cliff overlooking the sea. We spent two wonderful days relaxing by the pool, enjoying the excellent, though expensive food. Located approx. 1 1/2 hrs. northwest of Rome, it is the perfect place to rest between Rome and Florence. The spa was excellent. Wonderful staff. Very special place.

Dear Guest,

many thanks for your kind review and the idea to share with the TripAdvisor readers your experience with us.
At this point of the winter, preparing the new season, the Staff and me we really appreciate your memory after long time. It's the perfect energy to start a new unique adventure in the Summer 2013.
You have resumed in few words the idea of Il Pellicano. A magic place along the Tuscany coast, in the amazing Italy.
Once again thank you very much, I really hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back with us.
I wish you all the best

Driving the Tuscan coast we pass the Parco Ucellina, a vast coastal park with miles of sand duney beaches, backed by deep umbrella pine forests providing cool shade from the intense summer sun. But it is the first week in October and summer is still here. As we cross the isthmus to the mountainous Argentario where like Napoleon, we could take a ferry to the island of Elba. Instead we head for Porto Ercole, a very crowded oval yacht harbor with floating marina ahchorages protected by a breakwater, and a huge Spanish fort which looms on a promontory above the town. A little further on we drive over a ridge and along a high road with a very distracting panoramic view of the deep blue Tyrhennian Sea. Sometimes getting there is half the adventure.
Soon Il Pellicano appears tumbling down a rocky cliff to the sparling water's edge, all cascading terraces dripping with bougainvilla, rosemary, lavendar and plumbago. The airy sun-filled rooms and baths are elegant and comfortable, decorated in subtle shades of whites and tans, with intermittent splashes of tropical colors. Reminiscent of the sophisticated resort hotels of the Costa Smeralda (Sardinia), inventive fresh fish dinners on the terrace with its many bird cages, has a dreamlike quality at the end of the day. The details are well thought out, remote without isolation, a speed boat will take you to a strand-side dinner of pasta with a vibrant lemon garlic sauce is remarkable in its simplicity.
While there we drove up into the hills dotted with flocks of sheep to visit the Etruscan villages of Saturnia, Sovana, Sorano and intriguing Pittigliano which perches on a bluff like a 'drip castle' in the sky.
Everyone should be so lucky to while away a few days in the pampered luxury of Il Pellicano.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms have an ocean view ... a suite or a guest house removed from the main building...

Overpriced!
The michelin star restaurant serves good food but definately not worthy of the price tag attached. I should know as I'm a restaurant critic. This continues into the poolside bar - a plate of chips by the poolside is about 20 euro. Madness.
I actually asked to speak to the manager (to resolve a minor issue), but after asking at reception three times no-one ever made contact with us. Not good service.
The pool area is crammed so you struggle to get a seat...as people will stay there all day or put their belongings there to reserve their spot. Then when we went down to the small sea front, the hotel were building a jetty into the sea - its hard to relax wih banging and clanging next to you. Final issue, our room balconly was right by the airconditioning outstide unit which you could hear all day and night.
In conclusion, you get the impression this is a place to be seen at... the hotel is lovely but definately not worth the price!!!! Trust me. There are much nicer places to stay at for much less.

We stayed here for 3 nights on our honeymoon. This boutique hotel is less than a 2 hour drive from Rome. First, the good part...the hotel is nestled in the mountains and provides an intimate, luxurious, romantic getaway experience. We spent our days lounging by the salt water pool or down by the ocean. The bright sun and gentle ocean breeze were heavenly. Our evenings were spent dining al fresco at one of the two restaurants on site (one of which is a Michelin star) and enjoying the lovely live piano music. The service at the restaurants was excellent. Our room was sizable and comfortable. We truly felt relaxed and rejuvenated at the end of our stay.

Now, the bad part...when we checked out and our rental car was brought to the entrance, we noticed a sizable dent on the trunk. We had inspected the car while at the Rome airport and knew the dent was not there when we turned over the keys to the hotel parking attendant. The hotel staff at first apologized and then, after conversing amongst themselves, denied any responsibility. They suggested we had caused the damage on our drive to the hotel. This was incredibly disappointing after a) such a wonderful stay; b) after spending thousands of dollars per night staying here. You should also know that the restaurants are quite expensive (even a sandwich poolside is 20-25 euros and bottled water 5 euros), but you don't have any other options since it's the price you pay for the seclusion.

We would recommend this hotel because of its unique features, but would probably photograph the exterior of our rental car if we returned.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The elegant five-star hotel, located in Tuscany's Maremma region, was built in the mid-1960s as a love nest for Michael and Patricia Graham and it is today part of The Leading Hotels of the World. The home, called Il Pellicano as a tribute to the first time the couple met at Pelican Point in California, was initially a club for the Grahams' friends, but was subsequently expanded and opened to friends of friends. However, a few things remained the same: the pleasure of feeling at home and the glamorous and slightly retro atmosphere. The hotel's discrete luxury and the still-rugged Tuscan countryside attract the international jet set. Today, the cottages and the central building are suspended between the sky and the sea, with large rooms, windows and terraces where it's unclear where the indoors end and the outdoors begin. There are pathways and stairways, fragrant gardens and discrete corners, a restaurant with two Michelin stars and three Gambero Rosso forks, a heated sea-water swimming pool, a spa with a sea view to soothe both the body and the soul, and for those wanting to take a dip in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a white platform with chaise longue and immaculate parasols. ... more   less
