“Casa del Sole - No going back... Yep!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2007

This accommodation is actually based in Pescia, not Pistoia as per a previous review. We stayed in “The Lodge” and although we knew that the place was going to be basic, we didn't realise that it was going to be THIS basic!

The farm is located up a windy “hairpin” bend road, and then after that is the hair-raising slope down to the place where you leave your car. From here it is a 10 minute walk up a steep rough track to the farm itself. If the owner is around they have a motorised cart to carry your luggage to the top which is invaluable.

The farm itself is rather messy and untidy, still looks like a building site from when they renovated 5 years ago. This hap dash-ness also applies to the accommodation though, and although the lodge was clean, it also had a few unwelcome visitors, like ants in the shower tray, a huge slug and a snail over the course of the week.

The kitchen area had most of the basics, but obvious things like washing up liquid, a washing up brush/cloth, salt and even olive oil to cook with were missing, which considering they produce their own oil for sale on eBay was a bit off. We even had to take out own rubbish down to the bins at the bottom of the road (about 2 miles away).

The bed (which was an Ikea double bed bunk bed) was comfortable and with good pillows, but other details like blinds being too small for the windows or broken could have been easily rectified and contributed to the overall feeling of cheapness and lack of attention to detail. The bathroom was clean but you had to plan your showers for 20 min intervals to wait for the hot water to heat up.

This self catering accommodation is based on a working farm. The farm can sometimes be noisy and there are a few friendly animals around such as the dogs, cats, chickens, etc. All of which often roam freely around the grounds. This also goes for the owners three small children who would often have play sword fights on our decking when we were trying to relax!

  • Liked — The view and bird song
  • Disliked — awkward location, and not very private, not easy to relax

When we go on holiday, we like to support local businesses, which this was. It is advertised as a working farm producing olive related products. We had watched the 'No going back' show in the UK, and as we'd wanted to go to Italy we decided to stay in their advertised accommodation. We appreciated the fact that the place was rural, but when taking money from customers, you would expect the accommodation to be of a minimum standard of facilities and cleanliness.

We rented The Lodge. This is described as a charming little house. Whereas it's a run down shed. We slept on a large bunkbed which wasn't that stable, the blinds on the windows were thick with mould. The shower door was hanging off its hinges. There we dead insects dotted around and numerous dead ants. The place clearly hadn't been cleaned before we arrived. The explaination from the discourteous owner, was that we were in the country and this was normal. He then proceeded to give the place a light clean and removed the blinds, so that he could powerwash them! I think they dissintergrated in the process, we never received any blinds back.

The grounds are generally unkempt, the pool was nothing to speak of.

All in all I would only recommend this if you like the outdoors indoors with an extremely steep climb from where you can park your car to the accommodation.

They even have the cheek to ask us to adopt an olive tree at a cost of £50 per year with a potential yield of 2L of oil. I'd stick to the supermarket if I were you.
