Torre di Catilina is located a few kilometres north of Pistoia on the road to Bologna, uphill. From the swimming pool area you have lovely views over a side valley. Easy to find, although the roadsign is a bit small.
I had a studio apartment, which was spacious and equipped with a kitchen, refrigerator, bathroom with shower, small tv and an airconditioning unit, although unfortunately the air flow was directed at the bed so if you turned it on at night you woke up with a stiff neck. Another small disadvantage was the bed, which was a foldout couch which was turned into a double bed, slightly leaning towards the middle.
The swimming pool is beautiful and there are plenty of sunbeds and parasols available.
In the immediate surrounding area there are no shops or restaurants to be found, so you need to go either a few kilometres uphill (nice restaurant in La Cugna) or downhill (big supermarkets in Pistoia). The road downhill brings you directly to the ring road of Pistoia, which has a very good and quick connection to the Pisa/Florence motorway. From the apartments you can be on the motorway within 5 to 10 minutes, which is very convenient because it's no fun to drive through the city of Pistoia.
With this connection you can be in Lucca in 30 minutes, Pisa in 45 minutes and Florence in 30 minutes (depending on traffic). I also tried if I could park my car at the train station in Pistoia and take the train to Florence, but there's no cheap parking lot there so you might as well drive on and find a parking garage in Florence (I parked at the Piazza Beccaria for EUR 1.50 per hour).
The owner of Torre di Catilina is a Mel Brooks lookalike, a nice and funny guy who speaks Italian and French, however no English (only a few words). There's a very pleasant atmosphere, it's small scale and very nice for families. Plenty parking space.
I can well recommend Torre di Catilina for people who want a comfortable and quiet accommodation within reach of the big tourist attractions of Northern Tuscany.
