“Excellent base to explore Tuscany”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

We stayed 4 nights in the summer of 2010 at the Villa De Fiori in Pistoia to explore the Tuscany region.

Excellent location, in the town of Pistoia, located almost halfway between Pisa and Florence. We rented a car at Pisa, drove to Pistoia and stayed here. Florence is an hour+ train-ride away, Sienna and the beaches of Cinque Terre just 1-day car-drives.

The villa itself is located amid the vineyards of the town. Getting there is somewhat difficult, with the roads and directions being somewhat confusing for the first-timer. Not much english spoken in the town, so make sure you get good directions when making reservations.

Our 'cottage' had a dining area with a cooking-range and utensils, bedroom and bathroom - all very clean and sufficiently spacious by European standards. A very well maintained and decent sized swimming pool in the midst of a pretty garden, was the main attraction for our 2 girls. Daily breakfast was usually fresh bread, with made-to-order (boiled/omlette/.. ) farm eggs, pastries and coffee; with fresh milk for the kids. The in-house restaurant is reputed to be one of the better restaurants in the town, and it certainly proved so. We had dinner there twice, and both times the food and house wine were superb. Other nights, we cooked inside, with local purchases.

The only hassle might be the lack of any shops nearby, so for any purchases (including groceries), you'll need some mode of transportation. We had a car, so this wasn't an issue.

All in all, an excellent base camp to explore Tuscany.

“The hotel was nice but don't chose half board!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2011

We stayed at Villa de Fiori for 3 nights in a family room. The hotel was nice - a bit like going back in time 50 years - but they did have internet access and a small television in the room. There was a lovely swimming pool. The thing that ruined our stay was the food. When booking by email, I was asked if we would like half board at 23 euros per person. I told them my husband was a vegetarian (eating fish and chicken) - but was assured that this would not be a problem. On the first night we were not offered a choice until we said that my younger son did not like risotto - he then had simple spaghetti (aglio, olio and peperoncino). My boys were still hungry at the end of the meal - so we had to order more food for them - for which we were charged extra. The third night was the worst - again we were not offered a choice and when my husband said he did not eat pork, he was offered an omelette and then the waiter told us that we were very difficult! My husband then complained to the owner - who was nice but did not seem to grasp just how upset we were by this unpleasant attitude towards us. The restaurant offers an a la carte menu but if you are on half board you are made to feel like a second class guest and you are not offered a written menu. Breakfast was completely different - it was served in the kitchen and there was a wide choice.

“Beautifully located villa set in wonderful scenary with super access to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and The Tuscan Riviera.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2010

Stayed here for two weeks with two very small children. The Villa we rented was essentially a three storey town house adjacent to the hotel itself. The surrounding scenery is typically Tuscan, that is to say stunning and breath taking! The beautiful outside swimming pool was cold but once you were used to this, the views made for an incredibly relaxing experience. They have a small bar next to the pool where drinks are served as you lounge in the sun. It really does not get any better than this when one considers how over crowed, noisy and claustrophobic some hotels can get. This is a real exclusive find.

The villa we had was very simply furnished (maybe old-fashioned) with a television that was small, old and with terrible reception. Now normally this should not matter, but when you have two young children to entertain, it does! The kitchen was fine with plenty of old but working pots, pans and crockery.

The restaurant within the hotel is not cheap, BUT it is very fine in terms of quality and innovation. They put on an open barbeque evening with live entertainment one day, which whilst expensive (they charged for both my children who slept through 90% of it!) was an example of the service that only a small family run business can provide.
(Tip - there is a family friendly trattoria just 100 yards up the lane from the Villa which
serves excellent food at good prices)

They installed a very small play area for young children while we were there which became most useful for us!

My only gripe, when the restaurant emptied at night (12 - 1am), the well fed and watered visitors woud often awake us as they left. The car park is situated right outside the villa!

Certainly not a cheap holiday, but the quality of the location, the service and the overall ambience made it just about worthwhile. If they updated their decor and furniture i think it could be considered could value for money, but not until then.

If i stayed again i would stay in the hotel itself.

Hope this helps.

“Perfect place for a relaxing retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2010

We absolutely loved our recent 3 night stay at Villa de Fiori. We were welcomed by Gabriele, who gave us a tour of the property and some useful information on the surrounding area. The apartment was spacious, with a fully equipped kitchen and a large bedroom, and the outside areas are beautiful with a large pool overlooking local vineyards and a small playground for kids. There is also an onsight restaurant serving up some great food and wine (and some award winning Italian microbrewery beers that were highly recommended by the friendly staff) which is handy when you want to enjoy a few drinks and not have to worry about driving. There is also free wireless internet.

The property is well placed for short trips to Florence, Pisa and Lucca and makes a great base for exploring the surrounding areas (the northern Chianti towns are also just over an hour away)......and the villa is a great place to return to in the afternoon for a relaxing drink by the pool (once its warm enough)!!!!
