Owner description: Founded by Greek colonists, the ancient city of Poseidonia dates from 600 B.C. It was abandoned for centuries, but the remarkably well-preserved Greek temples were excavated in the mid-18th century.

“Awesome surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

I knew there were Greek ruins here but I was not prepared for the extent and beauty. We walked all through the site, and explored every place on the map. If you are in this area, do NOT miss this opportunity to see this site.

“best greek temples of italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

The archeological site is very well preserved and in great conditions. No crowds and all the time you need to fall in love with the three ancient doric temples and the ruins of the city surrounding them. To get there is a bit difficult by public transport but it's worth the effort.
take some sandwiches, sit down and breathe; you will feel the world is beautyfull

“Breath taking and elegant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

These temples are a must for any serious visitor to the region. Their longevity with no protection from earthquakes or the wiles of thieves makes them even more remarkable. Their original intention was to inspire awe in visitors and they certainly succeed in doing so today. For tourists staying in Naples or Sorrento, this is an easy journey on the national train service. Not well docemented, it is low cost, clean and easy to use. Get information form main stations, even those non fluent in Italian can interpret the timetables on the walls. From Pompeii to Paestum was €10.40 return, per person ( Oct 2013). The site has a good restaurant and great museum. We shared a pre organised guide with another couple for €35 each and she was fantastic for every minute of the 2 hours.

“Saved by maleria mosquitoes.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

Saved by the swamps and malaria mosquitoes, this site is one of the best preserved Greek ruins with three magnificent temples, and outlines of an entire city. The adjacent museum contains many excellent artifacts but charges a small entrance fee. The site is within easy walking distance from the train station, but be sure to purchase a round trip ticket before leaving Naples or Salerno since tickets are not sold at the station. Typical souvenir shops and restaurants are located across the road from the site.
