“The perfect getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

We stayed at La Rocca Orvieto a couple of nights and it was the most relaxing and romantic place one can imagine. Its located up on the hills between the Italian vineyards and you really feel remote and away from all the stress in the city. The room was nice, modern and clean. Food was excellent. Staff supernice. Breakfast to die for! An extrodinary view and a great swimmingpool. I would love to go back and recommend it highly.

GREAT Place - One Major Caveat

We spent a great five days at Rocca de Orvieto.  We would highly recommend this place UNLESS you rely upon good wifi access - see below.

The hotel is located on a hill overlooking the town of Orvieto, which provides beautiful vistas of the surrounding areas.  We stayed in an apartment in the 'Olive Oil' villa, which probably has the best views of all.  The apartments in this particular villa are practically brand new and very, very nice.  The beds were great.  We saw another building with apartments on the way to our villa which did not look as nice and didn't have any views.  Be sure to request the new building if you book here.  Driving into Orvieto took about 15 minutes.

The resort features two pools.  One is located by the main building (where the hotel rooms are located) and has a function hall and bar next to it.  We never saw anyone actually working the bar, so I can't comment on that.  There is another newer, larger pool up the hill by the apartments which is actually a nicer pool with a beautiful view of the valley.

The hotel provides free mountain bikes to guests, free laundry machines, wood barbecues, and free breakfast, which was decent.  They are also their own vineyard and make their own wines, which were surprisingly difficult to sample/purchase on-site.  We were told we could taste them at the pool bar, but again, never saw anyone working there.  But we didn't mind this so much.

Now to the big caveat.

Our only complaint was that if you stay in one of the apartments, which are located in a separate area farther up the hill, the wifi does not work most of the time.  Our internet only worked for one out of the five days we stayed here.  Whenever it wasn't working, we had to walk about five minutes down the hill to the other part of the complex with our computer and find a place to sit and use the Internet.  This was difficult later at night, as the reception area closes up and the other public areas are either the restaurant, which is awkward to sit at and do work while other guests are trying to enjoy a nice dinner, or outdoors by the pool, which is invariably either rainy or full of mosquitos at night.  We mentioned the wifi issues several times to the reception, who acknowledged the issue and said they'd look into it. To their credit, the two ladies at reception were very friendly and understanding, but seemed only somewhat interested in getting to the bottom of the issue. At one point, a technician came by to fix the wifi.  It stopped working again about an hour later.  We do need good wifi access for work, which is always a consideration when we book a hotel.  As much as we would like to, we unfortunately do not have jobs that allow us to simply drop off the grid for several days at a time.  It seems that this was not as important for most of the other guests, of which I am truly envious.  However, we booked our hotel in part based on the promise of wifi access.  Hopefully, this hotel will take measures to fix this issue for guests staying up the hill, or include a disclaimer on their booking site that wifi in the more remote rooms is unreliable at best, so that people who need do get work done during their holiday will not rely on it.

In summary, if you don't rely on a good wifi connection, we would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly.  Our five star rating ignores the wifi issue, as we thought everything else about this place was wonderful, and want to give them the benefit of the doubt in the wifi department.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer building.

Location! Location! Location! We were so lucky to have found this ideal hotel/resort. La Rocca is located in the hills of Orvieto and within an expansive vineyard. Since we rented a car, getting to and from the hotel was not a problem; otherwise you will need to get a taxi (but worth it). The views from anywhere in this resort were breathtaking! We stayed in the Vigneto Villa which consisted of two bedrooms (with memory foam mattresses/pillows), two bathrooms (had a slight problem with one of the shower doors), kitchen, dining room, and living room. The view from our private patio overlooked the pool and the vineyards. There was a pathway (about a 10 minute leisurely stroll) from the villas to the hotel/restaurant area. At night the pathway was aglow with shimmering fireflies – what a magical sight! Within the villa section of the resort, there is access to two washing machines but no dryer. When in Italy, do as the Italians do: hang up your wash to dry. The resort provides clothes racks to do this, and it was quite a pleasant experience. If you need to iron, the hotel staff will gladly set up the ironing board and iron for you in one of their work rooms. La Rocca’s breakfast was also scrumptious: fresh croissants, breads, pastries, and eggs to cook to your liking. It also included a variety of breads, fresh meats, cheeses, juices, and preserves. We ate dinner at their restaurant a couple of nights, and the food was delicious. We even had an opportunity to observe an Italian wedding which was taking place at the hotel. The wifi didn’t work well in our villa, but we didn’t go to Italy to worry about wifi! However, the closer you are to the hotel area, the better the wifi reception. We definitely plan on returning to this quiet and peaceful resort, and have already recommended it to family members and friends!

Everything was lovely, the room, the staff and the food. It is a bit of a distance from the town so you must take a taxi or rent a car. Perfect for us as we were looking for some quiet after Rome and Venice. I would highly recommend this place.
Thank you!

This wonderful hotel is set in a vineyard/olive farm with an unbelievable view. They make delicious wine and olive oil but also provide a breathtaking setting for weary travelers to relax. We stayed here for 2 nights before proceeding on to hot and busy Rome. I can't say enough about the beauty and comfort. A delicious restaurant and 2 pools with views to die for. It's a short hop to the village of Orvieto set on cliffs overlooking the valley and a short train ride to Rome if you can make yourself leave.

My wife and I stayed here for a few days during our trip to Italy. We had a room with a view of Tuscany that is absolutely unforgettable. The small kitchen was well equipped for making dinner from products that we purchased in Orvieto. The bathroom was beautiful; very large and super clean. The breakfast in the morning was great. A bit of a step above what you would find at a similarly priced B&B in Italy. I will admit that I am a coffee snob, but the espresso that they serve at this location is by far the best that I have had in my life. (roasted beans are from a small company in Sienna) I had at least two cappuccinos each morning..,with a few extra shots on the side.
We had a few issues finding this location at first, but I would say that our issues were mainly due to my TomTom GPS. Also the wifi in our unit was spotty at best, but we ran into that issue at every location in Italy.
I highly recommend this place :).
