“Going downunder”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Interesting tour of the underground caves built by the Etruscans, used as workshops, olive oil pressing and pigeon farming. It lasts about 45 minutes costing six euro and is worth a visit.

“fascinating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

Amazing how cultures build one on top of the other. I highly recommend this fascinating tour of the hill town built on "tufo" makes you look at pigeons in a whole different way. Well worth it!!!

“A Must See if Visiting Orvieto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

The caves were all dug by hand, and the stones were used to build the city. Nearly every building in Orvieto has it's own cave. The tour shows some excellent examples of what the caves were once used for, and the guide explains much about the history of the area. Different language tours are given at different times, Italian, English, & German.

“Unbelievable Caves!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

This was not on our radar at all but we were so glad we signed up for this "hike". We had an english speaking guide who took us out of the city and down a bit of a hill to enter the first cave. These caves were used, by families in the city, to store food, animals, etc. It is amazing to see what they built. The caves were accesses from stairways in their houses. Later days they were used for shelter from potential bombings during WWII and also for raising pigeons and well as storing wine, etc. Some of the caves were rather hard to reach by very steep, narrow stairs. Not for the folks uneasy about things like that.

“Very Cool!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

We spent a couple days in Orvieto last year. Loved it but did not tour the caves. This year, though, we were able to take the tour. Wow, sheds a whole different light on the town. So interesting! Great for photogs too! I can imagine a Tolkien movie being shot down here.
