Owner description: Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

“Stunningly beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

If you only look at the facade of the Duomo the visit to Orvieto will be worthwhile. The stunning reliefs that run across from just over shoulder height and higher tell their stories brilliantlyand doing full justice to them is worth the effort. Everywhere there is colourand variety

“Piece of Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

We visited this little town in July 2012. What a little gem and only an hour out of Rome. When you arrive on the train you just see the hill and once you get in the funicular and get to the top its like a little piece of heaven. Take a bus into town and there you come across this absolute master piece of art work. Who could have thought that anyone could build something like this. Go there at different times of the day and the building looks different. My best was the earlier afternoon as the sun was setting it shines brightly onto the Gold Fresco's at the the top of the Duomo. If you are lucky and can understand a little Italian there is an old gentleman who sits in front of the shops across the quad, he will tell you the whole history of the Duomo and the fresco's and statues that you see in front of you. If you stand in front of the Duomo on the left side in the corner is a gelato shop, so get some go back across the road grab a seat and enjoy the show. Absolutely breath taking and relaxing.

“Duomo di Orvieto, Italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Whilst visiting Italy, mainly to see Florence & Rome, I also visited the ancient city of Orvieto, which has an amazing history having been a centre of Etruscan civilisation, a Roman town and a Papal State & Residence. For me there is always at least one 'Wow moment' in each holiday and Orvieto is the star of this one. The old city sits in a commanding position on an imposing rock controlling the road between Rome & florence. I visited with a small group of people, travelling by mini-bus and as we neared Orvieto it was quite an ethereal sight, rising out of the clouds. Our mini bus was able to drive up to the Castle entrance and square, next to the upper cable car station, but some people will use the cable car to come up the hill from the lower level.
The town is a delightful maze of narrow streets leading to some grand palazzos at the Duomo and the Papal Palace. The shops, cafes and bars are all quaint & stylish, but prices are much more reasonable than the well known tourist cities. Orvieto retains its charm and has not been ruined by tourism, although it does have some amazing attractions, including the beautiful Duomo, the Papal Palace, a labyrinth of underground caves, an enormous well built for the popes and a tower that can be climbed to get amazing views acoross the Umbrian countryside,
There is a Tourist Information Office in the main square, just opposite the Duomo or Cathedral dating from 13th & 14th centuries. I was totally awe-struck by the beautiful facade of this building, which has to be seen to be believed. I paid 4 Euros to go inside and was richly rewarded with some amazing sights. The Chapel of San Brizio has glorious frescoes by Signorelli, which in my opinion equal the artwork in the Sistine Chapel!
If you are visiting this part of Italy, don't miss out on the exciting beauty of Orvieto, even if it's just for a day.

“incredible façade”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

The cathedral's façade is simply majestic, even perhaps more impressive than the Duomo in Firenze. A stop that is well worth it if you are driving across Umbria.
