“Great hotel, great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2005

Our family of 4 stayed 3 nights at the Meuble il Riccio in August. We had a beautiful room for 4 with beamed ceilings, comfortable beds and a wonderful Tuscan feel. It was the highlight of our trip and finally a place where we slept well. The owners, Ivana and Gio, were wonderful. She made fresh pastries in the morning for the breakfast and both Ivana and Gio were always pleasant and helpful. They were happy to suggest day driving trips in the area, make dinner reservations and even do our laundry at a fee, of course. The town of Montepuliciano was our favorite Tuscan town that we visited. It is very charming, not too big nor too filled with tourists. The Meuble was definitely what we were looking for in Tuscany- small, clean, good service and a non-tourist Tuscan experience! We would love to return and highly recommend it!

The reviewer of 27 July must be hard to please; I can't believe we stayed in the same place! We loved Meuble Il Riccio! My husband and I stayed there for two nights in May 2005, for 85 euros per night (we had breakfast at a little cafe down the street (2 coffees, 2 pastries, 1 bottle of water) for 5 euros - what a bargain! Our room was a good size with a nice bathroom and all immaculately clean and comfortable. The owners, Gio and Ivana, were very friendly and helpful.
The rooftop terrace has the most amazing views of the surrounding countryside and is a lovely place to enjoy a bottle of the local red wine and cheese & wild boar sausage.
The location of the hotel is great, it is at the highest part of town just off the piazza. We loved Montelpuciano, it was our favourite Tuscan town and we would have loved to stay longer. The streets are very steep so you need to travel light and be reasonably fit to get around. We travelled by train and bus - the bus station is about 30 minutes away although the town mini buses operate a regular service to the station (but not on Sunday mornings).

Very helpful and congenial hosts, clean rooms, very hard pillows (take your own!). Nice convenient location just off the main square, and quiet. Good air conditioner in the room. No complaints - we saw no other hotels in Montepulciano where we would rather have stayed!

First of all, this is not a hotel but a rooming house - it only has 4 rooms; breakfast was offered at a cost of 8 Euro per person (no seconds!) and included pre-packaged tasting pastries and orange drink. Internet use is also offered but this is a service that must also be paid for and the computer is under lock and key at all times. The public room of this establishment is lovely but the guest rooms miss the mark by a long shot. It is too bad that more time was not spent decorating and furnishing the rooms to the same level of quality as the rest of the property. After reading the other reviews for this place on Tripadvisor, and looking at the "hotel's" website, we thought we had made a wonderful choice. Not so..

To make a long story short, my husband and I only slept two hours during the one night we stayed at the Porcupine. The beds were lousy, think $50 mattress and hard pillows(!).. The decor was atrocious, think red, plastic poinsettias in July; think cheap 60's, surrealistic print of amazonian fisherman (real Italian ambiance). The bedspread looked as if it had been laundered hundreds of times which I guess is good (it was clean)? The bathroom was a disaster; we felt that we were in the bathroom in a cabin of a cruise ship (minuscule even for Italy).

The view we had was not of the historic center as advertised but of the backs of buildings which faced (?) the historic center. My memories of the Porcupine include the view of the half-naked neighbor man watering his geraniums and the drunks singing outside the bar half the night (adjacent to the square).

Stay here if you cannot find an alternative; there are plenty of beautiful, reasonably priced, real hotels in this gorgeous part of Tuscany. We found one the following morning after paying the cancellation fees. Happy ending..bad memory...

Stellar hotel in the beautiful town of Montelpulciano. Rooms were clean and quaint and there is a neat terrace on the roof. Found it through trip advisor and was not dissapointed. The town is stunning with several good eating establishments, shops, and wine stores. Hotel owners were totally gracious and accomodating, suggesting places to dine each night. Breakfast in the hotel is excellent for 8 euro per person. Montepulciano is hilly so be ready for a good walk after dinner. About 1 hour to Siena, Florence and Cortona. Enjoy!

I stayed at il Riccio with my adult daughter in early June. We found it to be a lovely small inn with incredible service. The rates are very reasonable and althogh they did not include breakfast, you can have it there (very nice) or walk to a nearby cafe. Our room was a bit small but perfectly comfortable. We did not have a view of the countryside but instead enjoyed looking out at the surrounding streets of this tiny village atop a steep hill. I agree with a previous poster that getting there the first time can be tricky what with winding and very narrow streets. Of course, that is also the charm of the place. We made daily trips to San Gimignano, Siena, etc. but really looked forward to returning to "our" village each evening. Montepulciano is a great town for wine lovers as there are seemingly nonstop tastings at the numerous wine shops in town. Very highly recommended.
