“Wonderful outdoor Hilltop Tuscan Dining surrounded by vineyard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

Last May my wife and I experienced the Avignonesi Vinyard /winery tour followed by outdoor lunch. It was a wonderful time, both educational and appetizing. My research indicated that this winery near Montepulciano offerd the most complete winery tour . I agree. First we strolled through the rolling vineyards accompanied by the knowledgeable tour guide. We were then taken to the cavernous wine cellar where Avignonesi wine is created and stored in huge barrels. Afterwards we were treated to a delicious meal consisting of locally grown vegetables and fowl. Three large tables were set up on a veranda overlooking the lush green vineyards below. Bow tied Waiters graciously served assorted Avignonesi wines accompanying each course. The food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. The view, splendid. A real sense of tranquility in Tusany.

This tour with lunch is a must if you are near Montepulciano.

“Not only an excellent wine estate to visit but an excellent place to dine...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2011

We were well aware of the fame of the Avignonesi before we were going there we already knew that this place was one of the best wine estates of Italy but we have never imagined that this place was offering excellent lunch options to accompany their marvelous wines too...

The staff is very friendly and helping and the place is truly authentic. no matter if you are a wine enthusiast or a culinary expert, in both cases this will place will enchant you. And of course I shouldn't forget the breathtakingly beautiful Tuscany scenery which surrounds all the winery...

“Beautiful setting and great lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011

We toured this winery last week on Oct 20th and it was a wonderful experience. The grounds are gorgeous and very well maintained. The tour guide was very informative about the property and the wine-making process. The tour lasted close to an hour taking us into the fields, then through many different underground cellars and grape drying room. This room was very interesting to see what was probably millions of grapes drying on shelves 30-40 feet high. Although it was raining when time for lunch, the inside room was very nice, the service was attentive, food was delicious and of course the wine was great. The rain stopped just in time for us to stand outside on the patio overlooking the valley. We didn't buy any wine since available back in the states but we did purchase a bottle of the red Vin Santo and drank some at our table after lunch. Allow about 2-3 hours for your visit here if you want to include lunch.

“Tour, Wines & Lunch - fantastic!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

We arrived 45 minutes early and were not warmly welcomed and we thought we had made a big mistake. By the time we were scheduled to tour, a few other couples had arrived. Lorenza was our tour guide and she was absolutely fantastic! She was very informational and educated us on the different ways of growing grapes there (small trees vs. vines). We were also extremely fortunate to see the way they make vin santo grapes as the harvest just happened a few weeks ago. After the 1+ hour tour we headed in for lunch. There are several different choices for lunch - don't cheap out, it is definitely worth it even though it appears pricey. There are 3 courses for 50 Euros (3 wines + 1 dessert wine); 4 courses for 70 Euros (4 tasting & 1 dessert wine) or 95 euros for 5 courses + 5 wines and 1 dessert wine. We splurged and tasted the 1998 Vin Santo (new release, believe it or not) for 25 euro a glass. Saying it was a glass was generous, it was seriously about 1 tablespoon. It was worth it, it was like thick honey.

The food and wine pairing was fabulous:

Antipasti w/Chardonnay pairing (proscuitto, crostini w/chicken pate, crostinit with porcinis in a tomato sauce & pecorino). I don't typically like Chardonnay, but there's was not as oakey and delicious.
Pasta w/pesto sacue which was so tasty; Rosso
Sienese pork fillet with Laurd, Laurel on Sauteed cabbage (purple kale) - Nobile di Montepulciano and Desiderio (Merlot that was rated 91 by Robert Parker)
Ricotta cheese flan with Gewurtztraminer Dessert Wine

The food was so flavoral and good but the view was to die for. We sat outside on a patio overlooking the tuscan valley (and their garden).

it was a very memorable experience and it is highly recommended.

“Fabulous wine, tour and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011

Having been on organised tours, ad-hoc visits and then a tour and lunch at Poliziano last year, we decided to try the lunch and tour at Avignonesi this time around.

The tour was run by Alexander who took us through the history of the company, then out to the vineyards and talked us through some of the specific approaches this winery are now using. Then it was down into the cellars and finally to the Vin Santo room.

After this we were handed over to the lovely Andrea for our five course lunch and accompanying six wines. I had rather expected these to be "tasting" samples but in fact the servings were generous to start with even before the top-ups!!

The food was fabulous and the wines were beautiful as is the view from the restaurant - pictures attached.

One of the signature wines is the Occhio di Pernice. This is a vin santo made from Sangiovese grapes, dried for 6 months, barrel aged for 10 years and then bottle aged for 12 to 24 months. It is €210 for a half bottle but we decided to try a sample for €25. Oh wow, what a stunning wine, expensive but an experience to remember.

The tour and five course lunch is €90 per person but I think for the tour, the wonderful food and the fabulous (and generous) wine it was well worth it. Truly memorable.

The only misgiving I would have is perhaps next time I would get a cab!
