“A grand Tuscan experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Montecatini Terme is at heart a grand spa resort, spa in the real sense of the word of taking the "waters". The Grand Hotel & La Pace is clearly not a modern hotel and does not set out to give you that impression. It's charm like its history is based in the past, no glass and concrete to be seen here just very big stateroom type accommodation for dining and lounging and for Italy - some quite large bedrooms. Yes its old fashioned and that's the charm - as seen in many other reviews there are people like Giuliano in reception and Mario who are the friendly faces, but I found all the staff polite. The room I had was comfortable, a balcony was available as a little bonus. Breakfast was a buffet style with an a la carte menu in support, the buffet at the pool was extensive and at diner the menu again was a la carte. The food was excellent, breakfast was a little "samey" but nothing new there. If you are looking for the Ritz or similar do not come here, but if you are looking for some grand surroundings with a charm distinctly of its time and place then you should not be disappointed.

This is a difficult one! Thank you to Giuliano for being very accommodating and always very obliging with a smile! The rest of the staff could learn a great deal about customer service from you! Apart from the gentlemen on Reception, the Spa staff and the Lady Who offered us a hand with our bags on departure the rest of the staff we met in breakfast and by the pool should be removed as they are frankly rude and have no idea of 'Internationally acceptable levels of customer service'. The Hotel Is definitely tired and is ready for some TLC, the owners should take a serious look at what is on offer and ask themselves whether they feel they are offering real 5 star accommodation and service with Italian flair and finesse. We stayed for 2 nights and had a deluxe room which was of a decent size and had some nice traditional Italian furniture mixed with a not so great 80's style 'ying and yang' headboard. The beds were 2 basic single beds pushed together, the mattresses were fairly cheap domestic type mattresses, not what I would class as 5 star hotel beds at all! The bathrooms in contrast were very nice modern style with twin bowl sinks and bath with shower over and glass screen. Head of Housekeeping - Please go around a selection of rooms and check for dust! The cleaning was not thorough and after complaining about unacceptable levels of dust on the dado rails and beside lamps, it still had not been cleaned and I ended up dusting it myself (sorry about the dirty wet towel!). Also a fabulous balcony let down by dusty and rickety old wooden shutters and the floor covered in bird dirt. The mirrors in the room are opulent guilt framed type but the mirrors themselves are clouded and have seen better days. We used the Pool which was a good size and the water was clean, the pool boy and his accomplice should be sacked as they were most unhelpful and have not got a shred of customer service in them. I had to collect our own sun-lounger cushions on 2 occasions, once when both of them stood watching! The stone flagged area around the pool was disgraceful with debris that had not been swept in a long time, cigarette butts on the floor and chewing gum stuck to the actually quite nice sun lounger furniture. The gardens need a good pruning and the lawn requires a good cut. It's so frustrating when you can see such potential in a well established and important Hotel but no-one seems to care about it! The hotel has some amazing pieces of antique furniture and paintings to match the equally opulent grand rooms with high ceilings and chandeliers but upstairs it is scattered about with huge areas being left bare with big gaps and minimal furnishings on the landings and corridors and thread bare carpets and rugs. Having said all of this I do hope that the management taken note of the comments and those left before, even without a grand budget I do feel that this hotel could once again be very nice, it just requires some strong management and leadership and a good old scrub and polish and some clearing out of some staff who cannot provide the level of customer service that a Hotel of this standing requires. Would I go back, definitely yes, in the hope that next time there has been a big improvement and I can shout from the rooftops about it!

Let me begin by making one thing quite clear. I only stayed in this hotel for one night as the hotel I was due to stay in was fully booked for that night. I did not use the hotel for anything other than sleeping in, and therefore this review is very limited in scope.

The hotel is very old dating back to 1870. According to the hotel information in the room, stars ranging from Gary Cooper to Grace Kelly to Julio Iglesias, have stayed there since. The hotel possesses grandeur but this is now faded and faded beyond an acceptable level. The corridors are huge both in length and height, but the carpet that carries you to your room is threadbare in places. The paintwork in the rooms is chipped and the plaster in the walls and ceiling are cracked. The chair in my room had collapsed with the stuffing hanging out of the bottom, the enamel on the enormous bath was severely chipped in the bottom of the bath.

The staff at reception appear to retain the grandeur that their hotel now lacks, being snooty and off hand to this one night holidaymaker. In reality I could afford to stay there, but I will not. I will stay in a modern, comfortable well facilitised hotel that delivers for its customers today rather than living on glories of the past.

We stayed here for five nights in early September. Like others, I had read the reviews and was nervous about our visit. It is a huge hotel and overall we had a very pleasant experience there.

We found the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and courteous at all times. They want you to enjoy your visit. Guillano in reception could not have been more willing to help in any way and made great suggestions for sightseeing etc. He also has perfect english which makes it so much easier for people like us who have virtually no Italian. Mario runs a very good ship in his restaurant whether you are in the ballroom/dininghall for breakfast, at the poolside for lunch or on the terrace for dinner. All the waiters and waitresses were anxious to please at all times.

The public areas are vast, with plenty of areas to sit and read (and lots of magazines, papers and books left around for your enjoyment.) The park outside the hotel is quiet and surrounds the pool area which is a tranquil haven. Lunch at the pool was a delicious experience but not for those worried about their figures. The amount of food on offer at the buffet lunch was enormous!! Dinner both inside and outside were comfortable, sedate affairs with good food and a good wine list.
Our bedroom was very large but distinctly old fashioned, particularly the bathroom. We had a large bed with pillows so hard I had to ask for softer ones (supplied immediately I requested them) There was a noisy but efficient A/C unit. I was disappointed in our room but only from a decor point of view. This is very much an Italian hotel and I have always found them quirky in their interiors. There is absolutely no doubt that this hotel would benefit hugely from a makeover - one that did not take from the historic features of the hotel but rather enhanced them but having said that, the overall experience was a good one and we would go back.

Room Tip: Speak to the staff at reception to ensure a good room

It was not me who has chosen the hotel...
And when I was reading other reviewers, I was terrified! It supposed to be a nice one week with my wife in Tuscany and I was not ready to spend it in an old building with terrible service...
But luckiliy it was not that bad! It seems that somebody had a really bad luck or very high ambitions.
Good things: its the very city center, main square; at least our room was newly renovated and the same for bath - fresh and clean; fantastic swiming pool and the area - you can easily spend there whole day enjoying sun; staff was friendly and helpfull in everything.
Bad things: beds - you can not call it king size bed if it is two single beds, just putted together (gap between them by the morning was quite big every day...); air conditioning - you can set 18-21C range only or 30-35C if the window is open... What shall you do, if you prefer 23C??? Price - a bit too expensive, but I was there while Miss Italia was ongoing the same place. Overall quality of common areas - days of its glory were some 20-30 years ago. Fantastic building, but crying for renovation and restyling.
My recommendation - if you are in Montecatini Terme because of business or just for few days only - you can survive. If you want to spend more time and your aim is to explore Tuscany - try to find one of small luxury hotels.

Agree with other reviews - it is ratgher old hotel in the need of complete renovation but in the same time you feel the history of that place, spacious public areas, extremely good service in the restaurant, clean rooms and fantastic park with the outdoor pool. Would recommend to stay there.

Stayed one night and got a nice, spacious room with good bed. Spa was small but ok, pool area relaxed. Friendly receptionists. Good breakfast.
