We chose to stay in Mestre because it was less expensive than Venice, and we had read that in Venice you had to walk with your luggage into the hotels. We took a taxi from the airport, which was costly, about 35 euros. We knew we could take the shuttle to the train station, but chose not to. The train station was a short walk away, although there is a construction zone, but there is a pedestrian walkway. The train into Venice was quick and easy. If you are going on a cruise, from the Venice train station it is a short walk to the People Mover, which takes you to the port.
The room was small, as most European hotels, but adequate, and service was good. The breakfast was okay, but the scrambled eggs were always cold. Local restaurants were a bit pricey, but there is a sandwich shop and a McDonalds at the train station if you're really on a budget. There was also a good lunch spot and laundromat on the main street. Go left from the hotel to the first corner, turn left, then right at the corner of the big street. Laundromat is about three blocks down on right, and sandwich shop is on left just before it, with a big glass front, past the big green cross of the pharmacy. The laundromat is modern, and directions in English to explain that you put the money in a central panel, not the machines.
