“Excellent & Welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

We landed in Naples & rented a car. Having driven in Italy before we knew what to expect so were not too intimidated and got to the B&B with only a few wrong turns! Theresa welcomed us warmly, and though we speak little Italian and she doesn't have command of English we were able to communicate our famished and tired state. She sat us in the gazebo-like restaurant and served us a wonderful cabresé salad of fresh tomatoes and soft mozzarella followed by spinach and cheese ravioli in bolognese sauce. What a way to begin our culinary experiences in Italy!

Our room was lovely, with a distant view of Capri off to the north. The mattress was firm and comfortable and the room quiet. We slept well for the three nights there.

Breakfast is served on a long table covered with a variety of pastries, breads, meat & cheese as well a boiled eggs for those of us who prefer an American breakfast. A variety of coffee alternatives was much appreciated as well as fresh juice and fruit. We did not go away hungry!

The highlights of our stay were chatting with Michele who speaks English well and was very knowledgeable about all topics we chose to discuss with him. He is also the chef. One evening he made us pizza which had just enough wood oven taste, thin crust and delicious toppings for us to declare it was the best pizza we had in our 2 1/2 weeks in Italy. To top it off, Michele makes his own limoncello from the lemons in the back yard. It was a perfect way to finish the meal. Again we have to say it was the best we had on our trip, hands down.

Finally, Massa Lubrense is a beautiful area where we hiked daily on the cliffs overlooking Capri and the Bay of Naples. Tutu Bella!

Thank you Theresa and Michele!

Stayed at De Maria House for 4 nights on last leg of 2 week Italy vaca (Siena; Rome; Amalfi Coast) . If I visited Italy again, I would be happy to spend my entire time at De Maria house and the Amalfi Coast.

While in Italy, we toured by rental car. Driving from Sorrento to De Maria is not for the faint hearted. However, being from DC, we were able to grit it out and we found our destination just fine.

During our stay, it was like visiting family. Management bent over backwards to make us comfortable, facilitate our day trips and always provided good advice/recommendations.

Rooms are very quiet, clean, spacious. The view out our window was breathtaking.

Breakfast was included and was excellent. Our dinner meals were also excellent and always seemed "special". Great desserts!

Hotel is convenient to (within easy walking distance) Sant Agata, which offers interesting shopping and excellent restaurants. We toured the Amalfi Coast via boat, one of the most relaxing, beautiful, memorable days of our entire vacation, all coordinated by De Maria management. Hotel is on a public bus line which provides very easy, safe, convenient, cheap trasportation to Sorrento. Everyone in this area of Italy was very warm and welcoming.

De Maria House is OUTSTANDING! Highly recommended!

We stayed here for a week in September 2012. As others have said, the hotel was more like staying with a family than an impersonal hotel - some may find this not to their taste. We had a very warm welcome from Michel and Theresa and their family and staff, who were all very helpful during our stay. We felt the hotel represented excellent value for money.

The rooms (we were on the first floor, ie on the same level as the restaurant / breakfast room) were spacious, well decorated and furnished, and comfortable, with a view across the trees to the sea. They have been recently refurbished and ours had a mysterious minor fault on the electrical system (the light came on during the night a couple of times) but this wasn't a big problem.

The Pic-Nic restaurant (we ate on the terrace most of the time) had a good range of very well prepared dishes and the pizzas in particular were some of the best we've tasted. Prices are very reasonable and we found ourselves eating here every night except one - the exception saw us walking up the hill 500 metres or so to have a meal which was nowhere near as good as the Pic-Nic but about twice the price!

We arrived by hire car having driven from Rome in a torrential thunderstorm and have to say that the directions supplied by the hotel, although accurate, lacked somewhat in detail (eg how far is it from Meta to the Positano junction?) so we did get a little frustrated, especially when the satnav which we'd eventually reverted to tried to direct us up a footpath (Garmin Nuvi). I was also pleased I had previously checked the location on Google Streetview so I knew what I was looking for otherwise it would have been easy to drive straight past.

Driving around the very narrow roads, with blind bends lined with unforgiving stone walls could be tricky - the local buses were good although not always running when you wanted them. The local town, Sant'Agata was pleasant but nothing special. Sorrento was worth a trip but again not an outstanding destination. Our favourite trips were to Herculaneum and Paestum.

The Sorrento peninsula is highly rated by many for its views but we were a little disappointed in that aspect and felt we had been in much nicer places in France.

All in all, an excellent stay but probably not one we'd repeat.

The De Maria House is located in a very peaceful and quiet area of Pastena. The bus stop is adjacent to the B&B, bus tickets cost 1 Euro 20 or 2 Euro 40 and you can buy them at the Tabachi that is situated just around the corner from the B&B and it will take you to the bus station in sorrento.

The rooms are very spacious and clean, maid service everyday. En-suite bathroom is a perfect size with a large shower. All the necessary amenities such as TV, free Wi-Fi, hairdryer and small fridge are provided.

Food at the De Maria House is lovely and when we stayed there we had most of the meals that were on the menu. Miquel and Giuseppe made fantastic pizzas and one of our favourite meals was spaghetti bolagnese which was delicious, all made from home grown ingredients. Theresa and Augusta were very helpful with planning our daily excursions and gave us all the relevant information like maps, pamplets and general information about the area.

The De Maria House is a family run B&B and when we stayed there we felt like part of the family and we would definitely go back there again. Every family member went out of there way to make our stay a pleasurable one.

My wife and I left De Maria House only this morning (9th Aug) having stayed for 5 nights and felt compelled to review De Maria ASAP. We went to celebrate our paper wedding anniversary and we couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more. We were made to feel extremely welcome from the off by our hosts, and we were overwhelmed by their kindness and helpfulness.

We ate their all but one evening, and the food was great - traditional Italian - fantastic pasta, and pizzas straight from the pizza oven. The calamari was also a personal favourite. The view from the restaurant terrace was a beauty too.

Our room was impeccably clean, and had all the mod cons, as well as the view. The view comes from being relatively high up the mountain, so not in Sorrento, but that is reflected in the price, which we thought was incredibly reasonable.

We hired a scooter from Sorrento and got around on this to the beach below Nerrano, Positano and Amalfi, but we realise this mode of transport is not for the faint hearted and not for everyone. The altenative is a hire-car, but the SITA bus service works well, and there's a bus stop over the road from De Maria's front door.

All in all we had a fantastic stay, thank you Augusta and family. Highly recommended!

The De Maria House is something everyone should experience once in a lifetime. Instead of the pokerfaced receptionists at hotels with pools we have had the pleasure to enjoy the hospitality of the wonderful De Maria family. We chose to stay at The De Maria House because of the many many positive comments and high rankings on Tripadvisor and it turned out to be the best decision for our one week vacation.
Everything written in the comments is true; the house is very clean, comfortable and of course beautiful. It is really good to see how effective this family business is working. Theresa’s meals are perfectly made and very tasty and Michele….Michele bakes 50 years of expertise in his pizza. Try it and you will never forget what a REAL pizza is like, made from home-grown REAL ingredients. With their children, Augusta combining generations with great taste and Giuseppe serving guests with extreme courtesy, they make a great team. The breakfast was good and we had each of our dinners in the PicNic, which has a surprisingly beautiful view on the valley and the island of Capri (!).

Should you have any questions about your next day trip don’t hesitate to ask the family for information because they know everything about the region. Make sure you book your tickets to Capri with them!

We recommend you rent a car or preferably a scooter, because the buses are okay and they take you wherever you would like to but in the main seasons they are usually crowded. Driving is also okay, don’t worry, the Italians are great drivers.

In the end we would like to thank the De Maria family for the great time we had at their B&B. We had the feeling that we were part of their family for one week.

We wish them good health and success in their business so that everyone can enjoy their hospitality.
