I have recently visited the island of sicily and it was a very pelasant trip. People were friendly and helpful...except with one main exception: Ristorante Luna Rossa.
After going around the beautiful town of Marsala, me and my travel companions were hungry and tired and entered the abovementioned restaurant. After we were sat down (in a tent like part of the restaurant), we were given a pizza only menu. We later politely inquired whether they have any other menus and they begrudgingly gave us a fish menu.
Meanwhile one of my friends needed to go to the ladies room and after politely knocking to see if it was occupied, she was greeted by a gruff male voice. She left and came back to the table, but this was not to be the end of it. A man came to our table (not sure if he is the owner or the manager of the restaurant) and arrogantly told my friend "you were the one who interrupted me?". She replied by apologising for the intrusion and explained herself by saying "but it was the ladies room" to which he replied in a raised voice (so all the other patrons could hear) " it is MY room".
At this point we had already had had enough, but food was ordered and we did not want to overeact. The sad part is that we should have. That arrogant and rude episode was not to be the last of the evening. We had to go through the waiters asking us if we were ready for the bill every 5 minutes (as if they couldnt wait to get rid of us). Later when the bill came, it contained things we did not order. And worse of all we had to go through listening to the owner/manager making snide comments about us, to other patrons sitting at the table behind us. The comments were made in Italian and this person knew all of us spoke and understood his native language, so he did this to insult us indirectly.
Logically we did not leave a tip . The waiter who was serving us was as rude as the owner/manager (I think rudeness is part of the job requirement). When the owner/manager realised we left no tip, he followed us outside and shouted across the street some more sarcastic remarks.
We came out fuming from there, because we had never been treated in such a manner...and for no reason at all.
later in the evening we were speaking to a friendly Italian man and when we told him what had happened to us , he replied by saying " they always do that"...so this is apparently a recurring thing. The food was mediocre...definitely not worth going through that abuse for..
Be warned don't go there!!
