“Better to forget”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2010

Definitely not a 4 * hotel by all means. Wi-fi functions only close to the reception, the swimming pool nobody uses since it is not heated, breakfast is a total disaster, service etc. below expectations.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2009

We've just returned from our two-week stay at Mondial and we agree with one of the provious reviews that Mondial could be one of the best 3 star hotels in Versilia, but it's definitely not a four star luxury hotel as it classifies itself. The hotel is fresh and pleasant looking, with good and varied breakfast, but that's not enough to win the four stars, especially not a '4 star luxury' classification.
Our first disappointment was our 'romantic' junior suite. I understand that pictures on the hotel website can be misleading, but when you book a room called a 'suite' you expect a larger room, with some sitting area. In fact our suite looked just like a small double, without any sofa (we were explained that all suites with sofas were booked). What was even more surprising, it did not have any regular shower cabin or bath. There was a jacuzzi with a handheld shower hose in it right in the small hall of the room (not in a separate room as it is said on the hotel website), without any shower curtain or shower walls. Maybe, seeing your partner taking shower can be romantic, but it is definitely not very convenient and practical and we always had water from the shower right in front of our room door. If such a room were called a 'double with jacuzzi' and priced as a double, we would not be so disappointed, but when you book a suite and pay for a suite, you definitely expect something bigger and at least with a regular shower.
Besides, there were no such standard things in the room as price list for the mini bar, no room service menu (maybe there is no room service at all), no list of phone numbers for reception and other hotel services. Besides, the night receptionist does not speak English, so if you do not speak Italian, address all you requests to the reception before the night shift. Room stock of shampoo, shower gel and body lotion is replenished irregularly. Cotton pads were brough only three times during two weeks.
As we were going to check out early, we asked the reception the day before to give us some snacks instead of breakfast and the receptionist promised to arrange it. However, when I asked the night reseptionist again in the morning where we could get the snacks he seemed not to understand anything. So, eventually we did not get anything.
Another problem with the hotel is beach and swimming pool. The swiming pool itself is nice and clean, with pleasant soft music playing all day, but there are definitely not enough chaise longues for all guests. So, you can find some other people on your sunbeds when you return from lunch even if you had left your staff on the sunbeds.
The hotel has arrangement with three beaches. When we arrived, all these beaches were booked, so we found another beach which had vacant sunbeds, but they did not provide towels. So we went back to the hotel and asked for pool towels. The hotel staff refused, saying that they give towels only if we go to one of their three beaches and suggested that we should go and buy our own towels. I do not think is a 4star luxury service.
As for the pool, there is no pool attendant to make sure there are always fresh pool towels (in the afternoon there are often no towels left at the pool) and help you with umbrellas etc.
It's rather a long review, but we decided to write it so that other travellers knew what to expect. It is could be an excellent three-star hotel, but it is not a 4 star luxury anyway.

We travelled to Tuscany for the Andrea Bocelli concert, which was AMAZING. Then on to Volterra, Florence and then Marina Di Pietrasanta
We are really disappointed with the hotel where we stayed for 4 nights. We were the only English in this hotel, which we normally enjoy. But not this time. The night porter could speak no English so when we had to mention the terrible smell in our room on Friday evening he could not help. We just had put up with it. The restaurant manager was not interested in his English clients and was much keener to serve his other guests. The young male waiter from Naples was very attentive as were the young ladies who all work very hard at Breakfast lunch and dinner. Breakfast was OK with a good selection. We were not made aware of the beach facility and stayed round the pool which was squashed to say the least. We would not return. We travel a lot and do not make poor reviews Please see other reviews for this trip including Florence and Volterra

We only go to 4 star hotels, but this is not one.
This could be one of the best 3 star hotels in Italy (which it was until last year), however, reborn as a four star hotel it is basically a ripoff. Like, even if you covered the walls of your closet with gold leafs, it would still remain a closet. The hotel should be reclassified as a 3 star.
It is a typical, modern, simple hotel building dressed up with beautiful designer stuff, very stylish, elegant interior, tasteful details.
The most obvious characteristic of this hotel is the lack of space. It is jammed in the middle of other villas so that you can hear and see the neighbor fixing his car. The pool is good size but they could only place a dozen or so sunbeds around it and the fence is so close to the pool that literally a half meter from your head cars are driving by in the side street.
The rooms are small, not to mention the junior suites (where we stayed with our family friends). Because of the small closet space, be prepared for permanent hopping over your lugagge in your room.
Half of the building enjoys the smell of the kitchen.
Parking space is so small that the personnel has a hard time moving cars in and out all day.
The best part of the hotel is the young staff that is working hard to make you feel that you are getting four star service.
By the way, wellness area is really beautifully done, however, fitness means two orphaned bicycle machines.
In spite of all elegance, you feel cheated because for that price you can get real four star hotels in the Viareggio area with great buildings situated in large gardens.

Pap6, Booking manager at Mondial Resort & Spa, responded to this review, July 31, 2009
In response to the letter written on the 19th of July, 2009; we found the comments of the client unfounded and somewhat unkind, considering that could significantly damage the well established image of our hotel. Based on the description, it appears that the main concerns of this client are the dimensions of our hotel, which we consider should be evaluated on the Italian reality and not on the United States setting concept. However, we are prone to believe that the true motivations that could have generated the unfair comments are rather related to our hotel's cancelation policy during the pick season, charging a penalty for an early departure. In this case, our client expressed its desire to leave 4 days prior to its departure, motivating the inclement weather. We re-informed the client of the incurred penalty, at which he resentfully consented to remain. We conclude by saying that we hope this client can recall the positive aspects found in our hotel, and consider re-visiting us in the near future.

The hotel itself was very good. We had not very spacious but very nice, clean and stylish room. They had good pasta in the restaurant. The service in the restaurant is also very good. The receptionists are responsive, always ready to answer our questions, especially the russian guy Vladimir.
2 things we disliked were:
- the maid was bringing 2 shampoos + 2 conditioners but no shower gel. Once she brought 1 bath towel while there were 2 of us.
- despite of the fact that we were given towels for the beach every day (without any conditions), on the last day the unfriendly guy at the reception (Massimo) refused to give us towels explaining that we are not going to the hotel's beach (the hotel has the agreement with two beaches and we prefered another one). I consider this is not acceptable for a 4* luxe hotel.

We stayed for 3 nights this past May. We booked based on just a couple of reviews that were posted at that time, but also because of how pleasant and helpful Marilena, a member of the front desk staff, was when we called to reserve.

We booked a junior suite with a jacuzzi and a balcony with stunning views of the Ligurian Sea on one side and the magnificent Apuan Alps on the other. On a clear day, you could see as far as Cinque Terre and at night the lights all the way on the West coast of Liguria.

The rooms (as well as the hotel), is decorated in whites and blacks with a very chic modern style. The bed is excellent! My only observation is that, in a junior suite, there should be a stand-up shower in addition to the jacuzzi. Toiletries, towels and the rest were all of good quality, and the rooms has a large flat screen TV set and internet service available.

The breakfast buffet was the best we had in our more than 2 weeks vacation in Italy with excellent pastries, eggs, meats, charcuterie, fruits, juices and prosecco.

The front desk staff, in addition to Marilena, was very accommodating and nice.

Pool, as everyone says, it's very nice, albeit with a small deck around it. It was fine when we were there as the hotel was not full, but I wonder how crowded it would get during the hight of the summer season.

The hotel’s location is excellent, whether you are just coming to the beach, or, like us, wanted to also sight see; it was easy to spend half a day at the beach and enjoy the rest of the day sightseeing the inland towns and Cinque Terre.

My only complaint was with room service; one of the evenings we decided to stay at the hotel and have something to eat on the balcony watching a very dramatic sunset. We bought a couple of things in the grocery store and we decided to complement that with a salad we ordered from the hotel’s restaurant. I will not bore everyone with the details, but the point was that we did not get what we ordered correctly, and it took 4 trips upstairs by the server to get it all straighten out. The room service staff, although eventually accommodating, was not so at first, but rather “annoyed” by our request.

Despite these minor inconveniences, the hotel was an excellent choice.

I was really surprised at the level of comfort and beauty and cleanliness....the elegant staff were so accomodating...the restaurant is perfect! The bar wonderful and the bar snacks are certainly not typical:smoked salmon, fragrant cheeses,polenta...yummy! Large rooms, great showers, comfortable beds...i cannot wait to return!
