Due to availibility problems we had to split our Venice stay between two hotels just off Venice Island. Having stayed the night before at the Novotel Mestre the Mercure Marghera turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. We arrived to check in very early as we didn't want to waste too much of our day changing hotels and were greeted by the friendly reception manager who advised that although the rooms were not yet available we were welcome to check in, (our allocated room numbers etc were provided and noted on our luggage for later reference) leave our luggage there and lock our valuables in a safe box whilst we spent the day sightseeing. He also directed us to the nearby bus stop where we could use the transport pass we had purchased the day before. When we returned later that night after our day sightseeing and dinner we were also very impressed with the rooms which were large and well set out. The bathroom was also very large, well set out and modern with a really good sized bath and everything else you could possibly need. Instead of the usual little soaps there was liquid soap in a dispenser provided for both the basin and shower. I felt this was a much better idea. The beds were really comfortable with good quality pillows - something you don't always find at hotels. The aircon also worked well. Breakfast was also a better standard than we had experienced at both the Novotel Mestre and also the Novotel in Florence. I had some problems with the foyer computer and the staff were really helpful and quickly solved the issue for me. Comparing the 2 hotels( Novotel Mestre and Mercure Marghera) we stayed in whilst visiting Venice the Mercure is by far the superior hotel for a number of reasons - Firstly the price per night was much cheaper, the rooms were bigger and more comfortable, the breakfast more enjoyable, service was good at both but from my experence at the Mercure was that the staff there were more helpful overall, nothing was faulty in the rooms at the Mercure( this may be because it was newer than the Novotel) and the public transport available from the Mercure stop to and from Venice Island was available later at night. Given all of this I would definately stay at the Mercure next time I was visiting Venice.
