“at the Cristallo with Riviera”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

This was the second time my wife and I have used Riviera and we had an excellent holiday in early May despite a couple of rainy days (dont forget your pacamacs like we did). The hotel is very comfortable and always very clean. Unfortunately, we didnt book a lake view room and we were initially disappointed with the rear view but there was so much seating on the sun terraces and in the bar area i'm not sure it mattered much anyhow. Our rear room 103 was compact, no balcony, yet very comfortable but do not expect breathtaking views. The hotel is run very efficiently and they went out of their way to make sure my dietary needs were met. I'm not a lover of pasta or cheese but i never went hungry without a course. The food was good for a 3* hotel and service was efficient and friendly. 15e for a bottle of house wine seems dear but i wish i brought some home.
Riviera holidays include touring trips which we found were always efficiently managed and we got to see far more then if we had went there ourselves. the Dolomites trip was our favourite, we found Venice overrated (yes we did the gondola bit around the back canals) but we loved Verona (each to their own of course). the tour guide Wendy was very good, knowledgeable, friendly and caring (Wendy made me add that bit).
my only whinge.. i felt the hotel with riviera was too quiet with no evening entertainment but that probably suits most people travelling with riviera as they tend to be shall we say rather mature in life as i am, but Im sure some of them would have loved the hotel just to put on some kind of music/singing event.
didnt even get a song on the gondola either..whats up Italy, have you lost your voice?
would we go back? to this hotel and area, probably not as we want to travel to different places but lake garda is beautiful so maybe one day.

Room Tip: book the front with a balcony and lake view, but if you cant then don't worry just use the rooft...

This is a 3 star hotel with accommodation for 94 people, run by the Moretti family.
Our 2nd floor bedroom was small with a flat screen T.V. fastened high on to the wall. It was, however, well furnished with matching wardrobe, dressing table, bed head and bedside tables and two chairs, all having flower motifs. The comfortable bed had sheets, one blanket and bed cover and three pillows . There was a small charge for the key operated safe in the wardrobe. There was a modern press button system of shutters and a small balcony with a table and two chairs, separated by partitions from other balconies. The view of the lake was wonderful and well worth the supplement. The heating controls were easy to operate. The bathroom had the usual quality fitments, plus a bathroom stool, and the water was always hot. The good quality towels were changed daily. We were told that the tap water is spring water, clear, cold and suitable for drinking.
The three course Dinner was ordered the previous evening from a choice of three for the 1st and main course, but with no choice for the dessert. There was, in addition, a buffet table of starter dishes of amazing variety. All the food was of excellent quality and very well cooked and served. The emphasis was on Italian dishes and there was always meat and fish on the menu. The Saturday night Gala Dinner was excellent and the chef was applauded.
All unfinished bottles, whether of wine or water, are marked with your table number and put on your table next evening. The bar is a popular area for sitting in the evening before and after the meal. Coffee is not served at the end of dinner, but many guests buy coffee at the bar. No entertainment was provided.
Breakfast was a buffet style meal with a choice of two cereals, a little cheese, a few cold meats, a choice of bread and cake (including the previous evening's dessert) and a machine for tea and coffee. There was always a choice of fresh fruit, as well as tinned fruit and fruit juices and bottled water.
The swimming pool had been filled, but was not yet in use (at the end of April) and the grass was long. There were few people using the 3rd floor sun terrace which had a plentiful supply of sun loungers. Towels for swimming cost 5 euros each. When sitting outside, there was noticeable traffic noise from the main road below the hotel.

It's a very pleasant walk along the lakeside into the town of Malcesine. There is a tourist bus that departs from the bus station near the town hall on the hour from 8am until 1am (not 3pm) and costs 1euro. Our stop is the first one and is just down the road from the hotel at Via Puri. A taxi from town costs 10 euros, both in the afternoon and late evening.

Walking along the lakeside (in both directions from the hotel and also beyond the castle) is very popular both with local people and tourists and there are plenty of seats.

The castle in Malcesine is well worth the 6 euro entry fee with marvelous views, especially from the tower; and a natural history museum section with a very modern lay-out. The Captain's Palace has a free entry art exhibition on the ground floor and a programme of 9 pm Thursday concerts on the first floor. Everyone, including dogs and babies in buggies, seems to go up Mount Baldo by cable car. The 2nd one revolves (very slowly). It is only 9 euros for a return ferry ticket to Limone, just across Lake Garda.

Room Tip: It is worth paying a supplement for a room with a front facing lake view. First floor rooms have an...

We've just returned from an absolutely super Riviera Holidays trip and were so pleased that we booked the Cristallo. On arrival we were delighted to see that the exterior and public areas of the hotel are actually much nicer than they look in the photos. Our pretty lake view room was clean and comfortable with a lovely big bed, and good pillows, bedding and towels. The food was unpretentious, tasty and plentiful - and the house wine is very drinkable! The Cristallo is very much a family hotel, Maria and her staff were friendly and helpful and we thought it was good value for the money we paid. Malcesine has got to be one of the nicest places we've been to (imagine an Italian version of Rye or York - only more so!) and it's worth exploring the castle and battling with the people who don't queue (can't mention the nationality but they put their towels on the sunbeds at dawn) to go on the cable car.

Room Tip: We were pleased we upgraded to the lake view room. We had room 209.

Nothing was a surprise when we got to the hotel the recent reviews helped. We booked a lake view room which was worth it. A very good view, great to watch the sun come up over the far side of the lake. The room was very clean and fresh towels each day. Shower was spot on. We travelled with Riviera Holidays and soon made friends with our daily breakfast friends and coach friends. Buffet breakfast was fine and plenty of choice. Evening meal consisted of a buffet style starter with many salad choices and then a main course which you selected from a menu the night before, including a dessert. The staff worked hard and were very friendly. They had a system that if you ordered a bottle of wine with your meal they would keep any remains over for the next meal.
Our organised trips were excellent and the tour guides were very very good. everything was carefully thought through and if we were going to be late back to the hotel our evening meal was still ready for us. My main memory of the dining room was that it was very pink!! There was a safe in the hotel room which you paid a small amount for.
Malcesine was a brilliant base. The cobbled streets around the base of the castle are so unique, the bars on the waters edge were very welcoming and the cable car up to the mountain tops is a must. You can catch a ferry across to Limone and other towns on the lake. We walked down along the lake to the town every night and found a different place to have a relaxed drink and watch the reflections on the water. Our break was from 15th of Oct and we had delightful sunny weather, it was very obvious that the town was starting to shut down a bit for winter but the lack of hustle and bustle was quite endearing. We definitely want to go back. I agree with many,..... the hotel was a perfect base for a holiday.

We have just returned from a week at the Cristallo. Our double room was at the back of the hotel with alleged "mountain views". Apart from the room being tiny with no balcony, the view from our window was of derelict houses and a building site complete with crane. The mountains were in the distance. Maria is a hard headed businesswoman who runs her hotel with a rod of iron. The food was plentiful but very basic and boring and served on the dot of 7 o'clock or hard luck. This hotel is very regimented and has CCTV everywhere and gave out the feeling that guests were a "necessary evil". The atmosphere was not at all relaxing and welcoming as a good hotel should be.
On the plus side, the hotel was spotlessly clean and the scenery in the area was stunning. Pity about the hotel!

Room Tip: Don't ask for a "mountain view"

Our recent week at the Hotel Cristallo was thoroughly enjoyable. The staff were friendly and extremely efficient. The standard of cleanliness was very high. The food was very good, particularly in view of the fact that Maria's kitchen staff were coping with fairly large numbers of guests arriving at the same time each evening to eat, and we did not have to wait long between courses. The view of the lake from our balcony was superb, worth paying extra for, and it was very pleasant to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy the night views of the reflections of the lights from the villages on the other side of the lake. The road between the hotel and the lake was busy at times, and care had to be taken to reach the passage down to the lake; however, the road was quiet in the evenings and our sleep was never disturbed. It was not too far to walk into Malcesine, following the lakeside most of the way. We would recommend the Cristallo as a well-run, clean and friendly place to stay.

Room Tip: Go for the lake view rooms - worth it.

Maria and her whole staff are so kind and friendly its really like visiting friends than coming back to the Cristallo in lovely Malcesine. The whole hotel is spotless and the food superb, however, what is the real draw is the lakeview from the bar area - magnificent! You can sit there for hours and just savour beautful Lake Garda with the mountains in the background - truly a piece of heaven on earth!!

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra for a lake view
