“major air conditioning issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Plusses about this place: the view is magnificient--the beach is incredible and so picturesque. the location is great--right across from the beach and the extended dock to walk out on. The rooms were nice and laid out well--big rooms as well.

negatives: we had major issues with our air conditioning. major. We finally got moved to another room the last night while leaving our stuff in the room below. We had requested this numerous times, but until the air started flooding the bathroom and the manager actually came to the room to verify temperature rather than relying on the computerized indicator on main floor, we received no response. I must say--the manager was incredibly apologetic and immediately corrected the hotel's previous inaction. I totally respect that.

Without the air issues and lack of response from staff (before the manager's), this would be ranked higher, but this was an expensive hotel (VERY), and we expected at least the minimum! The NEW room was glorious--sigh!

Room Tip: beach view rooms have MAJOR sun in the evening; mountain views MAJOR sun in the morning--decide whic...

stayed two nights at the lovely Grand Hotel Riviera Hotel last week, July.
Although the reception and common areas like the restaurant needs updating the rooms themselves are timelessly stylish having just been refurbished. The brand new spa is very smart and comes complete with spa pool, sauna, steam room and beauty treatment room which is great for such a small hotel. The staff are great including the Food & Beverage Manager Alessandro Dini who is extremely polite attentive and a credit to the hotel. Will go back

Room Tip: good quiet location near Forte di Marmi with sea views

We last stayed at this hotel 5 years ago and had been regular visitors for some time before the hotel was refurbished. We were very pleased we returned.

Our junior suite was at the front on the fourth floor and the standard of finish in both furnishings and fittings was excellent. Perfect cleanliness. The air con worked a treat.

The friendliness and quality of service from all staff was great. This is one of the few hotels where I run up a bar tab and when settling up at the end of the week encounter no problems. At breakfast the maitre di and the head waiter run a well organised and quality buffet service.

One of the other reasons we like to use this hotel is because it is one of the very few on this stretch of beach with a swimming pool - we therefore avoid the sand and the high cost of hiring sun loungers and cabana.

They now also have a health spa on the first floor but we did not use it on this occasion - probably on our next visit.

Our fellow guests were a great mixture of Italian, French, British and Eastern European.

Room Tip: Rooms on the fifth floor have balconies but do not include a junior suite. Rooms at the front do pi...

We spent 4 nights at this hotel in May, getting a really good off-season rate. Due to the early season, the hotel was actually undergoing some works, but this did not bother at all our staying. The building from the outside looks quite old-fashioned, as it is for the lobby and the bar/restaurant area, certainly in need of a bit of renovation (which seems to be already planned from what we heard). On the other hand, most part of the rooms have been recently refurbished and they fully meet what you would expect from a 4 stars hotel. The other good side of the early season was that we could pick our favourite room, a corner deluxe on the top floor. The room was quite big (especially for italian standard), with modern light furniture, comfy bed and hardwood floor. The bathroom was also big and spotless clean, with separate shower and even a jacuzzi nicely settled under the window. The real plus of the deluxe rooms on the top floors are the balconies, with stunning views of the beach on the west side and of the spectacular mountains on the east side. The room has a good size closet with electronic safe, working table (free wi-fi is provided), minibar and TV offering a good range of sat channels including SKY TV.
The only minor improving I could suggest to make it perfect: offer bathrobes and slippers, better and bigger towels, higher quality bedsheets and change the old blanket with a more comfortable light duvet.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and it is standard quality for an italian hotel (which means that could be easily improved offering a choice of hot dishes and more fresh fruits and juices), anyway everything was good and the waiters always smiling and helpful.
The kindness of the hotel staff is another positive aspect, with a special mention for the wonderful Sandra at the front-desk.
The swimming-pool is not really big but it was nice for me to have a comfy sunbed, as the season was still too windy for the beach. Another suggestion that I could make is to offer to the guests some bikes, as in this area it is really nice to ride along the beach promenade.
Overall a great staying, we'll be back for sure!

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms on the top floors are big and have nice balconies with stunning views!

Just back from a week at the Grand Hotel and Riviera. The Hotel is centrally located with public transport outside the door which takes you on a return trip to Pisa Airport. The views from the hotel are stunning, from our shower we could view the Tuscan Mountains and from the room, we had a beautiful view of the ocean and the pool.
The staff are polite and professional. The rooms are spacious and very clean (cleaned daily). The rooms are equipped with blackout blinds and excellent air conditioning.
The hotel has a nice pool with lots of loungers and towels available.
Breakfast caters for most tastes and the staff are very helpful. The restaurant and bar are expensive, this is pretty much the only fault but the area as a whole is expensive.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 4th floor ... a large corner rooms with amazing views and lots of space. Room 4...

I have just returned from a week staying in this Hotel. I found the staff very helpful, special thanks to the Blonde Lady on reception whom I found to be very helpful and kind. The waiting staff were very attentive and as I was with a large group of over 50 Irish on a Travel Department Holiday they coped very well.
The waiting staff also worked behind the bar and I found them to be very cheerful and helpful.
I really enjoyed the HUGO cocktail.
The Hotel is in a fantastic location with beautiful views of the sea, I could actually hear the waves crashing on the beach from my bedroom.
This is a great Hotel with nice food in a fantastic location.

Room Tip: Room 405 is a fantastic double with great views

My wife, sister and brother in law were looking for a 2 bedroom place near Viareggio and this place came up on our search. I was already a bit taken aback by the 300 euro a night price tag but the photos looked ok and the pool looked great.

When we checked in there was only one bedroom not two as advertised. This might suit a family with two small children, not 4 adults as we were. The promise of free wireless internet was useless as there was no available connections to the wifi for the entire time we were there. Reception were extremely unhelpful in resolving this issue saying the signal strength was weak. The Wifi signal was fine and I could connect to it, but there were simply no available connections. I would guess that there would be no more than 20 connections available to the WIFI at any point in time. The shower leaked as well and every time someone had a shower, water would come out from the side wall.

The only saving grace was the pool and the location. The pool was extremely well maintained and the location was right next to the beach with lots of restaurants and bars in the close vicinity.

If I had my time over again, I would rather stay back in viareggio at a better hotel for the same price.
