I spent a week at Corte Dei Memoli whilst exploring the heel of Italy. I loved it, despite the difficulties in communicating face-to-face in English with the delightful owners, Giovanni and Silvana. We were able to solve this impasse easily by using email and google translate!
From my initial contact many months beforehand, every email was answered promptly. When I informed Giovanni that I was flying into Brindisi and catching a bus to Lecce, and would appreciate directions to the B&B, he offered to pick me up from the bus terminal. There is no way I would have found the location otherwise.
The location is very convenient – 7 minutes in one direction to the train station and regional museum; 5 minutes in another direction to the local fresh food market and nearby supermarket (not large, but adequate); and 6 minutes in another direction to the main square, Piazza San Oranzo.
B&B is a misnomer – there are 4 fully functional apartments! I stayed in La Botte, which was spacious and well appointed. I had reserved Gli Archi (because it had an oven), but ceiling renovations were underway when I visited.
Where to start? The level of cleanliness was exceptional throughout, and there was no noise whatsoever.
The kitchen had a 2 burner gas plate, good quality saucepans, cutlery, crockery, glassware etc. There was even a blender and a salad spinner! Stocks included a lovely local extra virgin olive oil, juices, bottles of water, croissants, cornflakes, grissini, jams, nutella, freshly ground coffee, milk, flavoured teas and more!
The dining table seated six, and there was a two seater lounge, a small TV and a large set of draws. Each of the apartments has access to the communal courtyard, with a round table and benches.
The bed was very comfortable, with quality linen and excellent bedside lighting. My one niggling criticism is of the pillows, which were too thick and hard for my liking, but that is common throughout Italy. There were two wardrobes in the bedroom, providing generous storage space.
The bathroom was very functional and well appointed – toilet and bidet; large thick towels on a heated towel rack; excellent shower; toiletries etc.
All this and more for a measly 50 euro (single) or 60 euro (double) in the low season.
It is a no brainer - go now, and don’t consider staying anywhere else!! Lecce is a beautiful city, and very non-touristy. Giovanni and Silvana are exceptionally generous hosts.
