“great last min find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Within the walls of the old city, this was a lovely hotel, clean but dated rooms, they even have old panels on the bedside to call the maid, and reception. The bathroom was very modern though, and the desk staff are wonderful and friendly.

This is our second stay at The Grand Hotel Bastiani in the past couple of years. We LOVE this hotel. The staff is over the top professional, kind and helpful. The elegant charm of the property is marvelous. The rooms are very large and very well appointed. The bath is also very large with marvelous shower-tub combination. Tremendous storage space with personal safe. The winding marble staircase - beautiful. Bicycles are available, but everything is within walking distance. The hotel is located within the walls of an ancient Roman city filled with charm and beauty......but no automobiles! Perfect for a relaxing vacation. The best is that this wonderful village has not been discovered by many tourists and is unspoiled. Filled with outdoor cafes and charming shops. Treat yourself and experience REAL luxury....stay at the Grand Hotel Bastiani.

Room Tip: Don't thinks there is a bad one!

Grosseto is an interesting small city south of Pisa with 18th C protective walls, renaissance buildings and recently restored Duomo in a large central piazza. The city is lively without the blatant tourism which has overwhelmed many tuscan cities.
The Bastiani is in a quiet piazza just off the main piazza and close to the Duomo. The hotel is imposing but not too grand. The bedroom was quiet and comfortable with good bathroom. Buffet breakfast was excellent. The hotel provides cycles for guests which is an excellent way to explore the city and its walls. There are excellent restaurants a short walk from the hotel and with sensible prices. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Bastiani for 4 nights while on business in the area.
The location is perfect for strolling inside the walled center of town.
Parking was very easy, just outside the wall. Overnight charge was about 3 euro.

This hotel has the look and vibe of an old "Grand dame" who is still keeping herself in good shape. Everywhere you look it seems that this hotel is "frozen in time". From this persepective, the experience is quite interesting. The gleaming ornate fixtures in the bathroom,,,the klunky switch panel beside the bed,,,,the marble stair case. All still functional and kept very clean and in good shape.

Reception staff was very helpful all the time. Some staff have excellent command of English.

My double room was moderate in size for European standards.
Even though there was quite a bit of dark wood, the other decor was very neutral, so the room didn't seem dark.
Room itself was fairly sound-prood - some street noise as expected
The bed was firm. Linens were of good quality.
The WiFi was OK, however I did have to log-in and log-out for each session. 16 eu for 8 hours, but logging off after each session will stop the timer.
Since it was November, I can't commment on AirCon (or perhaps lack of...not sure)
The room got a bit warm at night,,,even in November. Some street noise through the open window......it is in the city center, so I would suggest bringing ear plugs if you're a light sleeper.

The breakfast was Ok. There was some fresh fruit and yoghurt, but not eggs. The cappucino was excellent. Breakfast is served in a formal dining room, however there is no restaurant on site. (Management told me they are trying to acquire space next door to expand into and make a restaurant)
There are 4 bikes that are free to use.

What I liked:
- Old world charm - it's like going back in time
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Feeling of security
- Cleanliness
- Location, location, location
- The free bikes

To Improve:
- A softer bed option
- Adding an on-site restaurant
- Adding a couple of non-news English TV channels

Conclucsion:
The location, staff and ambience make this hotel a worthwile hotel option for Grosseto.

Room Tip: Choose an upper floor room as it will be more quiet - the rooms facing the city gate will give a mor...
