We've just returned from a week's stay at the Etoile de Neige for christmas week 09. Booked via Crystal Ski on a half board basis. We upgraded our room to one with a balcony direct with the hotel for 10 euros extra a night, which was definately worth it.
After a small problem with flies in our initial room, 503, which was in the roof, we were moved without any issue to room 305. Both rooms overlooked the slopes which was a great view. The views the other side of the hotel cover the valley, but with low cloud most of the week, I think we had the best side.
The hotel staff are fantastic. From check in to our final day, nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The rooms are basic but comfortable. Only downside is that the lighting is quite dim in the rooms, meaning you need all lights on at most times. The bathrooms are huge, well furnished and very clean. In fact, room cleaning was very good all week. Soaps, shower gel and shower caps provided. Chargeable mini bar with water and soft drinks also in the room.
Our half board deal included a continental breakfast. Not very big and no hot food all week which us Brits do miss. That said, if anything ran out, it was always replaced. Dinner was 4 courses - a very large anti pasti table, pasta/soup course, meat then desert. All excellent throughout. We even had unlimited wine or soft drinks (including water) all week which eased the cost somewhat. Again, waiting staff were superb - thank you very much Jean Luc and Roberta!
The hotel is situated at the bottom of the village between a couple of small baby slope travellators and a chairlift which takes you into the main Pila ski system. A small yomp from the ski room in the garage to the chair lift worked as a warm up. The sheer amount of snow that had fallen made this slightly difficult. The boot room is heated but the ski room isn't and there was plenty of room for everyone's equipment. To get to anywhere in the village means a yomp up the slope to the shops/bars or a slightly longer walk along the road. There are very few shops and bars in the village so apres ski not great. Mountain restaurants all good and quite reasonably priced.
All in all a great break and would definately stay here again.
