“Alex Polizzi couldn't argue with the location but she could write her masterpiece on this hotel!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

After a fitful night's sleep on mattresses sticking firmly to their iron sprung roots, you'll not get much chance to oversleep as the maid will clatter around the corridors like an OCD percussionist; you'll be looking forward to a hearty and warming breakfast to fuel your exhilarating day up one of Mother Nature's finest achievements - the slopes of pila are wonderful- but forget it! You'll get stale croissants and hard bread rolls to lavish with slimy cold meats and sweaty cheese. You'll not get toast either but you can get a cup of coffee if you can be bothered to queue at the machine for long enough.

Whilst on the amazing pistes you can be assured the chef will be boiling baby octopuss in brackish water and preparing a dizzying array of pasta shapes with all the finesse of Alphabetti Spaghetti, for your return. Don't be too depressed about the food though as the indolent 'animacion' staff will be there to cheer you up with all of their witless baffoonery, (you will have to 'high five' them on the way in to dine). If you manage not to eviscerate them all on the spot, enjoy your slop and get a reasonably powerful shower and rest up for the next day's activity knowing that your skis are in better accommodation than you and have probably mocked you as they carried you past much better hotels.

The amiable but blissfully inept manager has however provided free wifi, with which I guiltily type this honest review- bravo!

This hotel is really only suitable for Italian speaking guests who are used to a broad standard of accommodations and shouldn't be offered by British tour operators.

A great hotel situated right on the slopes. Rooms basic but very clean. Housekeeping does a great job. Plenty of hot water, clean towels, extra pillows, shampoo, soap and fresh bed linen. The hotel has a new Italian chef and the choice and quality of food, for a 3 star hotel, was excellent. Like the previous reviewer the only down side was the extremely noisy group of young staff who sat next to us at meal times. On reflection I should have complained to the Manager, whom I'm sure could have easily sorted this out. I would recommend this hotel as a good quality 3 star hotel which is situated right on the slopes. It has a good ski storage and the local, FREE, bus stops right outside. I intend to go back in 2013 as PIla offers great ski-ing for intermediates on lovely tree lined slopes and some new "black" runs are planned for the 2013 season.

Room Tip: Choose a room that overlooks the central private park area.

I've just returned from a week staying at this hotel. The location is fantastic and you can ski straight onto the piste (not when I was there as it was later in the season but usually you can). The rooms are basic but clean and are cleaned every day. Fresh towels and bed linen every single day today. The food is good and you are given 3 choices for your evening meal, although only one dessert choice. The breakfast is continental style and plentiful. The staff in the hotel are all very pleasant and the reception staff, bar staff and cleaners extremely helpful and very very nice. There is a separate building where you can leave your skis/boots, etc.

The only downside to this hotel is (as others have pointed out) the animation staff. This is basically a group of teenagers who are employed to entertain children (albeit there are not children in the hotel all the time). This group of teenagers are very loud and very very very annoying. Nobody can have their evening meal in peace and they make a lot of noise throughout the hotel. On my last night, I was woken at 1.30am by them playing video games and cards in the reception area of the hotel. This needs to be addressed as it will put people off returning to an otherwise good hotel.

Our review is going to be just like CnJ_10 as our comments coincide almost exactly. The hotel was in a great location close to the great varied skiing slopes of Pila with good staff and plentiful tasty food. We asked for a room with a balcony as suggested by a previous reviewer, but this may not be a good idea as ours was at the back of the hotel on ground level and looked out over an untidy yard. A room in the main hotel, at the front that will have a good view of the mountains. The communal area wasn't very inviting so could be made more comfortable for guests to use for after dinner drinks etc. The animation team were an annoyance with their loud voices and superfluous activities, and with many guests feeling the same way Crystal really need to address this issue with the hotel as it could put return customers off. Ours was a late booking holiday with a discount, so it was good value for us, others paying full price may have a different option.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms at back of hotel don't have much of a view especially ground floor ones.

An odd hotel which could be so much better!

There is an animation team in the hotel which serve no useful purpose apart from annoying the vast majority of the guests! They are noiss and intrusive so the best thing would be to get rid of them!

The rest of the staff were excellent.

We booked a room with a balcony, and got a balcony on the ground floor! We asked for chairs so we could sit on the balcony but we told there were none!

Another oddity of the room was the lack of coat hooks to hang up ski clothing at the end of the day.

Room was cleaned every day sometimes done while at breakfast, excellent service!

The bar area could be so much better with the addition of comfortable seats and furnishings, and a few candles in the fire place would have added to the ambience.

Hotel is close to the slopes with only a small walk from where you can easliy access a chairlift.

Ski Areas was good for what we wanted and the trip down to Aosta by the cable car for 5 Euros each return was really good value.

Room Tip: Get a room in the main building

Great location. Excellent service, staff accommodating and very helpful. Very clean but a little tired. Food good and very plentiful, (too plentiful)! Varied daily menu. Breakfast buffet great. Rooms a bit small but comfortable and well heated. Ski in / ski out. Only complaint: animations staff who are supposedly there to entertain children! They were very noisy and their behaviour was at times totally unacceptable. After a days skiing all we wanted was to enjoy our dinner in peace. This was impossible with these youths running around, hat raising guests and throwing food. Totally unacceptable. Complaints by majority of guests to Crystal Rep was ineffective!!

We booked a couple of days before departure on 12/02/12 through the Thomson Ski website which all went smoothly. The tickets were waiting for us at Glasgow Airport as explained and check in for the early morning flight went smoothly. The transfer from Turin airport takes a couple of hours, 30mins at least of which is the winding road up from the valley floor to the resort.

The hotel is ideally situated close to the lift taking you to the ski school (excellent by the way) and it is possible to ski to/from the hotel. The room we had (406) was in a separate block requiring a short walk to/from the restaurant and reception. For the first couple of nights the room was cold although as the outside temp warmed up during the week, this did improve. Extra blankets were available and our neighbouring room was fine so it was a bit odd. The bathroom was OK with a shower, toilet, basin and bidet but no bath. There was always plenty of hot water but the rooms and bathrooms could do with modernising.

We stayed on a half board basis which means a continental breakfast - as much as you can eat including rolls, cheese, ham, salami, fruit, cereals, fresh juices and hot drinks (excellent fresh ground coffee). Lunch on the slopes could be had for around a fiver a head for a drink and sandwich/panini. Evening meals were a traditional four course Italian spread with usually 3 options for the middle two main courses. The meals were always hot, tasty and well cooked. 500ml of wine was included per table and it wasn't the usual cheap tasting stuff.

There isn't much nightlife in Pila which suited us and our 2 young kids fine. There are a couple of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance and these looked to provide good value food and drink.

The 'entertainment' provided in the hotel was minimal. There is a tv in the rooms but with no English channels except MTV. The tv in reception is tucked in a corner and is mainly watched by staff. The bar by reception is reasonable - a coffee and brandy comes to around £4. The hotel employs a team of so called entertainers who just seem to loiter around reception watching tv and saying 'enjoy your meal' as you walk into the restaurant. I'm not sure why they are employed really. The reception staff were always helpful with one lady seeming to work 24/7. If you need wireless, it is available although you have to ask for the username and password at reception and it only lasts around half an hour. The coverage does not extend to the rooms. The seating in reception and the bar is not very condusive to a relaxing evening and we spent only a short time there before heading to our room. The entertainment crew hog the bar and to be honest, deter customers from relaxing there after skiing. This will surely cost the hotel in bar takings.

The rooms are cleaned daily in the morning and towels replaced every day - excellent.

The hotel is close to the ski hire shop and access to the ski room is via a tunnel from the main hotel making it unnecessary to go outside before getting your skis each morning. If you hire skis, especially upgraded ones, take a small bike lock as mine were appropriated by some light fingered person on a couple of occasions before being returned later.

Overall, I'd stay there again as the hotel provides all the basics for a simple cheap, well located family holiday.

Room Tip: The 'four hundred' numbered rooms are by the ski store room.
