“We had a great time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2009

We just returned from 10 days vacation at Hotel Villa Daphne and we were very happy with our choice.

It's a small hotel situated in the quieter part of Giardini Naxos but well within walking distance of nice bars, cafes, restaurants, a local supermarket and the town center. The hotel is maintained to a high standard with clean rooms and a nice patio and pool area. There is a main road in front of the hotel but with the door closed you don't hear anything because of the double glazing. There is no sea view as it is obscured by buildings and trees but you can see Etna from the balcony.

There is a nice continental breakfast with boiled or scrambled eggs, breads, ham, salami, cheese, toast, pastries and jams, cereal and fruits. The coffee, teas and fruit juices provided were very pleasant, particularly the red orange juice.

The Recanati bus stop is just 100 meters from the hotel and frequent buses can take you up the winding road to Taormina with 15 minutes or to Catania within 1 hour for just a few Euros. Taormina is always busy and features a long pedestrian street with many fashionable clothing stores, cafes and restaurants. It can get very hot and humid in the early afternoon so it's recommended to stay out of the sun until the evening. Catania has a wide selection of boutiques and designer fashion stores on Corso Italia and Via Etnea.

It is just 10 minutes walk to Dal Pirata beach where mentioning the name of the hotel will
get you a sun lounger with an umbrella for around 7 Euros (a couple of Euros discount from the normal charge). The beach has a bar and is playing a selection of Italian pop music. It's very nice to swim in the sea that is sheltered from waves by the rock formations but you may want to get some beach shoes to make walking on the rocks and gravelly sand more comfortable. The beach feels quite exclusive and was never crowded.
On some days we were the only ones there until the afternoon.

Some suggestions... if at all possible try and avoid Al Italia connecting flights through Rome Fiumicino airport because not only is it total chaos but also you have a very good chance of losing your luggage for a few days (as happened to us on both the way there and the way back). If you have to endure it, make sure to leave at least an hour and a half between flights as the distance between gates may involve quite a long walk and delayed flights will result in a sprint to the gate. Also it may allow more time for the baggage to be routed successfully to your flight.

Don't take the taxi from Catania airport to Giardini Naxos, at 'the standard price' of 100 Euros it the most expensive taxi ride ever. Better to take the bus and exit at the Recanati stop next to the hotel.

Do eat at the appropriately named Ristorante Sea Sound, just a few minutes walk from the hotel, as you can enjoy a lovely open view over the sea while listening to the breaking waves and enjoying the great food.

A special mention for Rosanna and Dolores, the always super friendly and helpful reception staff. You really made us feel welcome throughout our stay, you handled every request quickly and with a smile and you were wonderful to help us with locating our missing luggage. Mille grazie!

New hôtel, from tree years, but realy professionnel !!!

The construction is very nice, the rooms offer all what we can wait for this kind offhôtel. The pool side; marvelous with a "jacusi".

All the persoons who work in this hôtel make the best for your vacation.

I'am teatcher , cook chef, and I can say that you will enjoy, the real "sicilien kitchen", with choice, and can taste sicilien wine with a friendly cost.

We spend a very beautiful time in this hôtel.

We had written in advance and had received an email confirming that a quiet room on the second floor was available; on arrriving, we were told that the only room available was on the first floor, right around from the reception (not quiet--music, near the kitchen, etc,). The rooms are fine, but quite small. One can do better for the same price.

Small hotel, central location in Recanati area, close to bus station, but calm and with no noise . Very high standard. Nice and clean rooms, nice breakfast, very good pool with possibily of drinks and snacks. 10 minutes to the beach. Staying at Villa Daphne gives a lower price of renting umbrella and chairs at one of the beaches, do not remember the name of the beach, but ask at the reception. They all speak english in the reception.
Frequent public buses to Taormina, the beaches, Catania - so do not rent a car if you want to stay in that area - it is almost impossible to park it. The hotel has a few free parkings and a garage which you have to pay for - don´t remember the price.

The hotel is very easy to reach by public transport using the etna buses that run every couple of hours from the airport in catania. The bus stop for the recanati area that the hotel is located in is only 100m from the hotel entrance and this same stop connects recanati with taormina via a 20 minute trip. The hotel itself is well presented and the rooms are very clean with good facilities and balconies for all. The young staff are very pleasant and helpful when dealing with you, except for the manager who appears to be a brooding presence around the place and is constantly looking over his teams shoulders. However, this is not a big problem as he doesnt appear to speak to you unless you take on the half board meal option. The hotel is well located to walk within 10-20 minutes to the beach and larger selection of restaurants in the main naxos resort. There are a handful of restaurants within 200m of the hotel and the reception and food are particularly great at the cafe o'neill. One final minor irritation about the hotel is that you have to ask the staff to turn the air conditioning on for you and to set the temperature whenever you retrun to the room. This appears to be a cost saving measure

I can strongly recommend the Villa Daphne. The hotel is small and new, and the interior is pleasant, bright and clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was nicely decorated and with all the usual facilities, with a good size bathroom. The pool was still closed when we visited, but looked nice. Although on a main road, the rooms are double glazed and so not noisy.

Half board was good value - the food is good Sicilian cooking, nicely served, with usually a choice of starters and fish or meat for main course, and a dessert or fruit as an alternative - the menu changes every day, the pasta sauces better than any I have tasted in so-called Italian restaurants in the UK, and no chips! The only thing missing was a salad buffet, as there is little by way of green vegetables. Breakfast was a buffet similar to most Italian hotels, with scrambled or boiled eggs available in addition to the cold food.

The location (Recanati) is the far end of Giardini Naxos and not as brash as the main town. The hotel is very close to a main bus stop - services to Taormina, airport and other locations, but be warned - if using the bus to get back to the airport, it comes from Taormina and if already full it doesn't stop: safer to get this bus from Taormina even though this takes an extra hour.

If you must stay in Giardini Naxos, you simply must stay at the Villa Daphne.
Spotlessly clean, fantastic staff, good value.
Ther is also a proper swimming pool you can dive into rather than the usual glorified paddling pool.
