We just returned from 10 days vacation at Hotel Villa Daphne and we were very happy with our choice.
It's a small hotel situated in the quieter part of Giardini Naxos but well within walking distance of nice bars, cafes, restaurants, a local supermarket and the town center. The hotel is maintained to a high standard with clean rooms and a nice patio and pool area. There is a main road in front of the hotel but with the door closed you don't hear anything because of the double glazing. There is no sea view as it is obscured by buildings and trees but you can see Etna from the balcony.
There is a nice continental breakfast with boiled or scrambled eggs, breads, ham, salami, cheese, toast, pastries and jams, cereal and fruits. The coffee, teas and fruit juices provided were very pleasant, particularly the red orange juice.
The Recanati bus stop is just 100 meters from the hotel and frequent buses can take you up the winding road to Taormina with 15 minutes or to Catania within 1 hour for just a few Euros. Taormina is always busy and features a long pedestrian street with many fashionable clothing stores, cafes and restaurants. It can get very hot and humid in the early afternoon so it's recommended to stay out of the sun until the evening. Catania has a wide selection of boutiques and designer fashion stores on Corso Italia and Via Etnea.
It is just 10 minutes walk to Dal Pirata beach where mentioning the name of the hotel will
get you a sun lounger with an umbrella for around 7 Euros (a couple of Euros discount from the normal charge). The beach has a bar and is playing a selection of Italian pop music. It's very nice to swim in the sea that is sheltered from waves by the rock formations but you may want to get some beach shoes to make walking on the rocks and gravelly sand more comfortable. The beach feels quite exclusive and was never crowded.
On some days we were the only ones there until the afternoon.
Some suggestions... if at all possible try and avoid Al Italia connecting flights through Rome Fiumicino airport because not only is it total chaos but also you have a very good chance of losing your luggage for a few days (as happened to us on both the way there and the way back). If you have to endure it, make sure to leave at least an hour and a half between flights as the distance between gates may involve quite a long walk and delayed flights will result in a sprint to the gate. Also it may allow more time for the baggage to be routed successfully to your flight.
Don't take the taxi from Catania airport to Giardini Naxos, at 'the standard price' of 100 Euros it the most expensive taxi ride ever. Better to take the bus and exit at the Recanati stop next to the hotel.
Do eat at the appropriately named Ristorante Sea Sound, just a few minutes walk from the hotel, as you can enjoy a lovely open view over the sea while listening to the breaking waves and enjoying the great food.
A special mention for Rosanna and Dolores, the always super friendly and helpful reception staff. You really made us feel welcome throughout our stay, you handled every request quickly and with a smile and you were wonderful to help us with locating our missing luggage. Mille grazie!
