“Stunning setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We travelled to Italy to get married and used Poiano as our base for the fortnight. 18 of us in total in a mixture of HB hotel rooms, s/c apartments and an age range of 4-70. Not a complaint from any of the party. The hotel is set on the hills about 2 miles out of Garda, stunning scenery and set in acres of land. Large clean pool with small shallow kids pool to the side and 2 life guards on, pool side bar with good range of reasonable priced snacks and drinks (no cash all charged to room, handy) usual activities including f,ball, tennis, volleyball, archery and a well equipped gym. S/C apartments were rustic but clean and good air con (mid 30's so needed) hire car would be useful but shuttle service is available but limited spaces. Also the less mobile would struggle but not impossible. Service in the hotel was faultless and on the whole the dinners were great, the odd night with a limited menu meant choices were not always the best but great restaurants within walking distance for a bit of variety. Garda itself is a promenade of cafes/restaurants with as many ice cream stalls as you can imagine. Running off from the promenade is a maze of cobbled streets with shops boutiques and even more ice cream stalls (may I add spotlessly clean with no litter)

Room Tip: Older apartments had air con and were closer to pool/hotel etc

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

We spent a week here in June this year. The apartments were large but dated. Only 4 rings to cook on, no microwave or oven.
The shuttle bus does not run in the afternoon so if you want to have lunch in Garda there is no bus back until 5.00pm. There are 4 good restaurants just outside the hotel, open in the evenings. Pool was shut one afternoon because it had rained earlier!? Staff fantastic and the reception staff spoke very good English. Mostly german tourists here and in Garda too. Not so good when you only have one child! No entertainment in the evenings and the bar was small and quiet. On a positive note, we still had a lovely holiday but would prefer to be closer to the town next time.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2010

My family and I briefly stayed at the Hotel Poiano Apartments following a recommendation from our tour operator that the apartments and complex were suitable for people with reduced mobility. As the hotel and apartments are situated on steep hillside overlooking Garda and Lake Garda (the complex is actually situated in Costermano despite its marketing information saying it is located in Garda, which is about 2-3 km down hill), it was apparent at registration that the complex was unsuitable for my wife's walking limitations. When entering our apartment we could see it was split level with 3 steps between the living and main bedroom/bathroom facilities. We were put in Block B (right at the top of the hill). The complex has inadequate and insufficient car parking. As a result, we were frequently required to park down the hillside near the registration building with my wife having to climb 3-4 flights of steps in the dark (at night) without any handrails to assist. After expressing our unhappiness to our tour operator representative, who acted as an intermediary with Hotel Poiano, it was suggested we transfered to another apartment block near the entrance to the complex which was on the level. When entering the proposed transfer apartment it was apparent from the unpleasant smell it was damp (the second bedroom had crumbling plaster on the lower walls as a result of rising dampness) and resembled a barn/agricultural building on the approach from the courtyard. Following another contact with our tour operator representative, during which I insisted we were transferred to another more suitable resort, we thankfully moved to a beautiful and fully accessible bungalow-style apartment in Peschiera Del Garda. Our holiday at Lake Garda then truly began.

In summary, Hotel Poiano and its apartments are beautifully situated on a quiet, countryside estate on the hillside at Costermano overlooking Garda and its lake. The Hotel appeared to be of a very good standard (we visited many times to complain during our stay) and the apartments located on the hillside have spectular views overlooking the conurbation and lake below. The apartments were generally well equipped and clean, if not a little dated. The apartment blocks near the entrance are poor in comparison and should be avoided (Blocks D and E). There is an Olympic sized swimming pool, which is perfect for adults and older children, but not for youngsters who like to play with inflatable pool toys, etc. I would recommend this complex for the fit, able and those with older children and, preferrably, their own transport. There is a free bus service to Garda, but this finished in the early evening.

We have just arrived back from Hotel Poiano staying in a "rustic" Type A apartment. We did a fly-drive with Crystal Holidays.

The apartment is basic, not luxurious. However it was of a decent size and had excellent air conditioning. There was a sofa which turned into a bed and a pull out bed in the main room and a twin-bedded bedroom and a bathroom with toilet, bidet, sink and shower.

The "Italian way" is not to provide any toilet roll, not to make up any beds and not to provide any kind of "welcome" pack of basic provisions. Daily maid service was not provided at all and the apartment wasn't cleaned by any staff during our two week visit. As Crystal guests we did not have to pay for additional linen or towel half-way through the holiday. We had to go and request it at the apartment reception and then additional linen was given to us. I then grabbed a "maid" and gave her the old linen. Apparently this is how they do things in Italy.

The accommodation is some way out of Garda town and it seemed too far to walk there and back (and we are keen walkers!) It was the uphill return that probably put us off. There are some nice restaurants within walking distance of the Poiano so we did a mixture of local ones and driving into Garda, Bardolino and Torri to eat out. We found some lovely traditional Italian trattorias serving good quality food.

The swimming pool is vast, however it was inundated with boys playing ball games (mine included!). The beds by the pool were not cushioned and were extremely uncomfortable. There are beautiful views of the lake from the pool area and it has been terraced nicely whereby you can sit under trees if you don't want to be right by the pool side. There is an animation team in residence during the summer period and it can be rather noisy. They played very loud music on occasions, so you needed to pick where to sit. The animation team finished on 31 August, so it may be quieter after this time.

We took breakfast in the hotel a few times, which was of an excellent standard. Everything you could want and more with great views overloooking the gardens and lake.

We have been disappointed with the weather, lots of downpours and cloud inbetween the hot, sunny days. We were also very surprised at how busy the lake is. There is a continuous queue around the lake from Garda going south and I have never been anywhere where there is so many people at this time of year. Hence the neutral review.

This accommodation is well suited to families with transport. The guests comprise mainly German guests with some British - Ingams and Thomas Cook offer this accommodation as well as Crystal.

  • Liked — The views and the breakfast!
  • Disliked — Lack of maid service.

We stayed in the apartments part of the hotel and, unusually for a British family, chose the half-board option. This worked well for us, but we found the variety of the breakfasts was very limited and that of the starters and puddings for dinner were also the same for all 10 days of our stay.

A car was essential, which was included as part of our Crystal Holiday package, as the town of Garda was 3 km (2 miles), 1/2 hour walk away. A good place to park is behind the Bus Station, where there was always plenty of room. Friday is market day, which is fun to see, even if bargains are few and far between. The town is picturesque and unspoilt, with an excellent ferry service across the Lake to other towns/villages. Both Malcesine and Limone are really worth seeing. The cable car up Monte Baldo is also recommended on a clear day, as the views from the summit are superb, if the weather is with you. Beware the weather can change suddenly, with thunder storms and heavy rain. Sirmoine is also worth a visit by ferry and has an interesting castle and Roman remains to see.

We went to Venice on an organised tour, which was by far the easiest option with young children. The tour included a ferry ride down to St Mark's Sq., and then a gondola trip up some of the narrower canals. There was lunch at the Omnibus Restaurent (by the Rialto Bridge), which some of our tour party thought was like "school dinners", but worked well for us. We chose a free afternoon, although other went on the organised tour around the Lagoon, and instead went up the Campanile, with lovely views of Venice, despite the haze. It is a long day for little people, but we thought it was good value and well-worth doing.

With our hire car we went to Gardaland, which is great but very busy, so arrive early, before it opens at 0930. Car parking signs are confusing, but press on past the Park Entrance and they are on the left hand side, past the bus parking. Again a clear day is required, as we suspect that many of the rides would not function in heavy rain, or thunder storms.

Advice for others: have a hire car; bring your own loo-paper, soap, shower gels, etc.; towels for swimming; and have a good road map, with road numbers marked (the map provided by Europcar was useless).

  • Liked — Good views of beautiful countryside and distant Lake
  • Disliked — Spartan appartment, lack of loo paper, poor children's club
