“A honeymoon delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2005

This hotel holds very special memories for us as the first stop on a wonderful italian honeymoon. We stayed there a number of years ago now for 10 nights, but reading the reviews I felt a couple of points were worth mentioning to people thinking of visiting the Augustus. You want to stay in the lido part of the hotel ... this used to be the Agnelli family villa and is beautiful, far more interesting than the main hotel. Also, Americans note, italian hotel rooms are notoriously small, just so you don't get your expectations up too high. The service is fabulous - the last night they prepared a table for us on the beach, champagne already on ice, and had selected a menu for us of the best of the day - all with no request, just because. It was wonderful and made us feel extremely special. The beach itself is beautiful - but beware very expensive bed charges!! The town itself is very italian chic with great boutiques and restaurants. It is a walk away though so be prepared. The Augustus Lido though is worth every step.

Hotel Augustus is a well-kept secret among vacationing Europeans. Americans are beginning to discover the charm of the property, which seems to worry the Europeans who have known about Augustus for years. I apologize in advance for broadcasting the charm of Forte dei Marmi and Augustus. We stayed during the last week in June 2005 when it was beginning to get quite hot. The air-conditioned rooms and lovely small patio facing a view of the Alps made for a beautiful and comfortable stay. It is a charming property with easy access to the beach. We stayed in the main hotel, but our friend stayed at Lido. There are three hotel buildlings all located close to one another and managed under the umbrella of Augustus. Lido is a bit more updated with larger rooms, but the main hotel building where we stayed has nice accommodations with well-appointed, but not large rooms, a small bar, full restaurant, and close proximity to the pool.

The underground tunnelled access to the beach (located closer to the Lido)means that you never have to cross over a busier street to get to the beach. Other Forte dei Marmi properties do not have that amenity. A restaurant is located beachside with bar service throughout the day. We rented bikes for two days to venture into the center of town. Otherwise, it is very walkable, but be prepared for a few blocks to get there.

We thought that the staff was welcoming and helpful with suggestions on restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed complimentary breakfast each day, but were not impressed with the evening dining at the hotel. After one night, we ventured to Forte dei Marmi for better dining experiences. We enjoyed LaBarca, the oldest restaurant in the area. The Sunday morning market is not to be missed with many designer bargains for clothing, tableware, ceramics, shoes, handbags, and the like. The prices were very reasonable and the quality of goods was excellent.

We felt that the price was well worth the value at Augustus. We heard complaints about the size of the rooms and the lack of a comfortable lounging chair. We have stayed in many smaller accommodations in France and Italy so we were not disappointed. The common areas are comfortable and spacious both in the lobby areas and in cabana-like seating areas outside the lobby.

Augustus is a special property as is the entire town of Forte dei Marmi. It is one of the only wide, fine sand beach towns in Italy.

This is simply a wonderful hotel.
Yes, it's expensive but you're paying for: exclusivity, discrete but friendly staff, amazing food, extremely well maintained surroundings, and well appointed rooms (we didn't really need two bathrooms, but it was a bonus!!)
Morning breakfast, al fresco is the perfect way to start your day. You can experience al a carte dining in the evening if so desired, but you have to eat in the hotel's beachfront restaurant - dinner with the sun setting across the water is seriously romantic. The hotel restaurant is also really good though, with a 6 course meal every night, and an extensive wine list.
I smile whenever I think about our stay in this hotel - we're definitely going back next year.

This hotel is seriously over-priced, which probably applies to others in this area as well. While the grounds and common area are nice, the room furnishings here were substandard. Food was acceptable but you must order an entire dinner in their restaurant; no ala carte. Free-standing restaurants along the coast fill up early, so make reservations.

As is the case at so many European hotels, the pool and beach "close" early, at 6 p.m. here. We were there during the brutal heat wave in June 2003, so it was more than a humorous inconvenience. (Keep this in mind when you hear others tell you how more relaxed Europeans are and how they enjoy their leisure time more than Americans do.)

Finding this hotel was somewhat of a chore. It is not on the main street along the coast; the sign for it is small and not well-marked. The location is great for access to Pisa, or even Florence, on day trips, but check out other properties in this area carefuly first before making a decision.
