We stopped in Forte Dei Marmi for a lunch on our way back home to France.
Unfortunately, we chose this place to eat, as it was right on the main square and appeared to be very nice. The decorations and atmosphere was light and breezy - conjuring typical Italian seaside resort.
However, on ordering, we had our meals (for four people) arrive individually and each twenty minutes after the other.
We made several requests to find out what was happening, as this was lunch at the height of the high season, and the place was rather empty. The service were all young and very friendly, but unable to keep us informed of where our food was due either to embarrassment or apathy. The two others tables occupied in the restaurant suffered similar problems, and we watched as they expressed their dissatisfaction on leaving.
Relaxed, we gave the place the benefit of the doubt. However, when the last two dishes came out (the same pasta dish), we discovered a very curly black hair lying in the ragu sauce. On alerting a waitress to our problem, she took both pastas back. Then, we waited another twenty minutes without any communication or offer of apology from the incredibly aloof restauranteur. Our companion who had ordered a chicken salad for fifteen euros discovered also that the chicken was processed. Our other companion suffered a speck pizza, discovering bones in the shavings. For the money we were paying for the meal, this poor quality was really not on.
Then things became worse. No communication as to the whereabouts of the pasta had been made, and we had waited nearly thirty minutes for some apology or attention as to this event. Finally, we grew tired and went to pay the bill for what we had eaten.
On going to pay the bill, the restauranteur told us that we should sit down because our food was in the kitchen. We replied that it would have been nice to have an apology, or some communication as to that fact, and that we were keen to leave. He told us that "it wasn't a problem", and that we should sit down and wait for our food.
This rudeness was incredible. He talked to us as though we were children, on top of the less than great experience we'd already had. Angry, we paid for what we had consumed and not for the pastas.
He then threatened to call the police if we refused to pay for the pasta. This was a shock, as we hadn't seen the pasta, or been told what was happening the entire time (we had Italian speakers amongst us). We put the amount we owed on the counter (minus the pasta prices) and he followed us out of the restaurant, calling the police.
Completely bewildered by the lack of class, and the arrogance of the restauranteur, we waited for the police and he told us to "get our documents ready".
Of course, the police arrived and we explained the situation to them, and they apologised for our experience of Forte Dei Marmi, and let us go on our way.
Altogether a most unpleasant experience, and one that soured our view of the Italian riviera.
What must be said is that aside from this bizarre experience, the food was terrible for the price, incredibly poorly timed (with the salad being finished before the pizza arrived and so forth) and ultimately insulting to any visitors knowledge of restaurant behaviour, courtesy and hospitality.
Do not eat here.
