When I realised that the Eurostar train service from Ferrara to Florence is only a one hour ride, compared to Ravenna to Florence's two hours ride, I had decided to stay one night in Ferrara after Ravenna. Other reasons, Ferrara has a grande Castello Estense and to me, Emilia-Romagna region's most beautiful triple-facade Duomo.
It didn't take me too long to search for a good Hotel with a Castello's view to stay. From the website pictures, it seems that the Hotel Ferrara has got better rooms than its closest competitor, the Hotel Annunziata (both are on the same square and share almost identical views). But of course, when I learn that the picture of a roof top room with an outdoor terrace leading to views of the stunning Castello, and its price only 250 euros with breakfasts included, I jumped at the opportunity!
Upon arrival in Ferrara, there was no taxis to be seen at the train station. But there was this bus number 9, which I remember reading somewhere that it would run straight to the Castello, we bought two tickets onboard and took the short 5 minutes ride. It wasn't difficult to find the Hotel Ferrara, since I knew beforehand that it was located on the North-western side of the Castello.
At 11am or so, our apartment was still being cleaned. Not a problem, just leave our luggages behind and walk opposite to visit this beautiful Renaissance castle. It surely didn't disappoint! Next, have a light lunch opposite the Duomo and bought some drinks, fruits, our apt. was ready.
Located on the third floor of a yellow-orangy building, right behind a small chapel, this apt. was huge in size - super large sitting area, two outdoor terraces, working kitchen with all necessary pots and pans, plates and cookery, microwave oven, bathroom with shower, huge and comfy bed, long dinning table for 8 or 10, and two 3 seater leather sofa seats.
Its hall is too big, making the TV looked small. It does, however, come with some English channels. The whole apt. is extremely spacious (can even accommodate 5 or 6 persons), big and airy, thanks to the cleverly built-in 6 skylights (yes, we counted them) - signs of good architectural design is rather obvious here. Read somewhere that the Hotel's owner is indeed an established architect, and we could see how his good designs were being put to use in this apartment.
Location wise, this hotel is really ideally located. We enjoyed looking at the Castello before going to bed and after waking up, it was simply sublime! Plus, the hotel is close to the Duomo and the Old town area. There were also a few restaurants nearby. A big plus was being able to order pizza from Davide of Reception and having it delivered to us for only 10 euros a pizza - what a service on a cold winter's night!
Breakfasts at its Big Night restaurant was fine, too, with quite a good range of foods to choose from. This was one of the better breakfasts we had had during the whole trip, losing out only to the Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan, which is a 5 stars Hotel.
Our little glitches here are - internet was charged at 12 euros per day, a little expensive as most 3-4 stars hotel on this trip either charged 5 euros a day or made it F.O.C. for their guests. Plus, its receptionist lady didn't even smile once throughout our short stay. Maybe she should smile more often, making guests feel more welcomed?
Overall, this hotel is not a cheap option in Ferrara. There are lots of cheaper options nearby. However, we strongly felt that its price-quality ratio is rather high here. Thus, if you are going for close to 5 stars quality in Ferrara, and didn't want to pay thru your nose, stay here.
