“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

The hotel is very average. The whole place needs refurbishment as its decor is drab and carpets threadbare and stained. Although the rooms are clean and warm it is disappointing for the price we paid. We had booked half board but the food was really not up to the standards that we expect on a skiing holiday. Breakfast especially was poor, tinned fruit peaches or pineapple, 3 cereals and yoghurt, with a poor selection of bread and pastries. Dinner was particularly dull, hot and cold buffet, which was almost the same every night. The beds are big but very hard and after skiing it was difficult to sleep comfortably.

On the up side the rooms had plenty of wardrobe space. We had a lovely view, we were close to the town centre and the bus stop was outside the hotel.

The staff are helpful and friendly but this doesn't compensate for the fact it is a downmarket hotel in a glamorous resort. No jaccuzzi, no steam room, no spa, no afternoon tea and coffees with cakes for apres ski, so we didn't want to spend any time in the hotel if we could help it.

Pay extra and go to another hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you face the front of the hotel and have a view. If offered, don't take room 102

This was our first visit to Cortina and we used Inghams to book the holiday. It was the first season for Inghams in this resort. We picked this hotel both for its central location and the price. It had a good location right in the town with the ski bus stop outside the hotel. The tour reps were unaware if the hotel had a ski store or not - it did have a very small one - but in general info from them was scarce. This may be because every other passenger on the transfer bus were staying in their other hotel, the Hotel Parc Victoria. (Inghams had created a special deal for the hotel, generous bar tabs, free wine, all English staff etc to attract groups of British tourists and were concentrating on developing that.)

The Majoni was quite expensive but it was mid-range priced for Cortina - we thought this was perhaps because it is a fairly prestigious resort. Having stayed in some really nice Austrian ski hotels for similar prices we assumed that we would get a pretty good hotel, but it is sadly in need of refurbishment and upgrading. The room we were given on the first night,102, was on the ground floor. It was dismal, tiny and the balcony views we had paid extra for, looked over the rear car park. The noise from the kitchen fan not only irritated us as we constantly turned over trying to get comfortable on the very hard bed, but it also drew in cooking smells into the room. The manager found us another room which was considerably better, slightly larger and with a fantastic view from the balcony on the first floor. There were also 3 double wardrobes which was great. It is clean and serviced regularly. Beds are large and if a firm mattress is preferred then you will certainly like these - not for us though.

The food is decidedly average. It is essentially a hot and cold buffet every night. The first night it was dried up and overcooked and our hearts sank at the thought of this for the week. Buffet quality did improve a little but was nothing special to look forward to. Breakfast was very limited, tinned fruit, yoghurt and cereal, bread rolls or tasteless white bread for toast.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful and did try very hard to ensure that we were attended to at all times.

We had very heavy snow when we were due to leave and Inghams asked us to join the other guests at the Parc Victoria hotel to wait for the transfers. We had our best evening meal of the week there - the downside to this hotel is that because of the Inghams offers it had attracted a large group of inconsiderate men who enjoyed themselves - very loudly for 10 hours non stop while we waited - so being in a hotel with large groups like this would not have suited our holiday requirements.

Skiing is nice in Cortina with great views and fabulous snow. One of the gondolas looked like a rusty old biscuit tin and after queuing for nearly 40 minutes we were squashed in with 50 others - we avoided the Tofana gondola station after that.

It is important that you find out as much as possible right at the beginning of the holiday to get the best from skiing and eating. Due to our lack of local knowledge we didn't really get around as much as we could have done. Others who bought ski instruction had learned from the locals of hidden gems as well as where best to go for lunch. Many of the on piste restaurants were again, decidedly average so coming off the slopes about 3pm we then found all restaurants we tried were closed in Cortina until 7 pm.

We did have a good time skiing and we went ice skating which was fun, but with the price we paid for the hotel we don't feel overall it was good value. We wouldn't recommend the Majoni and won't go to Cortina again.

We stayed 7 nights at the Majoni with friends who had stayed there in the past. The hotel is well located and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Two negatives would be the at best average food and access to the internet.

The food was not up to what I would consider standard Italian fare, which was unfortunate as we had a half board reservation and dinners in particular were a disappointment. Access to the internet (all wi-fi) was nothing short of poor and there seemed to be almost no interest in resolving the lack of connectivity other than to blame the local provider.

The price was right so that helped mitigate the rating, however I would not make this my fist choice in Cortina if I was to return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the main street - most rooms do face in that direction so the odds are in your...

We recently spent 6 days at the hotel Majoni in Cortina. Negatives would include the rooms are somewhat sparse and only two English language TV stations (BBC news and CNN). However there are numerous comfortable armchairs in the lobby so the room furniture is not really a problem. Bathroom facilities are fine.

The hotel has a great location in the center of Cortina. They have free parking in an area where parking is a problem. The breakfasts are good - much better than we had in an expensive four start (like the Majoni) hotel in Venice after our stay in Cortina. We would recommend taking a half board package. The price is very reasonable. Dinner is served buffett style and there is a wide variety of dishes to choose from. The food is excellent and varies from day to day.

If you have any doubt about the value the hotel provides, step across the street to the Grand hotel (five star), look at their prices for both rooms and food. By American standards for Italian style food the prices are very high.

Front desk and restaurant service were excellent at the hotel Majoni. All in all, a good deal in a beautiful resort.
All in all, a . . P

The service at Hotel Majoni for our 2011Feb ski trip was excellent. We were very pleased with our well appointed, good size clean room with private bath. Hotel Majoni is within a 1 minute walk to the ski bus stop on the same street, and within walking distance to 10 mins to main shopping. View of Cortina from room balcony was spectacular. Breakfast and dinner was high lighted with varied food selection and great cappacino/expresso.
Incredible value at Hotel Majoni.

I am rarely moved to write a review as I stay in so many hotels during the year and I take the rough with the smooth. I do try to avoid rough and prefer the smooth- the more stars the better. So yes, this author is picky, has high standards and can be a demanding hotel diva.

The Majoni is a three star property and although I did stay in quite a modest single room during my skiing trip, I want to say how perfect it was in so many ways.

The staff, starting with Vincenzo and his colleagues on the front desk, right through to the wonderful people who served at the amazing breakfast and dinner buffets, and the bar man of course (smile more!).

Staff make the difference in a hotel like this, (well, the amazing food as well) and nothing was too much trouble for them. Vincenzo is a gem. He even found us our fantastic ski instructor Lorenzo, and he had quite a specific brief to work with! Well done Hotel Majoni. You are in my top 10 of favourite hotels worldwide, up there with the Mandarin in Hong Kong, the Poseidon in Positano and the Bay in Cape Town.

The hotel Majoni was fantastic in all areas especially the food. I have never seen as much choice of food as was served by this wonderful hotel. The rooms are spacious and the view in the morning when you open the curtains was amazing. We were skiing as family for a week and we were grateful for all the help and information given to us by the staff. They were really pleasant and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. It was our second visit to Cortina having had a summer walking holiday in july, we stayed just along the road at the Victoria. The hotel Majoni in my opinion was far better although the Victoria is good, the food in the Majoni was a delight to come home to after a long hard days skiiing. Thanks to all the staff and we will return as soon as possible *****
