“Charming hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2012

This is a lovely hotel in a fantastic position right in the middle of Cortina amid the lovely tearooms and chic boutiques. It is one of the oldest hotels in Cortina and so has a lot of character which makes the hotel very unusual and charming. The downside is that you have to be prepared for some of the less convenient aspects of an older hotel. For e.g. the ceiling in the bathroom of our room was very low and so my husband had to duck to get showered. Also some aspects of maintenance are more of an issue than in a newer hotel; our bath leaked quite badly on the first day. The staff very cheerfully got someone in to fix it but this took a couple of days. It did not affect our enjoyment of this lovely hotel at all but I can imagine for some visitors this would have been more of an issue.
As a ski resort, this is the most picturesque place we have ever stayed to ski by a long way. However it is certainly not a ski-in, ski-out resort. In fact, you need to be fairly fit to lug your skis up to the closest lift or to hop on one of the buses to go to another part of the Dolomiti Superski region which is vast and stunningly beautiful. The buses that take you to the wider ski area fall into different areas so sometimes you have to change buses and the timetables are not necessarily optimally organised. It would be an advantage to bring or hire your own car for maximum flexibility.
The food in the restaurant is beautifully presented by excellent waiting staff, and it is of a very high standard, although it might be a little fussy for some tastes.
There is a bar area with a pianist and the tearoom serves tea with chocolates outside if the weather is nice - it is one floor up and a perfect place to watch the world go by.
They charge for use of the internet which is always annoying in an expensive hotel but a minor niggle overall.
All in all a lovely and unique hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the church on a high floor. This is where the photos of the resort used...

Stayed here as part of an Insight Tour. Hotel is charming, spotless, and our room was lovely. Front desk staff was pleasant......but dining staff turned off the lights at 10.05 when breakfast ended at 10! That evening when coffee was requested after dinner guests were told "dinner finished"!! Food was adequate.

one important thing if you are planning to stay in Cortina. Cortina is a very expensive city and it's really difficult to find a good value for your money.
we checked 5 different hotels in the same price range and Ancora's room was the nicest we saw. generally speaking it seems that this city has lost some of it's glory.
my advise to you- don't stay in Cortina d'Ampezzo if you don't have to. it's an old city with over priced hotels.
back to Hotel Ancora.
the location is very good- right in the center of the town.
breakfast was reasonable but we would have expect more than that for the 120 Euro we paid.
the rolls were so hard that I was sincerely worried about my teeth, though the Latte Macchiato I received was quite good. (had to ask to replace the first cup after the filled the whole cup with foam instead of milk- hello?! this is Latte Maciato we are dealing with, not Extra foam Cappuccino...)
we didn't try their dinner because it was too expensive for us- 50 Euro per person, so they recommended another restaurant which was eventually a huge disappointment- "Fontejel" which was pretentious and extremely over priced!
it seems that due to the prices (high) the average age of the people in that hotel is over 60.
one good thing I can say is that the staff was quite friendly.

We stayed here for 2 nights, September 2 & 3, 2011 as the included hotel on our tour of northern Italy and about the only positive thing we can say is that it has a great location. We agree with a prior review about the domed serving dishes being all flourish and not great food and that this hotel is "resting on its laurels" as the oldest hotel in Cortina. Also we agree that the lighting was poor. The following is taken from a letter we wrote to the tour operator and obviously we were not pleased with this accommodation!

If the Hotel Ancora is the best Cortina has to offer we cannot imagine how the other hotels would be. Our room was extremely small with no room for suitcases except on the floor, making it difficult for us to move around. The two wardrobes were constructed of plywood with stenciled decorations and “wrapping paper” to line the shelves. There was a VERY LOUD party which continued late in the evening. We had had a very long day coming all the way from Baveno and wanted to retire which was difficult with the VERY LOUD amplified music and vibrations. We finally called the desk at 11:30pm to complain and fortunately the party ended shortly thereafter. Our window overlooked the dumpsters behind the hotel and the dumping of empty bottles continued several times. Our included dinner was served so quickly that it gave new meaning to “fast food” - barely had we finished one course when our plates were whisked off the table and dessert was served at the same time the entrée plate was removed. In the morning we put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on our door while we went to breakfast. We returned to find the staff in the process of cleaning the room! Since the “Do Not Disturb” sign was written in several languages we were aghast that our request for privacy had not been honored.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011

We stayed here as part of a group trip so the cost was already included, but it appeared to be very expensive based on the prices shown on the back of the door. Our room was nicely furnished, but was seriously lacking in decent lighting. The public rooms were very nice, with beautiful oriental rugs on the floors. The dining room was more into pretense than quality - the routine where they bring out the dishes covered by domed metal plates and then remove them at the same time ceremoniously - this flourish is not too helpful when the supposedly fresh caught trout is seriously over-cooked. Then at breakfast, when we ordered caffe' latte, we were served a pot of instant coffee along with the milk - not what you expect in Italy at a four star hotel - we had to order double espressos and then add milk. Charging for WIFI was a bit of nickling and diming in a hotel of this quality - I went down the street to an internet cafe to use my iphone for free. I think this hotel is "resting on its laurels" as the oldest hotel in Cortina, but I think there are much better choices in town on a price/value basis

This hotel is located right in the heart of Cortina D'Ampezzo, and you couldn't ask for a better location. It's not a large hotel, but it had a cozy atmosphere, in keeping with being in the heart of the Dolomites. I found it charming, and I was very satisfied with the size of my room. It got cold at night, and I appreciated the thick blankets they provided. I was on a group tour of Italy, and I found the Hotel Ancora to be one of the most memorable hotels that we stayed at. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
