We booked a night here at Pomedes as a "treat" for our package holiday "chalet night off".
It took two attempts over a couple of weeks to rouse a response to make the booking...perhaps they were busy?
We were warned by some people we met who had been that it may be cold. Apparently when the owner is at home, the staff aren't allowed the heating on. When the owner goes away, they crank it right up!!
The location is superb of course, can't fault it. However, unfortunately everything else was not so great. The welcome was nice by the young staff, although our arrival seemed to "throw" them a little and they seemed surprised. There is no ski/boot room. We were told to leave our skis outside (eeek - I had a pair stolen from a mountain restaurant last year) and told to put our boots by the fire...fair enough, but pity any other poor residents!
We were shown to our room in the basement, as soon as we opened the door to go downstairs the temperature drop hit! It was pretty chilly in the corridor, but the room was worse. We could see our breath! The thermostat was turned to zero! Did they not believe we were coming?? The young lady turned it up and assured us that we would soon be warm and dinner would be served at 7. After the 2 radiators being on all night it was only 14C by the morning.
We arrived for dinner at 7, had a drink...waited for something to happen...nothing...the family were watching TV together in another room. Ordered a second drink to fill in time and looked hopeful and hungry. No comment from the staff, just back to the TV!
Eventually we were seated (we were the only overnight guests). The homemade pasta we had to start was amazing. Sadly main course was not so great, a plain fried turkey breast steak / small portion of chewy, not tasty Goulash, served with fried cubed potatoes. Really unusual in a traditional Italian place to get carbs for your starter and then more for your main. Dessert was tired looking left over cakes from the daytime trade...we shivered off to bed, (slept fully clothed, couldn't bear to have a shower!) with positive thoughts about breakfast...only to be disappointed.
Coffee, those dried toast things that come in packs of two, jam...and THAT'S IT!!! No ham, cheese, eggs...the things that come as standard continental breakfast... not even fresh bread.
Not a good start to a full day on the slopes.
And the worse bit...the price. The advertised price on the website was 65 euro per person per night for dinner bed and breakfast. I did note that this was for 2011/12 season and that it hadn't been updated. When I emailed to make the booking I asked for a price. The question was ignored. I didn't pursue it, as it had been bad enough just getting a reply about the reservation. We were shocked to get the bill stating that our half board was 80 euro each!!! My mistake for not pressing for a price...I was prepared for say 10% for inflation, but was shocked at this!
Last year I stayed in 6 different rifugios in this area of the Dolomites. All were priced between 55 -65 euro pppn for a double ensuite room. They were all very warm and the standard of food was far superior to Pomades. Message me if you want the details. On the positive, the place was very clean, the decor in the bedroom charming (if you can get over the cold) and location great...but won't be going back.
