“Venice & Union Lido”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2009

I'm an old romantic at heart. I love my wife and I spend each year looking to romance her in new and interesting ways. One year I wrote her a novel which was published, another year I married her which seemed to be the icing on the cake until I took her to Venice.

The city is beautiful, it has to be noted that the experience is welcomed over and over. I have travelled to a few places over in the states and I have visited a few places in Canada (Lake Louise is definitely worth a look) but Venice is a place I can return to year after year.

We enjoy the simple relaxed pace of life and the city at night is just magical. We normally book a hotel in Venice so we dont have to travel far but last year we took a week's break in June when the weather can be idyllic, sometimes a little too hot or you can just expect rain. It's a tricky place to plan for but we went mid June and each day was just as nice as the last.

We had talked to some friends with have a larger family, 3 children (we have 1 and 1 is enough) and they recommended we stay at a holiday parc which would offer us both the time in Venice we enjoy and the amenities of a holiday parc with swimming pools, private beach and restaurants. They told us about Union Lido, one of a few holiday parcs on the Adriatic Peninsular so we checked on the website and the site looked wonderful, so clean and nestled in what looked like a nature reserve. We thought about it and decided ok.

Our friends told us to shop around for the best deals and to look at the holiday companies that operate on Union LIdo. As an avid Trip Advisor reader I naturally came here first looking to read up on company reviews and I found one for a company called Bolero Holidays. I was mesmerised with the article, so detailed and humourous I had to check them out.

They have a decent website, information is clear and concise, the photos match up with the Union Lido photos so I could trust what I was looking at was the site. They do 3 types of accommodation, a tent (Not for us), caravan, (Almost there) and a mobile home with inbuilt air-conditioning (A winner) so we called them up to discuss our requirements.

Easy! We decide on the flights we like and they will shift accommodation around to meet us! Perfect! and they even helped transfer us from the airport to the site. So we stayed with Bolero (www.boleroholidays.co.uk) and enjoyed a wonderful site (www.unionlido.com) and once again enjoyed the splendor of Venice.

We went Tuesday to Friday, flew with Ryanair from Stansted to Treviso Airport. Bolero arranged a taxi with a company they knew. The journey from the airport to the site was approx 1 hour.

We bought day trip tickets from Union Lido and used the bus down to Punta Sabbioni (water port) and then jumped straight on a ferry across to Venice! The total journey time was about 45 minutes but I got some shots of the crossing and I will upload a still from it.

A lovely holiday and we have booked to go again this year.

Fab site. Booked with Thomson Alfresco and stayed in Vivaldi Mobile Home, by what we saw, best uk tour operator to go with. Reps where on site from 9am-9pm, excellent service. Mobile home needed a bit of a tidy up, suppose as getting towards end of season! Site huge, never done so much wallking !!! Located at far end of site near Aqua Park Laguna, pools fab, whole site spotless. Toilets and shower blocks immaculate. 2x supermarkets stocking everything you would need, price no different fromj those off-site. Beach beautiful although can get busy during peak times. Eateries very good, good service, most serving similar dishes, would reccomend Rosticeria serving hot chicken n chips to take away, really lovely, kids loved this.
Only bad points- mosquitos - cant be avoided ! we spend a fortune of repellents, still got bitten.
Expensive - but i think due to euro weakness, everywhere suffering.
Noisy teenagers coming back after a night out at the Cavana bar. there is a 11pm silence however, this bar/club is open til 2am and a stones through away from mobile homes so you do get them walking past at all hours.
All in all a lovely holiday.

“Fantastic Site”

We stayed in one of the site's "Bungalow Lidos". On arrival, I was amazed at the condition it was left by the cleaners - spotless! Cleaner than any hotel room I've ever used. Cleanliness is a big thing with this site ,all facilities are very, very clean. There are two supermarkets on site, both are shining and well stocked. We made all our grocery purchases on site so I cannot compare prices to local supermarkets but I didn't find any products much more expensive than an Irish mid size supermarket.

The bungalows are very well placed. The main pool complex was about 150 metres from our complex and the beach was directly in front of this complex. One of the supermarkets was just across the road so popping over for milk etc was very handy. All facilites are very close to the bungalows.

There are quite a few places to eat on site. The rotisserie is very close to the bungalows and serves delicious chicken and chips at very keen prices. Of the restaurants proper, our favourite was the Osteria Ca rustica. For atmosphere, this left all the other eateries on site behind. However, it must be said that mosquitoes were more of a nuisance here than at the other restaurants.

The facilities on this site are second to none. We found the staff very helpful. Contrary to some reviews, English is very widely spoken although the vast majority of guests were German during our stay.

I think it was the best site we've been on for the following reasons;
Cleanliness -all facilities are incredibly clean.
Eating - I think there are 10 cafe / restaurants to choose from.
Swimming Facilities- 5 minute walk to the beach and two minutes to the pool complex (lifeguards very prominent on the beach and they are very professional).
General facilities - there are a wide range of things to do. The on site "village" has a small number of clothes shops etc and the site organises craft markets on site each week. For the first time on holiday, we really did not need a rental car as we left the site only twice over a two week period.
Weather - not the responsibility of the site but it was glorious (29 - 31 degrees celsius) for our two weeks.
Atmosphere - surprisingly , there are a huge number of "real" campers at Union Lido - people who own their own caravans and tents and bring them on site, I think these people really add to a site.
Beach - apart from swimming, it cannot be emphasised the bonus of having a beach so close , especially when you have three childeren all under the age of 9.
Diversity - on last year's holiday to southern France, there seemd to be more Kilkenny / Cork / Dublin GAA jersies on site than at home in Ireland. At Union Lido, it was refreshing to hear German, Danish, Swedish and a host of other languages spoken much more than English.

Now the downside. Although Union Lido is the best site we've visited, I don't think it was our favourite. It has grown over the years and seems to be a very "corporate" sort of place. Yes, it is very well organised, but I don't really need all the staff wearing badges that show what language they speak fluently. We usually holiday in France and normally communicate in broken English/ broken French. No such barriers at Union Lido!.The company seems to be very progressive and part of this seems to be their transformation from a campsite to a holiday site. I couldn't hep but think that D****yland is what they aim to be sometime in the future - each time I saw the garish staff uniforms at the geletaria, this thought returned to me.
I was also disappointed that the use of bicycles is limited to "perimeter" routes. You cannot cycle at will throughout the entire campsite and this rule is strictly enforced by staff.
Entertainment at night could have been a little bit better for adults. This sound's corny but we always enjoy having a band or group playing at an outdoor bar / theatre where the adults can sit and have a drink while the kids run around nearby (hats off to Palmyre Loisirs, Palmyre and Camping Cypsela, Pals on this one!). This did not happen at Union Lido. There was music on some nights but the atmosphere was not very relaxed - usually the crowd had to stand.
Although we really enjoyed staying in the bungalow, we were not supplied with a barbecue and so we missed out on one crucial bit of our usual campsite holiday. Also, at night no bungalow residents seemed to stay outside reading and sipping wine so after 9.00pm there was absolute silence in our section. A little more atmoshere would have been nice.

Overall, we enjoyed an excellent holiday and highly recommend Union Lido. We have visited a lot of sites, mainly in France but also in Italy and Spain and Union Lido is really out on it's own in terms of cleanliness, efficiency and facilities.
