“A lovely old building, centrally located”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

The hotel is a grand building in the main street of the old town of Castellina. Vehicle access is limited; you need to park just outside the restricted area to pick up a permit from reception which entitles you to drive into the street at certain times to load and unload. There is private parking around the back which you will be directed to; there are a lot of steps up to the hotel from this!

Breakfast was the best we had on this trip, with a wide selection of bread, cakes, cold meat, cheese, fresh fruit and yogurt.

The spa is free to use, and towels are provided without charge. It was nice to have it to ourselves on a wet day!

Rooms at the back have rural views although apparently these are not available when booking through Booking.com because they are all superior rooms. Therefore despite expressing a preference for a rural view we had been allocated a front street view; however, they did manage to find us a smaller standard room at the rear with a partial rural view. To be fair, the front room was huge and included a sofa; however it was rather dark because of the low windows, and as we were staying for three nights we particularly wanted a rural outlook.

Room Tip: Rooms with rural views are at the rear; these are superior rooms and not available when booking via...

The location is amazing. Beautiful views out the back, THE BEST pizza place across the cobbled street. (Seriously, we would return just for this pizza which became the standard by which we judge all others.) The rooms were charming and "Tuscan" beautiful. Great modern bathroom, too. The spa wasn't there when we went (June 2005), but we have every intention of returning. I remember breakfast being lovely, and reading in the back versnda overlooking the fields, with a glass if wine. We loved the town and we were very very happy with this hotel

My wife and I have visited Castellina it three times now and all three times we have stayed at the Palazzo Squarcialupi. This hotel is located right in the center of the very quaint town and the service is superior the complimentary breakfast in the morning is terrific, the staff is very helpful and rooms are very clean. The entire staff is very attentive to anything that you would like them to do or help you with any questions you have. This hotel is a real gem!

We stayed in the self contained unit "Dependance", it was well appointed...good heating and a amazing view of the Chianti hills from the bedroom. The apartment has country charm and is good value for money.
The true stand out quality is the people who own and run the Hotel Squacialupi. While we were in Castillina it snowed quite heavy for several days...and our car was stuck in snow!!! They dug the car out of the snow and made sure it was safe for us to drive the mountain...asking nothing in return!!
Irene the manager is the most helpful person, she really was a angel and made us feel welcome.
Plazzo Squarcialupi is a good exapmle of counrty hospitality and Chianti charm.

This was a wonderful place to stay while in Tuscany. Castellina in Chianti is a very cute town and I loved staying right in the town. It was so convenient to be able to walk to dinner at the cute restaurants in Castellina.
Our room was large and comfortable. We had an amazing view (see photo). The room was quiet and had a sitting area with sofa. There was a shower and bidette the room - no bathtub. My only criticism would be that we had no wifi service in the room, but there was wifi right down the hall, in the breakfast room and lounge.
The breakfast was good. If you want a fancy cup of coffee, ask the person who is taking care of the breakfast - she will go get a cup of cappuccino from the coffee bar on the first floor for you.
The coffee room and bar on the first floor offers the opportunity to have a drink, which you should take out onto the balcony to enjoy the views.
There is a spa on the first floor with jetted tubs, saunas and relaxation beds. It was very nice and relaxing - find an hour or two to treat yourself to some relaxation before dinner.
The check-in was easy. Finding the parking is a little confusing - so just send someone in your group in to get the directions, and then it's pretty clear what you will need to do.
Again, the location of this hotel is the biggest plus. I would highly recommend staying here. This hotel is a little more pricey than I usually pay, but I would probably splurge on it if I travel to this area again - it's worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the vineyards, not one on the street.

We only had two nights in Tuscany...so I had to make it count. Needless to say I was nervous about selecting the right place to stay. I booked Squarcialupi based on the pictures and price. I don't know if I could have picked a better place to stay....

What I really liked about it was the nice balance between staying in a charming Tuscan town where there was plenty going on and still feeling like we were miles away in the countryside. It was a little difficult to find but we figured it out. We followed our GPS which tells you to go up a street that looks like you cannot drive on. Park at the bottom, pay the meter, and walk up the street to check in. They will give you instructions for where to park and what to do...easy.

The staff was impressive. They will help you with anything you want and will be friendly about it. The hotel itself is very unique and has a wonderful ambiance about it. Our room was huge! It felt very rustic, but not old. We were streetside so we didn't have the view out our window, but we had the smell of pizza from the awesome shop across the street...yum!!! The bathroom was also quite roomy and everything was very clean.

Positives: Sitting on the terrace with a bottle of wine, with that view, was sooooo relaxing. A nice change a pace after visiting the big, crowded cities. The spa was an amazing surprise. Castellina is a super cute town with a handful of great places to eat and hang out.

Negatives: Writing this review makes me wish I was there right now!

Message me if you have any questions. I'm jealous of anyone who is going!

I have stayed at the Hotel Squacialupi several times over the past few years and there is a definite reason I keep going back - the hotel is gorgeous, only 17 rooms, which makes you feel a bit special. The public rooms are grand and impressive with frescoes on the walls, just a place for a drink before dinner. The outdoor terrace overlooks the most beautiful Tuscan scene of vineyards and the hotel's beautiful garden. Our rooms have always been quite large and we love the rooms overlooking the main pedestrian street where you can see the hustle and bustle of town life. The town is small and quiet but still has some lovely restaurants and some good shopping. The women who run the hotel can't do enough for you. I love this hotel and will definitely be visiting again.
