“OUR FAVORITE PLACE IN TUSCANY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We spent 2 wonderful weeks at Palazzo Squarcialupi in September. This is our 4th or 5th stay and it only gets better each time. We already have it reserved for next fall.. Our room overlooked the vineyards and the pool at the rear of the property. It was a treat every morning to open our shutters to the beautiful, peaceful view. The room was large and spacious, but also traditionally Tuscan. The breakfast buffet is delicious with a wide selection of items. We even had brealfast in our room twice and if was served beautifully. The breakfast room is beautiful and a lovely place to start the day. The entire staff is a pleasure to deal with, helpful and accommodating and friendly. There are many exceptionally good restaurants , all within walking distance, as well as others within a short driving distance. The surrounding towns and villages are all worth visiting. We enjoyed Monteriggioni, Greve, Montefioralle, Panzano, etc. etc. The pool is a real plus for relaxing before or after touring the area. The driving from town to town on Rte. 222 is breathtaking, one stunning hillside after another. This is our perfect vacation retreat for visit the wonderful Chianti region of Tuscany.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of regularly staying at the Palazzo Squarcialupi in charming Castellina, over almost 18 years. Located between Florence, Siena and Arezzo, and with other small towns nearby, it is a comfortable base for exploring Tuscany. As Australians we love the vast and enchanting vistas of the Chianti landscape in which historically ancient population centres still thrive, with evident continuing respect for both culture and nature. But our great pleasure begins and ends with the warm and genuine hospitality we enjoy at Palazzo Squarcialupi . The welcoming, friendly and always helpful owner Monica and her cheerful staff show concern to ensure our happiness at all times. The rooms and appointments throughout the Palazzo are admirable and not gaudy. The views over the valleys and hills of Chianti are extraordinarily wonderful. Breakfasts are a great start to each day. The pool is perfect. We love it all and we can't wait to come back again soon !

We had a great time at the Palazzo Squarcialupi last October staying in the apartment next door. This year we decided to start our Tuscan trip by returning to the PS and this time we booked a Standard Superior Room in the main hotel building. We arrived quite late so when we opened the shutters on our first morning we were astounded by the view over the valley to the mountains beyond. It was absolutely stunning with clouds of mist slowly melting away. The room (101 I think) was very spacious and perfect for our needs as well as being just a few steps away from the Breakfast Room and Lounge. Another bonus for my wife and I was being able to use the spa in the basement after a days sightseeing. All in all we had another great stay in the PS and would love to return for a third time when the pool is still open!!

We recently spent one week at Palazzo Squarcialupi, and could not have been more pleased! The hotel is in Castellina-in-Chianti, a great hilltop town to use as a base to explore Chianti. The hotel is in a converted Palace. The owners also own an excellent Winery, La Castellina, and the winery's wine shop (enoteca) is next door, with the wineries aging cellars underneath the enoteca. We stayed in Room # 101, a beautiful king-bed room just over their bar's outdoor terrace, with spectacular views of the vineyard-covered valley. The hotel is also right inside the town's pedestrian-only zone, so the streets are filled with restaurants, shops, fruit stands, and winery enoteca's to make browsing a treat. Parking is available for guests, a short walk away, but the pedestrian-only zone makes it so you cannot drive up to the front and drop off your bags. But, you can do so at the edge of the zone, a short walk to the hotel. There are plenty of great restaurants in town, all within an easy walk. The hotel offers an included breakfast buffet. The staff all speak English, and are very pleasant and helpful. We understand that the hotel plans to move the enoteca to an upstairs floor, and convert its street-level location to a restaurant -- they thought in two years. Overall, this is a great hotel, and a great place to stay!

Room Tip: For our next visit, we like Room #'s 101, 102, or 103.

My husband and I like to " do something different" every year and so the idea of returning to the same place for a holiday definitely wasn't in our plans. But our first trip to the PS with close friends was not to be our last! We love the unspoilt area and the oasis of tranquility that lies inside the hotel. Nothing is too much trouble for the helpful staff, and the place is immaculate. Breakfasts are simple but there's more than enough to eat, including home made cake, and the quaintness of the dining room makes up for the lack of bells and whistles.
The swimming pool is secluded, with views extending over unspoilt countryside. Castellina is crammed with eateries and the quality of the food and drink on offer is exceptional.
We've been to the PStwice in the last three years and we intend to visit again soon. Thank you Anne and Gerald for introducing us to Tuscany and the PS :)

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and opt for a room with a view.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in room 101. Although it wasn't as big as the next room, but bigger than most standard hotels, we equally had a beautiful view of the countryside along with the pool. The decor feels that you are typically living in the country. I enjoyed sitting by the pool but didn't get a chance to swim as it was quite chilly.

This hotel is a perfect base for short drive (15-20 min) to Sienna, 40 mins to San Gimignano and less than an hour to Florence. The hotel is situated right in the heart of Castellina in Chianti. You are seconds to restaurants, shops, and local services. There is a bigger supermarket only a 5 min walk away and the best pizza we tried is directly opposite the hotel's entrance.

Free parking is available for guests situated at the back. When arriving by car, you are able to drop off your luggage in front of the hotel during certain a certain timeframe, and then you'll be given instructions on how to enter the private carpark.

The only complaint I would have is the breakfast wasn't very exciting. Bread rolls were kinda tough and the prosciutto hams smelt quite bad that it was off putting to eat.
The other issue we had was the shower door was difficult to open and close.

However, if you are looking for a place to stay in Castellina, this should be the way to go.

Room Tip: Pay a little bit more and get a room overlooking the countryside. You wouldn't want to face the...

We stayed in Squarcialupi for 2 nights and were apprehensive about the location and the hotel set up and services. But it was a surprise - comfortable room and bathroom, good breakfast spread and great view from the terraces of the hotel. The location is also great especially if you want to indulge under the tuscan sun and check out the vineyards around chianti, san gimigniano and sienna. The front office staff was also helpful in organising a car for us at the last moment for us to travel around.

Room Tip: we stayed in a room with a window too high - we could not look out but the window opened for fresh a...
