“Fantastic Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

Just want to echo what Bodger S has said below about the La Medusa. A massive plus one to what he has said. It is a perfect base to explore what the Amalfi coast has to offer. We too hired a car and travelled about the coast and to Pompeii. All the staff are friendly and eager to please, the rooms are comfortable with excellent air con. We spent some lovely days relaxing by the pool sipping cocktails and others exploring the nearby archaeological ruins. The restaurants just outside the hotel are a great option with delicious reasonably priced pizzas and drinks as the set menu in the hotel was outside our budget. The La Medusa receives A definite recommendation from us to stay and enjoy the area. P.s make sure you try a cappuccino from Maria at breakfast! Thank you to all at the Medusa for a fantastic holiday. We will recommend to others and hope to revisit soon!

Excellent place to stay. All staff and management extremely helpful and pleasant [especial thanks to Antonio and Maria who ALWAYS seemed to be on duty in the restaurant at dinner and breakfast each day and always welcomed us with a smile].

This is a gem of a hotel, great service, lovely staff, fantastic new pool, super rooms and all in a beautiful setting and grounds.
OK so the immediate area around it is not great but who is worried when one is in a super hotel and grounds ?
The staff are superb, friendly, helpful, attentive and welcoming.
We had hire cars and could easily travel around all the sights and found parking easy and the driving fun and well spirited. Do not be put off by the daft guide books who say take the bus/train.There is much to do locally with Vesuvius, Pompeii,Naples, Capri and the whole Amalfi Coast on ones doorstep. There are loads of local restaurants to eat in and the food is all excellent...the hotel staff will recommend where to go and we followed their advice which was always good.
We have stayed in loads of hotels of all types all over the world and its always easy to find faults, trust me this hotel is a very good one.The staff here will do all they can to help. The Manager is very friendly and wants to make sure everyone enjoys their stay.
Italy is a wonderful easy going country one has to just relax and join in........

Room Tip: All the rooms we had were good. The outside steps to the pool made access very simple.

The hotel was lovely, well appointed and enjoyable. A couple of things: if you didn't bring your own towels you must pay daily for pool towels - a good thing to remember! Additionally, the hotel is a bit out of the way, so if you are hoping to enjoy the delights of the Amalfi coast or Sorrento you must be prepared to drive (about 40 min) and the area the hotel is located in is very rough and run down.

Breakfast was very good, lunch left something to be desired and dinner was more than adequate, although we very much enjoyed going into Sorrento in the evenings (although it did mean a drive along winding roads in the dark).

The management greet with great sincerity and kindness. The rooms were surprisingly Italian, which was a lovely surprise as I expected corporate blandness inside and the hotel interior is decorated in a wonderful opulent Italianate style.

I cannot praise the gardens (and attention to detail and resource poured into the upkeep) enough. Endless seating areas hidden in the trees, topiary, flower gardens, sculpture, and gorgeously lit at night with lanterns throughout. No wonder they have many weddings here (we did not see any in August though).

The local area was rubbish strewn and a bit run down but don't let that put you off as the hotel is the most beautiful oasis, and only half hour from Sorrento.

Breakfast in the orangery is grand and fit for a wedding, lovely selection of breakfast (no English breakfast - hooray!), dinner in the restaurant is served by attentive formal waiting staff, making every effort to meet your every need.
Some billing discrepancies (especially regarding the so called free shuttle bus - watch out), but without hesitation I would go back. It's a great base to visit Capri - get up early and get the boat from Castallanmare (the local town). Splash out and book in advance the Fontelina Beach Club in southeast Capri. Head on the footpath from Capri town to the famous hotel where Winston Churchill stayed, then down the steps to the coast. 20e for a bed each, and a pricey lunch, but an absolutely perfect day.

You might even spot a multi millionaire celeb like we did.

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the view. Not much to see from the first floor.

A lovely hotel with very friendly and happy staff who made us feel very welcome. Pool and grounds were fantastic. It was a relaxing atmosphere. The hotel is a little bit isolated so we were pleased that we had a car.

Room Tip: Wifi access would be nice, also MP3 speakers so that we could listen to music

We were overcharged on our bill as items we hadn't had were added. When we noticed this the the owner tried to pass this off as human error (funny how the errors were always in their favour)
A 10 euro per head service charge was added even for our young children when you eat in the restaurant for dinner. A plain salad with Parmesan shavings was 27 euros!!! Plus the 10 euro service charge thus 37 euros really really not worth it!!!!!!
There was a gym advertised which was an absolute joke. The broken equipment was laughable.
If you do end up staying here you will need a car as its completely isolated with nothing in sensible walking distance. In our opinion definitely not worth a visit.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment on the site TRIPADVISOR (as you told me ....) following your stay at The Grand Hotel La Medusa - 4 stars located in a quiet and relaxing street away from " the smog and stress of hectic lifestyle"

The Grand Hotel La Medusa is our little jewel and we take great pride in it. I want all our guests to feel that they are at home....

Just a small note to clarify that Grand Hotel La Medusa always recognize their own mistakes when they are there, but in this case I have to tell you that there are not mistakes….because at our restaurant we will charged the covered service if you choose to eat from the menu 'a la carte and to occupy a place at the table with candles and welcomed and served by professional multilingual staff…

Dear Guest the same staff also provide means to charge both the service and the food using a computer .... a machine.. that can also make mistakes…”Errare Umanum Est”!!! Sorry for!!

Dear Guest maybe perhaps…you busy to swim in our new pool or to take relax in our beautiful park did not read our information or did notice that near to the hotel, at walk distance, there are some restaurant ( read reviews from other customers...) and interesting excavations of rich Roman houses, covered by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the first century AD, that can be visited….or that using our “free shuttle bus” it is possible to reach, in the town, a railway station with a frequent train ( chip, fast and fan) that provides a comfortable connection to Pompeii, Ercolano, Naples and the touristic Sorrento…and the Coast…WITHOUT CAR…

We do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you and family back on a future visit to have a new opportunity.....

Best regards from Stabiae.

The Superior four-star Hotel is a romantic villa "fin de siècle" made up of 49 rooms, whose restoration is constantly in balance between the respect for the past and the influence of contemporary style.A unique and authentic place made of beautiful old trees and surrounded by green surfaces, that admires the spectacular Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. On one hand, the common areas, characterized by an unmistakable style and a wonderful elegance, which completely respect the important classical style of the structure; on the other hand, the rooms, a continuous alternation of contemporary and classical Design.A Hotel, on its own, marked by a deeply individual style where the care for details, quality and hospitality represents the common denominator. The ceramics of Amalfi Coast hand-painted with an exclusive design, the antique furniture and tapestries characterize the lobby, the bar and the restaurant situated on the ground floor of the hotel; so quiet places, that make possible living in a private and protected dimension... where each detail becomes a pleasure to be relished. The huge glass windows in «Liberty Style» divide the building from the secular park: an explosion of flowers and colours, a wide open-air sitting-room completely equipped with chaise-longue, easy-chairs and gazebos; an unforgettable atmosphere beyond every expectation.Around the park full of flowers, the outside «Fitness Corner» represents an opportunity to keep oneself fit in an uncontaminated and healthy environment; the wellness swimming-pool with geysers, the sun beds, the large solarium represent an occasion of certain and pleasant relax. From here just a step to get to the «Pool Bar» for an aperitif, and another for sipping a vintage wine at the outside restaurant «Il Gazebo & Le Terrazze» in the middle of the citrus grove. Here the Chef suggests a refined, precious Mediterranean and International cuisine, a perfect balance among tastes, smells and colours.Excellent services like a Mercedes shuttle bus to the city centre or the close beaches, the free parking, the opportunity to rent a yacht or book private excursions and much more... will make your stay unforgettable. ... more   less
