We spent a week in the region plumping for Rodoflor and Castellamare as not too touristy but accessible for the Circumvesuviana and the port for a ferry to Capri. Roberta, our hostess was friendly, kind and helpful and permitted us to leave our bags until our evening flight. The B and B is situated in an unprepossessing apartment block but inside it is clean and spacious. The room was fresh and spacious and the air con worked well. The shower cubicle was a little tired but plenty of hot water. Breakfasts were a little too much on the starchy side but Roberta did produce yoghurts into our stay. A little noisy in the apartment block - hard surfaces so footsteps carry and we could hear toilets flushing etc.
Castellamare is a working Italian town and it is good to get a flavour of the real Italy however it is a little run down and not geared up to tourism. We found a couple of good restaurants within a 5 - 10 minute walk but facilities much reduced on sundays. On our last day we had 7 hours to fill and Castellamare is not the place to be! Otherwise, we found the public transport system efficient and had a busy and most enjoyable week visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast and Napoli. We were a little concerned about the bad press for Naples ie theft, lack of cleanliness and undesirable elements but we absolutely loved working our way through the narrow streets of the old town and everyone we met was friendly. A good holiday all in all.
