“Not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2012

No visit to Benevento is complete without a visit to Nunzia. It is just what people expect Italian restaurants to be, but they seldom are. Try the scarpariello, drink a glass of the local aglianico, and chat to Nunzia and Antonio. A 360 degree experience, not to be missed.

“fantastic authentic cooking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

We loved this so much we returned a second evening. The restaurant is run by a mother and son team and the son translates as required.there is no menu and the lovely mother will pull up a chair and run through what is available that night. The highlight when we visited was a beautiful pasta with tomatoes and monkfish. The food is simple but beautifully executed and full of flavour . We had pasta with artichokes, legumes, baked stuffed cuttlefish, baby octopus in tomato sauce , salmon and tuna over the two evenings. Accompaniments include fresh bread and a variety of side dishes ( we had grilled aubergine, courgettes with mint and grilled peppers). The wine list is all local and Antonio will happily recommend something to go with your choices. Both evenings we were there it was full ( mostly locals ) so book or turn up at 8 when it opens . Highly recommended.

“Awesome traditional italian food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2012

The owners are very friendly and the food is outstanding. There is no written menu as the owner will tell you verbally what food they have. I had a traditional pasta with goat cheese which was very simple and the taste was just perfect. They also have a huge selection of wines - try some of the wines from the region. Spent around EUR 25 for a starter and a main dish including a glass of wine and bought a bottle of excellent italian wine (EUR 12) which was absolutely reasonable. If you are in Buenevento this place is a must do - highly recommended - you won't regret it!!!

“Good old Grand Mom Cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

It will be like returning to your grand Mom's place, and re-trying those tasty and light family home dishes you never found elsewhere. Nunzia, the Owner and Chef, looks and behaves like a family person, and has a talent to set an immediate feeling with people.
Go for the most traditional (and rare!) dishes, like the "cardone" (a winter soup with egg and meat balls in a thistle-savoured chicken stock), the "lagane e ceci" (thick hand-made noodles in a delicate chickpea puree), the "bruschetta con fagioli" (a baked bread slice topped with creamy, gently spiced, beans, in an emulsion of extra virgin olive oil), to mention a few.
Servings are generous, and you are advised to share your dish with your company, to live room enough for some of the typical main courses like the "seppia al forno con patate " (potato-stuffed cattle-fish) or the "maiale con pupacchielle" (pork fillet with vinegar-seasoned red peppers), or the mouth-watering "mozzarella di bufala" and honey-dressed "ricotta" cheeses from local farms.
You will also find a nice selection of wines from the best cellars of Campania region - and the price will be honest.
Don't miss for dessert the "cassatina di S.Marco" and Nunzia's home-made "pastiera" and "baba" to conclude a relaxing and pampering dining experience.

“So good, we went twice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2011

This restaurant is a true delight. The freshest ingredients feature in delicious regional cooking. With no menu, you simply discover what is on offer that day..

My husband and I have a passion for the vegetable cime di rapa - hard to get in London where we live - and to our delight, they had plenty in the kitchen. It came for me with perfectly cooked scialatelli pasta and for my husband with a slightly spicy roasted sausage.

The owner is a delightful woman who sits with you for both deciding what you'll eat and the preparation of the bill, helped by her charming, English-speaking son. We were treated like we were one of the family. To top off the evening, we had a glass of Strega, the Benevento liquor with its essence of citrus and herbs.

When it came time decide where to eat on our second and final night in Benevento, there was no question - we were back to Ristorante Nunzia to savour the wonderful flavours of Capania again. We will be remembering them long into the future.
