“A bit like marmite, you'll either love it or hate it”

We were looking for a bargain ski deal and booked through Crystal to stay at HDG a little over 3 weeks before travelling, we didn't do too much research beforehand but we weren't disappointed.

Bardonecchia is perhaps an awkward ski resort, the main town is an easy 25 minute walk from the main slopes in Campo Smith, this of course means that you either stay close to the slopes or the town. HDG is approximately 5 minutes away from the main streets of the town and is nestled out of site hiding behind other hotels, this made for a quiet location.

Bedrooms were clean and perfectly adequate, perhaps a little small. The ensuite was a little cramped but was clean, the shower clearly wasn't installed for someone who is 6' tall but it delivered plenty of water.

We stayed half board so ate in the restaurant for breakfast and evening dinner, food was not fancy but was adequate. One complaint was that of the speed of service, plates were taken before the last person had finished and courses came in quick succession often with no time between each.

The defining moment for us was when my girlfriend took a tumble whilst skiing, we went to hospital 50km away in Susa. The hotel did everything that they could to help our friends get to the hospital. When we returned to the hotel we were helped with getting crutches, the hotel owner even had the porter drive us into a restaurant in town one afternoon and picked us up afterwards. There was genuine interest and concern for my GF from the owner and staff.

HDG is what I would describe as a character hotel, whilst the hotel is most definitely dated this fact can be overlooked by the warmth and character that is offered.

The key question is would I stay here again, yes is would, I'd go back tomorrow.

We yet again visited the hotel booking direct with them. They allow you to book the exact number of days required and offer attractively priced half board rates. We normally try to book a late return flight so we can have a full days skiing on our final day, the hotel has always let us keep our room to our departure time (normally early evening] with no extra charge, i have seldom found hotels to be so accommodating! As an independent traveller we hire a car at Turin airport and drive up to the resort, this only takes about an hour and gives you the flexability of having your own transport to get to and from the ski runs. The hotel does offer a courtesy bus to and from Campo Smith if you do not have a hire car. The resort offers good value ski passes and equipment hire, the slopes are un crowded Monday to Friday and even at the weekends when a large number of locals visit you can avoid the crowds by skiing at the Jafferau Ski area. An excellent hotel and resort for a short break in the Alps.

I was recently skiing in Bardonecchia and because I wanted a single that we had to pick Des Geneys. It was rated *** so we were not worried about the choice of hotel. I can only say the staff were great trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Because Bardonecchia has no night life at all the hotel tried its best to make the evening before dinner as lively as it could. There were one couple staying at the hotel and this was there 13th visit which must say something!
The hotel has a mini-bus which runs in the morning to take skier to Campo Smith and does 1 run back in late afternoon at 4:30. If you want to return to the hotel any earlier than that there is a free local bus service which runs every 20 minutes. The local bus stops at the bottom of the road and all you have to do is to walk around 300 yards to the hotel. The hotel does have it own ski store which is heated but I would recommend that you rent a locker at Campo Smith to store skis and boots as it is a pig to do this walk carrying skis and wearing boots.

The resort itself as I stated before is very quiet with virtually no nightlife with few taxi's so even if your tried to get to an event it is an event itself to get back to the hotel unless it is based in the main town centre which is very close. The skiing was fine when we were there in mid January 2014 as 1.3 meters of snow fell giving fresh powder most days. At Campo Smith all of the sking is done with trees around giving good sight lines even in flat light which can't be said about the Jafferau as most of the good skiing is above the tree line.

Stayed with family over the Christmas break and had a lovely time. Very friendly and attentive staff. Comfortable rooms and very good food. The hotel was tucked away down a side street so nice and quiet but near the bus stop for the free service around the resort. They also have a complimentary bus service in the morning to Campo Smith where the main lifts are for skiing.

We booked to stay at the Hotel Geneys, as a fairly last minute ski package holiday. We were swayed by the number of reports on Trip Advisor about how friendly the hotel is - and we would agree that the whole team was very friendly and welcoming indeed. We were also attracted by the large and comfortable lounge area, which meant that there was plenty of space to sit and socialise after dinner. I would also say that the breakfast provision was excellent. Rooms were basic, but kept very clean and there was plenty of storage space for ski luggage.

However - a few points to beware of which may not appeal to everyone:
- the hotel is down a narrow lane, which our bus could not access. This meant that we had to drag our luggage uphill about 400 metres from the public bus stop through snow. Several guests complained about this and the hotel did help by transporting the luggage in the mini-van in the return journey.
- the hotel is more than 2 minutes to the public bus stop (downhill there/ uphill on the return) - 400 metres with skis etc is quite a way.
- there was entertainment organised every evening after dinner, which sometimes went on very late and was audible from our room on the second floor.
- entertainment on New Year's Eve involved a scantily clad young lady wiggling her tattooed bottom around the dining tables - rather inappropriate given the number of children!

Finally - a couple of things to be aware of for Bardonecchia (not related to the hotel) - you can only buy a one or 2 day ski pass at Campo Smith. 3+ day passes need to be bought in town. And - make time to go and ski at Jafferau - the slopes were so quiet, it was like having your own private ski resort - and beautiful!

Myself and my family stayed here over the Christmas period for a skiing holiday. We immediatley felt welcome in the hotel, and the staff could not do enough for us, throughout our stay. We had our 12 month old daughter with us and the hotel staff gave her toys to play with at dinner and also lent her a sledge to play with.

When we arrived we were shown a few different rooms and given a choice of where we would like.

The food was excellent. There was plenty of choice at the breakfast buffet and the evening meals were also very tasty.

Our room was very clean, and we made use of the free bus to the slopes each morning, The bus runs at 9am and 9.30am each day but if you miss those, then there are regular free buses running just a short walk from the hotel.

There is also a good supermarket nearby in which you can buy just about anything.

Highly recommend this hotel and am likely to be going back!

The Des Geneys is a great little hotel. Staff couldn't be friendlier and food was excellent. Although away from the slopes still a good location - a nice walk to the chairlift (or use the free ski bus if you prefer) and then right next to town centre for bars in the evening. Highly recommended and would definitely go back
