“Excellent hosting!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

A group of six of us has just returned from the Dolomites after a great holiday made special by Dan and his team (Sarah, Flee, Rick, Charlie and Terry) who could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The first day skiing with Dan meant that we had a very good idea of the pistes and refuggios for the rest of the week.

The chalet is a bus ride from the lifts so not ideal but the shuttle bus was always on time.

The ambiance was friendly, the food good, the rooms spacious and warm with comfortable beds. We would happily return.

Thanks again!!

Have stayed 4 times as a couple at Haus Valentin as part of a Collett's Dolomites holiday. Food excellent German, not fussy, pretentious haute cuisine. Very sociable place, with excellent terrace for watching the sun go down over the Fames. Haven't been in August, only in July, so haven't had other reviewer's problem with large numbers of visitors. Self-service bar (honesty book) works well. Some rooms small, but the Dolomites are for walking and climbing, not sitting around.

Room Tip: Rooms costed on size - motorbike noise is a curse throughout the Alps, but at least the church bells...

We stayed with Collets at Haus Valentin in Jan 2012 and we're booked to go back again in Feb 2013. I sympathise with the previous reviewer - and if we go in the summer season it won't be in August!

Emily and the Collets team at HV were great - you could not wish for more friendly, helpful, sociable people. Chalet very comfortable, nice relaxing bar area, food good - not Haute Cuisine, but good tasty food, exactly what you want when skiing, snow-shoe walking etc. Organised ski trips, mini-bus transfers to/from the ski lifts, help with ski passes etc. It was also apparent that many of the guests were people returning for the third, fourth, fifth time.

The Dolomites are stunning - apparently this is still technically 'the alps' but very different to the western alps which you may be familiar with. They also have the great combination of 90 days of sunshine between Dec and March combined with consistently low temperatures - so even if the snow is a bit low, the great network of snow-making machines are very effective at topping things up. Lift system is excellent - and apart from one place in Arabba, it's the most modern and best linked system I've come across (- & that includes the Three Valleys).

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

My husband and I had a 10 day walking holiday with Colletts staying at their catered chalet at Haus Valentin, Pedraces, Badia. It was August 2012 and more than that, our holiday co-incided with an Italian bank holiday. That is important to remember when reafing this review.

From our point of view the whole area seemed to be heaving with people. It was a struggle to get on the local buses - lots of push and shove, sometimes standing room only and on one occassion we needed to wait an hour for the next bus. Several of the ski lifts, (cable cars, chair lifts etc) were in operation but places like Pralonga Plateau were swarming with people. On the distant wide tracks to us, people looked like ants just crawling around.

The hotel was clean, the room pleasant with balcony and excellent view - however this was spoilt by the noise of passing traffic - motobikes make a deafoning sound. The hotel provided good food and the company was friendly - everyone sits around long tables sharing meals together. But there is no choice - other than if you want to ask for vegetarian meals. Lots of chat in the evening about who had done what during the day. Lots of board games and maps/guides available. It's possible to join an organised activity or do your own thing.

We did some self guided long walks (6 hours plus) but didn't go up into the higher exposed regions where scree slopes and scrambling, vertical edges etc are common place. Many people at Haus Valentin were doing Via Ferata routes for which special equipment needs to be hired.

The Dolomite scenery is stunning, wild flowers abound but from my perspective just too many ski lifts and tourist development (hotels, chalets, resturants, sports kit shops, traffic etc.) We had good weather - lots of sun, some cloud but rain only at night.

We didn't find a place for quiet relaxation but maybe that's not what you want.

Room Tip: If you go for a room with a balcony at the front of the house, if the traffic is less you might just...
