This Agriturismo is located in a lush valley with craggy mountains in the background. After the long plane ride from Seattle to Amsterdam to Rome to Olbia and car rental and drive, Ca La Somara was an oasis! Laura and Alberto have created the perfect place to stay in Northern Sardinia. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms and main house were spotless, and beautifully designed and decorated, and the hospitality and food were amazing! The rooms and grounds are just as wonderful as they look on their website (google “Ca La Somara”). Agriturismo are, by definition, farms in the countryside with rooms or apartments for rent for vacationers. Some Agriturismo sites seem dicier-lookng than others, but Ca La Somara is at the top of its class. We love animals and were thrilled to see the donkey, the Saint Bernard (Morgana), the geese, and the chickens who laid eggs that are served at breakfast. Breakfast was not the typical Italian B&B cold croissant and caffè, but rather, a huge and delicious spread served in the main farmhouse and the yogurt is divine.
Ca La Somara is conveniently located in Northern Sardinia (and much more reasonably priced than the hotels of Costa Smeralda!). Laura’s directions for the drive from Olbia (a 20 minute drive) were correct and easy to follow. One can use Ca La Somara as a base to explore the beautiful northern interior, the beaches of the east, west and north, or the stunning La Maddalena archipelago. And, after a day’s exploring, it was a great place to come home to!
A highlight of our stay was having dinner there, which turned out to be one of the best meals we have ever had! Dinner consisted of delicious Sardinian style antipasti, pasta, a vegetarian rataouille-style dish and/or roasted goat, dessert, an endless flow of the very tasty local Marrubiu wine and our introduction to one of our favourite things about Sardinia: mirto! This liqueur is made only in Sardinia from local myrtle berries and absolute alcohol and served as a digestivo. Absolutely delicious! We had dinner communal-style at a big table with three other couples, all Italian (from Trento, Milan and Rome) and all incredibly nice people, with whom we talked through the night (and even played a bit of guitar, thoughtfully set nearby by Laura & Alberto). We could not have had a better start to our stay in Italy!
