“Romantic Luxury Tucked Away in Sicilian Countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013 via mobile

This was one of the most fabulous hotels I have ever stayed at. Everything from the views, to the service to the rooms were perfect. The hotel looks unassuming upon arrival however once you enter it is transformed into spectacular interiors.

CROWD: Chic Italians, well travelled couples and families, individuals looking for an escape to the countryside. Very quiet, peaceful and enjoyable group of people.

ROOMS: state of the art rooms. Every hotel room goes above and beyond in it's finishings and interiors. The bathroom is pristine and the furniture is contemporary chic. Very tasteful. There is not a bad room in the entire hotel and every room boasts a perfect picturesque view of the valley of temples. It is truly breathtaking waking up and falling sleep to such splendor

STAFF: very friendly, polite and professional. Willing to help if looking for suggestions. My only critique is that a tour of the valley of temples does not cost 120 eur per person - that's quite absurd.

COST: we spent 300 eur for one night. Definitely on the expensive side but worth it for the fabulous hotel and pool.

Con: the only tealy crtique i have is that the hotel has a fabulous view of the temples and will not serve you a glass of wine while admiring the view! The pool is spectacular and it would have been wonderful to enjoy the views w a glass of wine. The only place you can get food/drinks is a little cafe behind the hotel which does not have a view or anything.

Thank you for a fabulous stay! I will definitely return!

I was giving a suite facing the Valley of Temples. Extremely clean, excelent service, very good food and a fantastic view, all very private, which was exactly what I was looking for. I could drive easily to town to go to a nice restaurant. The breakfast, included, was very good, with fruits, jams, breads, hotties and a very good fresh coffee. Recepcionists were knowledgeable and helpful and the olive trees were a charm. Oranges from the trees were also a treat. All in all, the best hotel I stayed in my 40 days in Italy. Highly recomend it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the temples. If you are looking for a honeymoon, be ready because you will get...

Obviously, the location is great. Our room (302) looked directly onto the Temple Concordia, the best preserved Greek temple in the world. Watching the temple at dusk was spellbinding.

But Villa Athena would be a very fine hotel regardless of its location. The room was comfortable (if a bit small), with plenty of amenities. The bathroom was very nice, and the shower had a cool porthole window that looked out at the temple too.

We had two breakfasts and two dinners in the hotel's restaurant. The breakfasts were pretty good, although language issues prevented us from ordering eggs the way we liked. Both dinners were great. The red-wine pasta with duck sauce was especially delicious.

The tour we were on included the hotel, so I don't know the cost. But if you're spending a couple of days in Agrigento, I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

This hotel provides a scripted format for what it believes to be a top class service.
Each member of staff has a role to play and acts as instructed, almost robotically.
In performing this however, all trace of personal character in communicating with guests is strictly forbidden and stripped away.

The hotel certainly has a style but the glaringly lack of heart destroys any substance of character. The warm, amenable personalities of its staff are quite often top of the list of reasons that guests return to a hotel and in this area the Villa Athena fails miserably.

There is no question that the location of Villa Athena, set among the ancient temples of Agrigento is idyllic and in being so entitles the hotel to charge above average rates.
However, we feel that this entitlement is abused with extra charges for some services that are taken for granted as free in lesser rated establishments.

For instance, there were no tea-making facilities in the room but it was possible to order some in the lounge for 4euros per cup. The Sky TV service in the room did not include all sports therefore to watch the Formula 1 race we would have been asked to pay extra.

The hotel restaurant whilst stylish in a modern design lacks that 5star ambience albeit there is an evening ritual of bringing the chef around to each table to introduce him to the guests [again, a role play].It is also very expensive and not great value for money.
Unfortunately there are no other places for dining within walking distance and very few in the nearby coastal resort of San Leone a short drive away. We had been warned that parking in the town of Agrigento was virtually impossible therefore gave this a miss and were stuck with dining at the hotel.

Unless one is deeply into archaeological history then 2 days is ample time for seeing the Valley of temples. We would recommend a stay in a nearby area and travel in to the site and to wear reasonable walking shoes because there is a fair distance between some of the sites.

Would we recommend this hotel? Only if you have money to throw away but even then demand a room with view of the Temple on the south side in order to get some sort of value for your money.

Room Tip: There is a distinct feel of have and have nots here. Rooms in the north face the high hills of Agrig...

Very comfortable hotel with well thought out rooms, beautiful garden setting and stunning backdrop. Staff were welcoming and helpful. We ate in the restaurant - glass floors over archeological remains at it's entrance worth seeing and the restaurant view is of the Archeological Park which is lit up at night.Place classic old style with formal service and reasonable food. Glad we stayed here.

The moment you enter your room, you feel sorry you have to leave it in a few days :-) Very nice, spacy room, a bathroom to spend your day in, a walk-in dressing... Wonderful view, tranquility allover. It's a short walk to the temples or the museum. Great breakfast, and we had nice dinners. Lunch at noon was a bit 'simple'. Very friendly, professional staff. Pity there is no fitness room.

With world-beating views over the Valley of the Temples, lovely rooms, helpful staff and an excellent restaurant, this for me is pretty much as good as it gets. Room rates are steep, but great online deals are available.

Room Tip: Obviously the rooms facing the Valley (and with private balconies) are the ones to go for, but you p...
