We went to the Rusty Gun this month on a warm Tuesday evening, there was a really great atmosphere with low level lighting, candles on every table and pleasant ambient music in the background.
To start we had the Duck & Spring Onion Bhajis with Hoi Sin & Soy sauce, Bean Sprout, Cucumber & Spring Onion salad. The Shredded duck inside was really tender and the Bhaji gave an explosion of flavour in the mouth, the portion size of 3 was just right. We can see why this dish is so popular! We also had the Homemade Fish Cake served on a bed of Watercress & Rocket, with Homemade Chilli Jam. The Fish Cake was crispy on the outside with soft and fluffy salmon on the inside, the Chilli Jam gave a nice little kick to the fish without being overpowering. This was another great starter.
For the main course we decided to try the signature dish - Taste of The Rusty Gun Pork with Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Tenderloin Wrapped in Prosciutto and a miniature Sausage Roll served with Creamy Truffle Mash, Pickled Apple and Tender Stem Broccoli sautéed with pine nuts. If you like pork then you will love this dish which offers 3 fantastic variations of pork; the belly was tender with crispy crackling, the tenderloin was delicious and the sausage roll had delicate fresh pasty on the outside with tasty sausage meat inside. The accompanying mash and apple really worked with the pork and it all came together in to a wonderful dish!
We also tried the Slow Braised Lamb Shank with Goat’s Cheese Mash, Green Vegetables and a Rosemary Jus - I have to say I was also blown away by this dish which has always been one of my favourites; the slow cooked lamb just fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. The goats cheese mash had a fantastic flavour and the vegetables were crunchy and perfectly cooked.
For dessert we had “Cream tea”/”Jelly & ice cream” which offered Strawberry shortbread with Earl Grey Jelly and Milk Ice Cream - The shortbread was delicious with the cream and strawberries, and the Tea Flavoured Jelly with Milk ice-cream complemented the dessert perfectly. We also had the Chocolate, Raspberry & Lime Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries and Chocolate Crisp. The Cheesecake was light and creamy with a lovely texture and tasted divine. The Raspberries and Chocolate Crisp added a fantastic flavour to the dish which we really enjoyed.
I have to say the food was outstanding; fresh, beautifully presented generous portions which were good value considering the quality and the staff were all very helpful and friendly.
