This agriturismo is in the area of Monferrato in Piedmont which is rightly famous for its excellent food and not for its pretty villages or scenery . So don't be disappointed if Vignale Monferrato doesn't quite meet expectations. It certainly isn't one of Italy's most picturesque villages. Having said that the property Dré Casté is extremely pleasant. It is a "palazzetto signorile" ie more of a stately town house than a cascina or farm house. The rooms upstairs are very well furnished with antiques and beautifully frescoed. We didn't have the en suite bathroom but didn't have to share and it was down the corridor, large, light and charming with a nice bath tub as well as shower which you don't always find in Italy.
However, the point of coming here is to eat and drink and not drive anywhere afterwards. Our dinner consisted of an antipasto of salumi and a delicious cold ratatouille, a savoury leek tart, cotechino with fonduta, fried aubergines with cream cheese, caprino with mostarda.....First course agnolotti al burro and fettucine with cabbage and sausage, main course roast pork with carrots and baby onions..three different deserts. 27 euros. plus 12 for an excellent bottle of superior barbera and 60 for b&b. I won't tell you what we had for breakfast, you can find out for yourselves! Highly reccommended.
