Osteria Gemma in Roddino Italy is just about five miles from Monforte D'Alba and is in the heart of Barolo country. If you like Becco, you'll love Gemma. Four visitors took the advice of the wine guide,Chiara, at the lovely and state of the art Conterno Fantino Vineyard, and opted for a long and leisurely lunch. Given the mountain roads of the Piemonte opting for a day light drive is always a good idea. Upon entering the Osteria, guests became immediately aware that this is a local restaurant. There was a table of half a dozen men sitting and having a long lunch with wine. Italian is spoken by guests adding to the supposition that this is indeed a local foodie favorite. There really is no menu to speak of; you sit down and the courses just start flowing. If you have any dislikes, let them be know early on (one of our party has a fish allergy). Once the food starts, a diner has no control of the schedule; when a dish is empty another takes its place. Every time it appeared as though the lunch was over yet another dish appeared. Finally our server/owner asked about "dolci" and we knew our journey was coming to an end. However, one more surprise was about to unfold: four desserts, each large enough to serve a table, arrived. With a local Barbaresco, four diners ate lavishly and the bill came to E104 total. If life brings you to the Piemonte Region of Italy (and it should!) then a visit to Osteria Gemma is a must. Mangia!
