We took one of the houses when visiting Cyprus for a wedding at the weekend plus several days either side pure holiday. Skarinou is strategically located in the south near motorways to the north, east and west of the island ... so for complete strangers to Cyprus, it is an ideal location - about 25 minutes from Larnaca airport, an hour from Pafos, an hour from Nikosia. Because it is in the hills you get relief from the heat. You will appreciate the stone and flowers style of the cottages when you compare them with the mass production, identical pattern, concrete boxes on the side of the road from the airport.
The houses are in a complex involving a fair amount of climbing and steps, so not for the elderly or infirm. But after that, what a pleasure. Most of the rooms have individual courtyards or balconies for sitting out. Cleaning is scrupulous, but those of a fastidious nature may not like the idea of putting used toilet paper in a bin at the side of the toilet rather than flushing .. something to do with septic tanks and sewerage systems. The pool is properly maintained ... scrubbed every morning.
The bed sizes in many rooms are standard UK double rather than queen or king, so may be rather small for large people. Room 3, at the end of a courtyard, seems to have the largest bed and most room inside. The shower room is spacious with very hot water (watch out!) and the little kitchen has microwave/grill oven, small fridge/freezer, adequate crockery for 2-4.
Nearby amenities -- forget the supermarket that went bust in Spring 2013 or the MacDonald's that still flourishes at the motorway exit -- there are lots of little shops nearby (but you DO need a car), including a dairy shop that sells wonderful halumi and sheep's yoghurt right on the main road into the village. (Reputedly the best in South East Cyprus). Also the Olive Tree restaurant at the end of the village heading north -- really good traditional Cypriot food.
Pricing (June 2013) is right too. Through BookCyprus we paid €45 a night -- the rack rate is €65, so do watch out when making bookings.
Ask for the one at the end of the courtyard - and make sure the bed is big enough for you!
