“Splendid Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

Returned on the 11th July from another glorious stay at The Al Bustan Hotel. This Hotel is absolutely superb. We have already made our reservation for three weeks next year. Staff are first class and although we had a few niggles it didn't detract from the wonderful time that we always have. A couple of the restaurants were closed which did not worry us nor did the fact that the Bar was closed. A makeshift Bar was created in the Brasserie but we didn't use it and rarely have in the past. We enjoy going out in the evening and eating in local Coffee Shops, this way you get to eat and mix with a variety of different people and over the years we have made many friends. The exchange rate is poor so things do appear expensive especially the Taxi's but prices have barely changed over the last seven years. The Breakfast is good, but not as lavish as it has been, the selection of food has been greatly reduced and I have noticed since Ritz Carlton has taken over they have made cut backs - silly things, but nice touches that guests remember and miss on their return visits.
The Pool staff are fantastic and the pool bar staff are forever replenishing cold water, bringing round fresh fruit and frozen fruit shots, much appreciated in hot weather. It is such a pleasure to see old faces and meeting with staff from previous years who make us feel very much at home.
The biggest disappointment for me was the fact that they chose not to have a Ramadan Tent again I fear another Ritz Carlton cut back. In the past a lavish tent has been erected in the grounds beautifully furnished with silk drapes, carpets, cushions and exquisite lighting and the most wonderful food this year it was held in the Buffet Restaurant which did not create the right atmosphere for the Iftar Meal so again we went out instead of eating in the Hotel. If you want to feel pampered, special and experience understated sophistication and service The Al Bustan Palace Hotel is still the best Hotel in Muscat. If you want brash glitz and sports bars go somewhere else it's not the place for you.

Everything about this hotel was fantastic. From the moment we arrived, every member of staff were so helpful and attentive without being intrusive! Had the hotel virtually to ourselves (it was their summer. Temperatures in the 40s) The food every single night was superb. We tried all the restaurant's and they were all first class. On the beach the boys bought you water in a call box and it was replenished all day. Omani coffee and dates in the reception area was something we sampled every day (try it) flavoured with spices it was wonderfully refreshing! I could go on and on. We cant wait to go back. Very safe. Try it!

Room Tip: we liked the mountain view rooms, just our personal choice. Sitting on the balcony in the evening wa...

We stayed for a 3 week holiday in May '13 in a mountain view room. This was our 2nd stay at this hotel and we had another fabulous time (see previous review from September '12), so much so that we have already booked to return this September for another 19 nights.
We stayed in a sea view room during our first stay but this time opted for a mountain view. The hotel is octagonal in shape and we were assigned a room on an upper floor on the side of the hotel. This gave us views of the mountains and the sea so we felt that we had the best of both worlds.
We have nothing but praise for the Al Bustan Palace and its staff. The rooms are well equipped and very clean. The beach and sports facilities are also very good. Although we didn't use the gym, my husband regularly used the tennis court. There was just a small charge for hire of rackets and balls and they provide you with a cool box containing water and face cloth. The pools are the best we've ever experienced. The 50m infinity pool is never crowded even at weekends and the lagoon pools are usually a quiet and relaxing place to be. The grounds and beach are extremely well maintained and there were even long strips of carpet over the sand from the grass to the sea so that you don't burn your feet!
We would like to give a special mention to the Al Khiran restaurant. We ate there for the majority of our meals and found the choice and quality of food to be extremely good. The seafood evening buffet is amazing with lobster, prawns, crab etc. Every member of staff in the Al Khiran contributed to making it a fabulous and memorable dining experience. This includes the managers, supervisors, hostesses, waiters/waitresses, chefs and cooks. They looked after us so well and provided such a personalised service. We would like to say a big 'thank you' to the whole team for making it such a special place and for the personal touches and exceptional level of service.
Thanks to everyone at the Al Bustan Palace for another peaceful, enjoyable and relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again in 6 weeks time.

Very classy. A beautiful location and excellent service. I used it as a place to "get away" and for that it was perfect. I ate well and felt well cared for. I didn't actually do much but I suppose that was the point. There's a very good gym and tennis courts and so on. The grounds are expansive. It's pretty much what it says on the box. Connections to the airport are easy and fairly quick. Recommended.

We spent 6 nights at the Al Bustan and couldn't really fault it. The room was big, bed comfortable, amenities excellent (Asprey!). Being low season, some of the restaurants were closed but the buffet in the main ding room every night had more than enough to give a variety of eating options. We stayed half board and I'd recommend that as the menus are pricey, but then it is a 5 star resort. A glass of wine was about £9 - in line with UK city prices I suppose - but the glass was very small - no 250ml glasses here. The staff was superb – all remembering your name very quickly. On our last night we were presented with a thank you card form the restaurant staff – a really nice touch. All in all, a really grand hotel. I’d recommend it.

Room Tip: Pick a room with 4 in the middle for a pool and ocean view - ie 646

A disappointing hotel following a week of pure luxury and indulgence in the Liwa Desert.

Dated, dirty and in need of improvement. How this hotel continues to appear as number 1 in Muscat is beyond me. This was my 3rd visit to Muscat and I would recommend staying at either the Chedi or the Shang-ri la, both of which surpass this hotel easily.

The rooms are standard but in need of a thorough inspection - stained carpets, broken shelving in the wardrobe, a coffee table in need of repair, phones that did not work and general need for a good dusting and clean.

The gym was minimally equipped. Of the 4 running machines; 2 would stop during workout, 1 had a loose strap and the 4 functioned (when not in use by someone else). There was evidently an issue with the air conditioning and the ceiling had partially come down and therefore old soggy towels on the floor to catch the mess. The small towels provided to those working out (when they were available) stank of gawd knows what!!!

Staff were polite and friendly but no personal service. Although I was there for 6 nights the breakfast staff could never get my name correct (unlike previous hotel where on the first morning I was already known to staff my name).

The pool was nice but a little too warm in the temperature, unlike other hotels in the Middle East there did not appear to be any cooling mechanism to chill the pool.

Upon arrival there was a letter waiting to inform guests that there would be maintenance work going on in the gardens, this meant jack hammers going throughout the day removing the concrete near the pool area - not would I would describe as a relaxing part of the trip.

Food was acceptable but mediocre and breakfast for the choice available was very expensive.

All in all the hotel is an average place and not up to the usual standard of a Ritz Carlton - disappointing, but then again hard to live up to the expectation of the exceptional choices available in the Middle East - one to miss, stay elsewhere!!!

My wife and I have just returned from a 10 night holiday at this exceptional hotel. We arrived at 05-00am after a very quick turn around at Muscat airport and were not expecting a room until 08-00am but because it was low season a room was made available to us immediately. We later changed this to a room to one on a higher level without any fuss. The staff are exceptional with every single person knowing your name and always asking if evertyhing was ok.We were on a half board deal and the food is expensive but cooked and presented to perfection.Special mention must go to Mr.Bojan Petrovic the manager of the french brassiere restaraunt who went beyond the call of duty and offered his chef to cook anything that we liked but was not on the menu. The grounds and pools are immaculate. The beach pool boys can be a hit or a miis, it really depends who,s on duty.It is certainly one of the finest hotels we have ever stayed in. One small minor criticism, because it is low season the shuutle bus does not run to Muscat the beach restaraunt was closed and the small bar in the atrium was also closed, this was not pointed out to us when we booked the holiday however it did not spoil a memorable stay.

Room Tip: higher floors on corner gives you views of the mountains, gardens and sea.
