Many years ago I stayed in this hotel, when it was the first international hotel at Muscat surrounded by beach dunes. Today it has grown a lovely garden with plenty of space to relax and it is a stone's throw from the beach. The staff are excellent and bed comfortable ! Best place to eat is Trader Vic's perhaps on its terrace and food choices fantastic. Was also so pleased with the help of Issam and his concierge team who organised a super boat and snorkelling trip one morning and can tell you everything you need to know so never feel lost.

I got bitten all over my face and arms by mosquitos. Housekeeping gave me a bottle of fly spray but not much else. Turned up to business meeting the next morning looking like I'd been in a late night brawl because of the massive swelling on my eye. Got bitten again the next night too and then the hotel changed my room on the last night. I would not stay here again.

Big gym though. Room service food OK but not enjoyable. Dated hotel and decor

Dear Jay E,

Thank you for your feedback on tripadvisor.

Please accept my apologies for your experience. Unfortunately we have Mosquitos in Oman. The hotel and local authorities are doing regular fumigation to keep it at a minimum level.

As you can see from previous comments that this is not a common issue, therefore I hope that you will give us another chance in the near future.

with kind regards

Just returned from a 4 night business trip. All decent hotels in Muscat are extremely overpriced, but this is probably the least "overpriced" for its star rating.

I stayed on the Executive Floor which has use of the Executive Lounge. However, this is where things start to go wrong. The lounge is way too small. Nowhere to sit during the Happy Hour, as it's full of Holiday Makers. This hotel seems to be on the UK tourist trail, and those who pay for the upgrades get use of the lounge. The purpose of an Executive Lounge is to hold meetings and use the facilities for business people - It's more a place to "hang out" for free drinks and nibbles after a hard day by the pool!! My advise is not to book this hotel if you are on business. Pay a bit more and use another one.

On the positive side of things, Trader Vic's is excellent for food, The 24/7 restaurant is also very good (A La Carte and Buffet) The Italian, Red Tomato also looks good, although I didn't eat there.

The only bar in the hotel is the Sports Bar. Ideal if you want sports blasted at you at high volume through the countless TV's, but certainly not a place to relax for a quiet drink. It's a hangout for ex-pat Brits and even has a quiz night on Tuesday! All very Benidorm really, with Pints of bitter and shepherds pies a' plenty!

All in all, this is a tourist hotel with a keen eye on the travelling British Public! What you'll find are Union Flag Shorts, Vest Tops, White Trainers, Tattoos and Lager! Omani Culture is certainly there, but look elsewhere if you are travelling on business or looking to indulge in a Middle Eastern way of life.

Dear Airmilesjames,

thank you very much for your review on tripadvisor.

Please accept my apologies for your experience, especially in our club lounge. Muscat and the hotel is currently in its high season and therefore certain places seemed to be busier than during other times. We have realized that our club lounge needs to be reviewed and we are working with our owning company on an extension to offer more space. Actually most of our guests are business travelers and especially Ambassador Members of ours. With the membership and a certain level comes the access to the lounge. Surely we offer also a huge garden with great facilities which accommodates also the needs of a leisure traveler on vacation, therefore you see also guests on their vacation in our hotel.

I certainly still hope that you will give us another chance in future, especially since you liked our restaurants.

with kind regards

Please keep in mind that this is the oldest of hotels in Muscat and yes it's an Intercontinental but it definitely needs refurbishing!

The good points are:
- nice beach (have to cross a walking path to the sea)
- good location (many snack bars/ coffee shops/ restaurants around the corner, shops and supermarket in walking distance)
- good location as starting point for self-drive/ sightseeing etc
- big swimming pool and childrens' pool
- big garden area with lots of palm trees and lounger chairs.
- tea and coffee making facilities in the room, good big comfortable beds, hot water for bath or shower.
- every evening themed dinner buffet (the seafood buffet is highly recommended, but staff don't inform you that you have to get the grilled lobster from the outside bbq!)
- the garden bar serves delicious 'lime & mint cooler'
- the very reasonable rates.
- very friendly staff

The lesser points are:
- in general the hotel is outdated, it could do with a refurbishment.
The seaview rooms offer a nice view but the concrete balconies are too small to put chairs on, the bathroom was clean but also here: outdated and in need of renovation.

ATM, Avis rental car shop and many souvenir shops (with pushy salesmen) on ground and 1st floor.

Tomatoes Restaurant is way too expensive, the themed buffet dinners at the main restaurant offer good value for money, the other restaurants were closed.
But do have dinner out as well! Muscat has many good restaurants.

Dear DesertroseBe,

thank you very much for your detailed review on tripadvisor.

Feedback like yours is very important and helpful to improve for the future.

I can assure you that we will train our staff in Musandam to be proactive in explaining our fantastic Theme Night buffet better. Further the Tomato menu is getting reviewed currently and your comment will certainly be taken in consideration.

Nevertheless I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found a lot of positive aspects of our hotel.

I sincerely hope to see you soon again.

with kind regards

Spent one night there because preferred hotel in Muscat was full. Waited 15 minutes at business center for someone to come help with a scan. Asked for extra shower gel, got extra shampoo. tried buying a souvenir at the expensive shop near reception but salesman was busy on the phone for 30 minutes. So left without it.

Room is OK but shower a little small, only tub available. TV channels are good. Free internet is slow.

But on the positive side, the breakfast is nice but the restaurant terrace is to be avoided by claustrophobic people. Concierge service was good, friendly and knowledgeable (car parking, restaurants, taxis, etc.). Location is a a 2 minutes walk from the famous Opera, close to beach and a very nice corniche for a walk or run or chicha by the sea. Trader Vicks is within the hotel.

Overall, will stay there only if I have to.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor (6th) for a nice view.

stayed in this hotel for 3 nights while on business. its about a 15 minute ride from the airport.
front desk were efficient and checking in/out went quick.
Rooms are okay, the rooms, hotel building and all its amenities are quite dated. the hotel could do with a refurbishment. the hot water tap in the shower fell off, i had to screw it back on!
room service were great. my food took 20 minutes to come up.
good few hotel outlets to choose from, trader viks being my favorite. its right next door. they've got a British pub which is a nice place to grab a drink and watch sports.
avoid the little shop on the GF. everything in there is double the price.
i used the GYM while i was there and it was pretty good. you have all the equipment you need. hotel is connected to a beach which everyone can use. nice beach to go for a run/walk. not too far from the beach is a row of restaurants and cafes. prices are a lot better than what you get at the hotel.
was only my 2nd time to muscat but i found this hotel just right as it wasn't too far out. if your looking at getting away to muscat for the weekend and fancy a bit of heaven try the Al Bustan Palace hotel, very very nice!

Room Tip: always ask for a sea view room.

i have read a lot of comments about how dated this place is and for sure , having stayed there about 12 years ago, from the outside it looked exactly the same, but the rooms are still very comfortable with superbly luxurious beds, the gardens and pools are wonderful, the bars and restaurants are very pleasant and the unusual atrium is airy, spacious and calming.

We stayed for the weekend because I was running in the Muscat marathon which started from a place right next door so it couldn't have been better located, but the small area of coffee shops next door with the beach right alongside is a very pleasant place to be anyway. And if you are a tourist, the Big Bus Tour goes from a stop just a couple of minutes walk away, plus you have the opera house a stones throw away as well. Of course, if you like your hotels Dubai modern glitzy stle, then you will be disappointed, but if you want calm relaxed 5 star relaxation, this ticks the boxes.

Room Tip: I wouldn't pay the extra for the beach view, our room had a great view of the opera house and th...
