“Good location, great staff but property getting a little tired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

First review but third stay in last 12 months. Pluses are location, friendly and helpful staff and good F&B options. Main minus (apart from cost - hotels in Oman are pricey) is that the property is getting old - and beginning to show it. Good pool and seaside location. Have yet to try the gym but looks OK. Tried executive floor once but found lounge and F&B there average at best - and probably not worth the extra cost. Taxis easy to get - a real plus.

Room Tip: Well worth paying extra for a sea-facing room with a balcony.

Thank you for your kind comments. Our location is certainly great and our high service levels are what we strive to achieve. As for the property we are 35 years old and currently there are renovations underway on the guestroom bathrooms which will certainly make our product more modern and attractive. I hope that you will return to stay with us in the near future once we have the new product available.

The Crowne Plaza is terrific and it gets better and better the longer you stay. It is an older property and has long ago figured out what works and how to make guests comfortable and happy. The very best part is the restaurants, of which there are four, two of which (Italian and Persian) are reputed to be the best of their kind in the city. The food is uniformly excellent, and although they are expensive (Oman is expensive), the quality and thoughtful service justify the cost. I visited as part of a large delegation on government business, and we were especially appreciative of the willingness of staff to give us separate bills for meals and of the early start for breakfast, which is outstanding. The setting, on a cliff top overlooking the Gulf of Oman, is one of the nicest in Muscat and the lawns, tennis courts and pool area make it a green oasis that is refreshing to return to after a day of work. The rooms are not especially large, but they are clean well appointed, with the sort of amenities one expects of a property of this standing in a big international chain: wifi in the rooms, a good mattress, a pillow menu, bathrobe and slippers, house brand soaps and shampoos etc, tea and coffee facilities, mini bar, iron and ironing board, room safe, plenty of free water. They are overdue for refurbishment, however, and we were told that this is scheduled to begin within the next month, with new bathrooms progressively installed in every room and general upgrade to the decor. Service is attentive and generally excellent, although the hotel is extremely popular and was full every night of our two week stay. This workload on staff caused a few problems for our group, including a lost room booking and some glitches over restaurant bookings and payments. These were quickly fixed, however, and we had no serious complaints. I've stayed here a number of times over several years and will be happy to do so again in future. If you value being well looked after by your hotel more than having superficial style and indifferent service, this is the hotel to choose.

Room Tip: Re-confirm your booking, just to make sure there has been no problem. If you can spend a bit more, b...

This hotel has great views over the coastline and the terrace makes a nice place to have a drink in the evening. That's about all the positive comments I would have.

The hotel has definitely seen it's best days and looks tired, worn and dated. The tiling in the pool area looks old, chipped and dirty... and the lobby could definitely do with an update. Similarly the room - albeit clean and and a comfortable date - definitely could do with some modernizing and touching up.

I thought the cost of food and drinks in the hotel was unjustifiably high given the standard offered.

I had a major issue with hiring one of the taxis provided by the hotel. Despite having assurances that they knew where I wanted to go, we drove around for almost an hour, I subsequently missed an important meeting, and simply had to return to the hotel given the driver clearly had no idea where he was going. I mentioned the issue at reception and told a Manager would get back to me - this never happened - not great service!

If making another trip to Muscat, I would definitely try a different, newer hotel.

Thank you for your comments on TripAdvisor. The views are certainly wonderful and a great place to enjoy a drink in the evenings. Currently we are in the process of renovating our guestroom bathrooms over the summer period in an effort to provide an up to date product for our guests. I trust the improvements we are doing will encourage you to return to stay with us in the future and we hope to be able to welcome you back to the Crowne Plaza Muscat.

I would totally recommend a trip to the Crown Plaza hotel in Muscat to admire the view as the sun sets. It really is a view to die for. Stick to beer while admiring this view, the cocktails were the worst I've ever experiences. No skill or imagination went into their design or creation and they tasted like fruit cordial. We dined in the Italian restaurant and the food was very very bland and hence very disappointing. I'd return for beer or wine and the view but certainly not for food.

Good room size, twins bed provided on request with very comfortable pillows! Bathroom well sized, although a little outdated (but very clean!). Complimentary 'sleep spray' for the pillows and dates was a lovely touch.

Free wifi in the room.

We ate at the bar twice - great food and atmosphere, but I would recommend booking if you want to sit outside (where there is a brilliant view). We also had the seafood buffet - fantastic value for money, great service.

Generally high standard of customer service - my travel companion lost her luggage, and they followed this up promptly and kept us informed.

Good sized gym with personal trainers on hand to help out anytime! Lovely pool area. The beach itself was covered with sharp shells- would advise sandals - but a lovely nook to sunbathe in :)

I expected a lot more!!

I am a bit divided. Really, really, really small rooms, these are apparently being refurbished soon. The balcony was a bit devoid of any love! Two chairs, and one sun bed, but no table.

Beds and pillows were fantastic! Really comfortable.

The hotel had different events on each night, the wine and food on the lawn was great. Especially that the manager and other hotel staff were there. It was really nice to chat with people living and working in Oman. I really enjoyed meeting other guests also.

The dinner we had one night, "steak night" was just amazing! Really wonderful food, cooked to perfection! Breakfast was amazing, but far too expensive if you are not a big eater! You can have fruit, and a cooked breakfast with coffees and such at a local cafe for three people for the price of one at the hotel. Just a hint!

The beach was something a little different, lovely to have to opportunity to relax by the sea. Beautiful shells.

My only complaint was that we had an issue with communication, with regards to an air[port pick up. It didn't happen. We arrived really late after travelling from Africa, and the crazy customs!!!! (Keep local currency, or US $ to make this a lot less pain full!) and I didn't feel that the check in staff registered that we were a bit annoyed that we were not picked up at the airport, we did show proof of communication upon arrival. However we were left a msg that we would have a airport transfer on our departure for free. This was not the case!!! This was charged, not taxi prices but a private car price.

Also the hotel bill was not itemised, this surprised me. I would like to know where I spent my money.

So I guess that how you leave a hotel can often stay in your mind.

It is a shame, there are so many wonderful things, but please action your words.

Room Tip: A friend stayed near the outside lights, these were apparently really bright. Then she was moved to...

The hotel needs a renovation but it is quiet and clean. The location in a hill facing the sea is great.

Rooms are old but the bed are ne and really clean.

Breakfast is really good

People at the hotel in general are nice.

Internet connection is free and fast

Room Tip: For a quiet room , no facing the sea ... for an amaizing view facing the sea
