“Such an attractive setting but a pretentious menu that was off-putting!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We go out with friends for lunch on a regular basis, exploring the Cotswolds and seeking out good restaurants on the way.

Unable to locate anything in Fairford that would meet our expectation, the postman recommended The Swan in Southrop just down the road.

We found the menus to be pretentious and over-priced but had already ordered our drinks by that time. However, sitting at a table in the sun on the Village Green provided a peaceful interlude, apart from the wasps, but the tables and benches were not really suitable for dining, let alone drinks, as the Village Green had a definite camber. It is rather odd that the pub uses the Village Green as its garden but then the only other outdoor seating is on the other side of the pub and not really desirable as the tables are close together and slap up against the road.

We weren't the only visitors who had intended to stop for lunch, before perusing the menu after having ordered drinks. We all left at the same time with the lame excuse that we had decided not to eat. We were ravenous but the lunch menu was a pretentious turn-off!

We can't rate the food but the owners seemed pleasant and welcoming and the interior of the pub was attractive.

Maybe, try a bit of pretention in the form of an evening meal one day? Who knows?

I'm always at the swan and whether I'm in the restaurant or at the bar, I always find myself having a tremendous night. Fantastic all round.

“Lovely restaurant, great atmosphere, food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

We went to the Cotswolds to get away from London for a weekend and were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. The restaurant is quaint, people were very friendly and the service was excellent. My husband and I both had excellent meals and they had a good wine list. The prices were very reasonable.

This pub had a wonderful country feel and i couldn't recommend it any more.

The food was excellent.

If you want somewhere to stay, Thyme @ Southrop (next door) is fabulous!

“Pretentious and over priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

I had always wanted to eat at the Swan and as we were going to be in the area on Sunday, we decided to book. It was disappointing. The food was average dressed up with a few ingredients which had unusual names. I would have loved a roast but strongly object to having to pay £16 for meat and potatoes and then having to pay an extra £3.50 for each vegetable as side orders!! I think the Swan relies on its reputation, location and staff who talk in a certain way to justify a very average experience. Unfortunately it has put me off and I wouldn't return :-(
