This museum is about skating, speedskating, and the Elfstedetocht. Speed skating is king in The Netherlands; the Elfstedetocht (eleven cities skating race) is the pinnacle of the sport. This museum celebrates both of these. It looks small on the outside but there is a lot there; there are several rooms with an incredible number of artifacts. A fascinating display explained Klapschaatse--the newest speed skating technology. There is a display case for each elfstedetocht winner, with artifacts and their personal stories. Artifacts range from historic skates to old ice sleds to one Elfstedetocht skater's frost-bitten toe. This museum has everything you could ever want to know about the history of skates, how they're made, and skating in the Netherlands, including the Elfstdetocht. Exhibits are in Dutch but most are easy to figure out. A real treat!
